Tom sat back in the chair. The equipment around him reminded him of tentacles, reaching for him. The lights were all too bright, offsetting the grey skies outside of the clinic. That day, the uncomfortable chairs remained empty of humankind. People did their duty to society in the form of working.
He had a good job at the plant. They paid and fed him well. He had lots of free time. Tom had spent the greater part of the day reflecting on his life and this big decision. He may have been only three hundred, but he’d seen a lot.
And he couldn’t afford the expensive surgery to add memory holders, not that it bothered him too much.
Tom leaned back and let the memories come. He practiced for the doctor who would run through his soupy brain and delete those moments best forgotten.
He reached out and grabbed one of the lines.
Hey, sir, please don’t touch that,
the doctor said. His voice came out raspy, as if he had a cold. The dyed, black
