    How To Use This Book

Over a two-year period, I read through the entire New International Version Bible along with all the footnotes. As I read through it, I found myself highlighting many of the application notes. By the time I got to the end, I wanted to summarize all these application notes with the supporting scriptures. That is what I have done in this book.

To keep this book relative short and unintimidating, some of the supporting scriptures are quite brief. In those cases, I recommend reading the surrounding passages in order to get a clearer view of the context in which it was written.

This book is split into three sections, each with a different purpose.

For those Exploring the idea of who God is, that section helps teach what God is about and what he wants for our lives.

For those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and savior, the Growing section helps you learn ways to grow in all areas of your faith. However, you will still grow by reading through the Exploring section first.

For those who have been Following Christ for some time, this section will challenge you on topics that are harder to deal with. However, you will still grow by reading through the Exploring and Growing sections as well.

No matter where you are in life, this book will have a section that will pertain to you, and will hopefully answer some of your questions, allowing you to grow spiritually.

    EXPLORING

For those Exploring the idea of God, this section helps teach what God is about, and what he wants for our lives.

    The Judge

This illustration portrays God’s justice in dealing with our sin, as well as his great love for us. Many people in our culture relate best to stories, and this one presents the truths they most need to hear concerning Jesus and his work as our substitute.

*Adapted from More Than A Carpenter by Josh McDowell ©1977, 114-115

A young woman was arrested for breaking the law. She knew she’d been caught red-handed and couldn’t deny her guilt. Shelater stood in front of a judge’s bench and admitted what she had done. The man wearing a robe was a kind man, but he was also a just judge, and he knew he couldn’t let her off the hook. She had broken the law. So he gave her the penalty prescribed by law, which meant the girl was required to pay a steep fine – one she couldn’t afford – or else end up in jail.

But then the man did an amazing thing. He stood up, took off his justice robe, walked around to the front of the bench where the girl was standing, pulled out his wallet, and lovingly looked in her eyes as he handed her the money she needed to pay her entire fine.

Why did he do this? Because the woman was his own daughter. Being a good judge, he had to honor the law and impose the penalty. But being a loving father, he was willing to come to her side to pay the price on her behalf.

But now the girl has a choice to make. Would she let go of her pride, and humbly reach out to receive her father’s generous offer? Or would she insist on trying to prove she didn’t need help from him or anyone else, and end up going to jail?

This story illustrates the situation between God and us. God is a holy and just judge who said, You’ve broken my laws and sinned against me, and the penalty is death (spiritual death e.g separation from God). But he is also like a loving father, who said, I love you and will come down and pay the penalty myself. Then he took off his heavenly robe, came to earth in the person of Christ, and paid for our sins by dying on the cross.

Now, we too, have a choice to make: to humbly accept his payment, forgiveness and leadership – or to reject his sacrifice and spend the rest of our lives, and eternities, trying to pay the debt we can never repay no matter how many good deeds we do.

    Blind Faith Need Not Apply

Christianity doesn’t say, Close your eyes and believe, but rather, Check it out for yourself. The Bible encourages you to investigate its claims thoroughly because your conclusion about Jesus is a life and death matter.

Luke 1:1-4 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, ²just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. ³Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, ⁴so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

The Gospel is Really About Love

Jesus says that if we truly love God and our neighbor, we will naturally keep the (ten) commandments. This is looking at God’s law positively. Rather than worrying about all we should not do, we should concentrate on all we can do to show our love for God and others.

Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' ³⁸This is the first and greatest commandment. ³⁹And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' ⁴⁰All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

    What, Me Worry?

Just as Jesus calmed the waves, he can calm whatever storms you may face.

Luke 18:23-25 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. ²⁴The disciples went and woke him, saying, Master, Master, we're going to drown!  He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. ²⁵Where is your faith? he asked his disciples.  In fear and amazement they asked one another, Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.

No Need To Fear, The Real Super Man Is Here!

When you fear what lies ahead, remember that God will stay with you through difficult times and that he has promised you great blessings.

Genesis 15:1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision:

Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.

    Uncle Sam’s Creator Wants YOU!

God often works in unexpected ways. When he chooses people to fulfill his plans, he always goes deeper than appearance, tradition or position. He sometimes surprises us by choosing the less obvious person, at least by human reasoning. God can use you to carry out his plans even if you don’t think you have all the qualifications.

Genesis 48:8-12 When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, Who are these? ⁹ They are the sons God has given me here, Joseph said to his father. Then Israel said, Bring them to me so I may bless them. ¹⁰ Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them. ¹¹ Israel said to Joseph, I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too. ¹² Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees and bowed down with his face to the ground. ¹³ And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them close to him. ¹⁴ But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

The Hope of the World is in His Hands

When you experience intense grief over the loss of a loved one, breakup of a marriage, loss of a job, or a rejection of a close friend, don’t abandon hope. Don’t turn away from the one person who can help you. Do what Jairus did. Don’t be afraid; just believe. Your hope is found in the resurrected Lord, the one with power over life and death.

Luke 18:50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.

    Mission Impossible? I Think Not.

Who could believe that Abraham would have a son at 100 years of age – and live to raise him to adulthood? But doing the impossible is everyday business for God. Our big problems won’t seem so impossible if we let God handle them.

Genesis 21:1-7 Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. ² Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. ³ Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. ⁴ When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. ⁵ Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.⁶ Sarah said, God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me. ⁷ And she added, Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.

What Does Mary Kay Really Look Like?

Rebekah had physical beauty, but the servant was looking for a sign of inner beauty. Appearance is important to us, and we spend time and money improving it. But how much time do we put into developing our inner beauty? Patience, kindness and joy are the beauty treatments that help us become truly lovely – on the inside.

Genesis 24:15,16 Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor. ¹⁶ The girl was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
