EPILOGUE
CHAPTER ONE
Please help me.
Help is on the way ma’am.
This was a bad time for everyone in Evapti City. Everybody was going crazy, and nobody could stop the craziness from happening. Everybody was killing each other for their things. Everybody was going to people’s houses and breaking into them with brutal force. They were stealing everything they could like there was no tomorrow. They were doing this because they were convinced that there was no tomorrow. A man named Lasel Greenburg was behind all of this. He was a brutal man who didn’t care who he hurt and didn’t care what had to be done. He did whatever it took to get what he wanted, even if it hurt people, even his parents. This man was forty-six years old. From childhood through college, he wanted to be a history teacher and that’s what he became. He loved being a teacher. He loved to work with kids, he loved helping them learn the passion about history and hoped that one day, people would join him in helping people, but something happened to him that changed everything. All of that goodness changed in him in one day, in one second. He changed like a rock becoming dirt. He went from being the cleanest rock in the world to being a filthy rock. The difference between a rock and Lasell is that a rock can be flipped over, can be exposed. Many people have tried to change him back to a good person but all of those that have tried have failed and have been compromised.
Where are you people? I’m dying over here.
They’re on the way ma’am. Please wait. Everybody is busy right now.
One of the paramedics came.
Are you alright, ma’am? I’m here to help, just sit tight.
Not really…
The paramedic helped the woman, who had gotten beat up for her stuff, to the ambulance. The ambulance soon left and headed straight to Evapti General.
Hey you?
Yeah?
Remember me from high school?
Not really…
Take a closer look.
She took a closer look and remembered the man.
I remember you now.
You do now, don’t you?
The man spoke through a grin.
I do. It’s been a long time.
It has been.
Today’s not a good today to be catching up with people. As you can see people are dying left to right and I need to help them.
The people that are dying…
What about them.
You’re about to be one of them.
What do you mean?
The man took out a gun and shot her and she lay on the floor, bleeding. Her blood was rushing out of her body and no one came to help her in time for her to be saved. The woman that saved other lives who just died was named Shirley Cobalt. Shirley was a mother, sister, and wife. She was the mother of a two-year old boy. Sixteen years, three months, and two days later was the eighteenth birthday of a boy named Bryan Cobalt. He was six foot two and his nationality was American. He was homeless and lived with his father. They lived in a homeless shelter together. The father was named Humer Cobalt. Humer hadn’t always been homeless. There had been a point in his life where he was successful and had a lot of money. All of that changed in one day. The day everyone remembers; the day of the Accident.
That day will always be remembered throughout Evapti City. People pray that something like that will never happen again. Lasel Greenburg was the cause of the Accident.
He made people believe that everyone was going to get minimum wage and all the prices were going to go up so high that they couldn’t afford it--the cause of people outraging and going crazy.
Bryan woke up. He was on a homeless shelter bed, sleeping next to his father.
Hey Dad, wake up.
Huh? What time is it?
Humer asked.
Time for you to get a watch.
Yeah… If only we could afford it.
Yeah… but don’t worry Dad. Someday we will.
Bryan got up from the bed and looked at his empty wallet, fallen out of his pocket. The wallet wasn’t a very good wallet. It had holes everywhere and it smelled. It smelled like trash because that’s where he got it from. While it was on the ground, a picture of Bryan’s mother, Shirley, peaked out. Bryan picked up his wallet and tucked the picture of his mother back into it.
You know Bryan, we may be homeless and not have anything but if your mother was still here today, she would be proud of you.
No, she wouldn’t.
Yes, she would. Don’t say that. I knew your mother and she would be proud of you.
Proud of what? We’re both homeless. We’re not going anywhere with our lives right now.
She’d be proud of you for being a good kid.
Yeah… Because being a good kid pays the bills…
You got no bills to pay…
Real funny…
I’m not joking… But seriously, your mom wants you to grow up a good kid whether you’re homeless or not.
I get it… I get it…
Do you know what it means to be a good kid?
Humer asked.
Yeah.
Tell me what it means.
It means to be a good person.
And what does it mean to be a good person?
Humer asked.
That could be anything. Being a good person means a lot of things.
What was the type of good person your mother wanted you to be? I’ve told you this many times.
I don’t remember. Can you remind me?
Bryan asked.
Of course, I can. Being a good person to her means to put yourself out of the way to help others. That’s what your mother did her entire life. Also, she wanted you to not steal or do drugs. That’s what it meant to be a good person to her.
I get it…
Do you now?
Humer asked.
Yeah, I do.
Good. I want you to be a good person, too.
Don’t all parents…?
Yeah but every parent has different hopes for their kids. Some parents want their kids to be athletes and some want them to be billionaires. There are plenty of parents with their own dreams, but our hopes are that you stay a good person.
Don’t worry about it. I’ll stay a good person.
You better.
The homeless shelter was serving breakfast.
Let’s get some food. You may be homeless but you need your energy for school.
What will you do?
Bryan asked.
Going to look for a job. Staying here all day isn’t going to get us anywhere in life.
He paused for a moment, then continued, I know I may not have been the father you’ve wanted but I’m going to change all of that.
How?
Bryan asked.
First, I’m going to get a job that pays the bills.
Then?
Bryan asked.
I’m going to buy you anything and everything you want.
You don’t have to do that. I can find a job and pay for my own things.
But I want to. I never bought you anything as a kid so I’m going to pay you back by buying you everything.
If you want.
Come on, let’s get some food now before it’s all gone.
Let’s go then.
Bryan and Humer both went to get some food. They waited in line like everyone else and eventually got food. They were lucky. Some people didn’t get food. They started eating and Bryan got ready for school.
You ready?
Humer asked.
No.
Humer chuckled.
You may not like it but there are some things in life that you have to do, and getting an education is one of them.
CHAPTER TWO
Bryan left the homeless shelter and walked to school. Everyone had a cell phone at his school except for him. Everybody had everything they ever wanted except for him. He was walking to school when he walked by a burning building. There were people inside the building and they were locked in and no one was around the burning building except for him. They were screaming for help through the windows and no one was around to hear it except for Bryan.
Help! Please help us!
Bryan looked at them and waved with one hand so they could see him.
Please help us!
a woman called.
Bryan looked around to see who she was talking to and it seems like she was talking to him. Bryan didn’t do anything. He just stood there and watched the burning. Smoke was coming outside of the building and all Bryan did was watch the building burn.
What are you doing?
she cried.
What are you doing?
Bryan asked.
Don’t just stand there. Help us!
I don’t like your attitude.
There was no response after that. Bryan couldn’t see the people over the smoke anymore.
Bryan left them where they were and went to school. As Bryan was walking away from the burning building, he didn’t even turn his head to look back.
Bryan had made it to school and saw everyone doing what they do. Bryan was a senior attending Evapti High School. This school was public, but it was big and rich off donations. This school was richer than most prep schools in the area which had reputations for being rich and snotty--most of the kids there were rich and snotty, so they were known for being rich and snotty, too. Everyone at his school had money and an attitude to go with it except for Bryan and a few others. They formed became friends and formed a group that wasn’t rich and snotty, and they hung out together. There were about ten people throughout the group at any time but Bryan only ever talked to 2 people in the group. One of them was a girl named Ashley Red and the other was a boy named Droni Low.
Bryan walked through the school and went to where he and his friends usually hang out: the library. Bryan walked into the library and sure enough, there they were. Bryan was the poorest out of the crew. Everyone else wasn’t poor or homeless. They just weren’t rich like everyone else. They all had working parents and they all lived in homes and they had money to spend but they didn’t like to spend money. They liked to conserve it. Bryan walked up to them.
Hey guys.
Hey.
Everyone was excited to see Bryan. Bryan may have been the poorest member in the group but everyone in the group loved him. Everything about Bryan was normal, especially that he had a secret that no one knew and he prayed every day that no one would find out. Bryan’s secret was that he was a thief. He was not a normal thief—he stole from everyone except his friends. He stole from people on the street and in school--whenever he had a chance to steal something, he went for it and got he wanted. He didn’t care what he stole or what it meant to someone else; if it had value and no one was looking, in a blink of an eye, it’s his. He only did it to survive in this world. Someone stole his mother from him when he was young, so he must steal to survive, to prevent that from happening to him again. Bryan acted ignorant after he stole, since people always find someone to blame.
What you guys up to?
Bryan asked.
Oh, nothing much… Just talking about prom and stuff like that.
Oh right, prom…
You’re going, right?
Ashley asked.
Are you guys?
Bryan asked.
Definitely. Speaking of prom, Droni just asked me to go with him.
Congratulations, I’m glad for you!
Bryan thought about it. Now he needed to steal more so he could afford to go to prom and he needed to think of a date. Nobody in the school knew that Bryan was poor; he had a reputation for being a cool kid. He’d just steal someone else’s girl and go to prom with her. He just needed to think of a girl that he would look good with and have fun with and he would take her. Bryan was confident that he could take any girl he wanted. Even though Bryan had no money, he was probably one of the handsomest kids in the entire school. Girls in the school dreamt of going on a date with Bryan, let alone going to prom with him. If Bryan asked any girl to prom, she probably wouldn’t say yes because she would be too busy passing out.
Who are you going to go with?
Ashley asked Bryan, who was busy daydreaming.
I’m not sure yet.
Whoever you ask, they’ll sure be one lucky lady.
You think?
Bryan asked.
I know.
Thanks.
Anytime.
So, who you going to ask?
Droni asked.
Like I just said… I don’t know who I’m going to ask.
Think of anyone bro, before they’re all taken.
I think I’ll be fine Droni, but thanks for worrying.
I only want what’s best for you,
Droni said, grinning.
Yeah but don’t worry. I’ll get a date for sure. I just don’t know when.
While Bryan was thinking of someone to take to prom, others were doing their prom-posals, and most of the girls were saying yes. Some said no, they don’t want to go, but they said it nicely so they didn’t hurt the guy’s feelings. Draki Lunar was asking Leah Chaplin to prom and she said yes. The way Draki asked her was pretty original and all
. There was nothing special with the way she got asked. Leah was at her locker getting her stuff for class and then Draki came along and did his thing.
Hey Leah.
Hey Draki.
How’s your day today?
Draki asked.
Good you?
Leah replied.
Good.
Draki gulped because he was so nervous about asking Leah to prom, but eventually he did it.
So… You know what prom is right?
Draki asked, barely keeping himself from stuttering.
Yeah… Why?
Leah asked.
Are you going with anyone yet?
Draki asked.
No one asked me yet but someone will hopefully.
Um… Leah?
Draki asked.
Yeah Draki?
Leah asked.
Would you like to go to prom with me?
Draki asked.
Wow… oh my God, this is so unexpected.
So…
Yes! I will go with you.
They hugged and Draki gave her flowers that were all different types of colors. After this, they both went to their classes and started texting each other when they got home. They were texting about what color dress she was going to wear and what color tie he should wear so they would look nice together. They both planned on wearing a light purple
