    Prologue

I stepped into my room after a really long day of school. I dropped myself on my bed and took out the music we wrote in after-school band. I laid lazily, looking at the sheets in front of me. I began to hum the tune. My tempo gradually build up and before I knew it, I was singing loud enough to frighten the pigeons hanging out on the electrical wires outside. It was a marvelous sound, and I wasn't ready to let it go.

This force was strong, like a bad case of lisztomania. Music was an entirely new thing in my second grade life, since my mom asked me to try something different. And honestly, I didn’t want something new to be a part of my life. But being who I am, I accepted music to be a part of me. A new risk, but I was ready for it.

    ***************

The door swung open. I froze. An outline of a figure began to form. I squinted, trying to figure this out. At the same time, I felt as though I should run far far away, although I couldn’t. Sam?

Hazel walked in and looked as though she was appalled. Hi, Hazel, I waved with a nervous chuckle. Flashy clothing and deafening music isn’t the best way to greet a friend. I gave up. She had to know someday. Look, I began, I’m trying to drown my worry in music. You must be freaked out. Sorry, I admitted.

After what seemed like forever, she finally replied, Who else would I expect something like this from? she joked, What’s up? What are you worrying about? she interrogated, in a soft, empathetic tone.

I’m scared Hazel, I admitted, I don’t think I can hide this anymore. I can’t go and perform on a stage with people I don’t even know! Mr. Chatrye put together a band for me to play with in the Big Band Bash, but… I can’t. It’s like the confession is building up. It hurts. I can’t keep up anymore. No one knows about me and my secret. They all think that I’m some future doctor, even my parents,—help me, I begged.

Don’t worry Sam. Just calm down. I think we’ll be able to sort this all out. Being the smartest kid in school, everyone expects you to become a doctor or something when you grow up. But, you want to express yourself—through music. Yet, everyone expects you to have a different occupation. So you’re locked; you’re hopeless, idealess. And that doesn’t happen very often! Trust me, we can do something about it, she cheered, although I could sense the doubt in her words.

No. I’m sorry Hazel. But I can’t take this any more. One whole year of being a completely different person that isn’t the true me is definitely not something I should be proud of. I have to confess. This rock star act isn’t helping out in anyway. I’ll talk to Mr. Chatrye tomorrow during after-school band, I said, worried.

That’s up to you. But, I don’t see you as that kind of girl. You are not someone who gives up so easy. Think about it, we'll talk later, she assured, closing the door behind her.

    Chapter 1: #Goals…

I slammed my skinny locker shut and began to walk towards the music room. I waved at a few acquaintances and kept walking, observing the vast halls of Hamilton High School. The weather wasn’t helping my mood at all. It was blazing hot here
