    Preface

Lucille had felt since her early 20’s that she would like to settle  down to a life of polyandry and that it was something she probably needed and might achieve, then one year, quite unexpectedly, in a matter of hours, her wish started to come true.

    Chapter One

At the age of thirty, Lucille was standing on her own two feet. Having focused on her job, without the complications it could have attracted, her goal had shaped and fruit was starting to show up.

It was earlier than usual today she was coming home, with car keys between her fingers, a couple of files and a smile on her face. She was a beautiful woman. Not a doll type, not perfect, but she stood out in almost magical ways.

The heavy building door slowly went back behind her, in a pace unknowing of her own, that was fast and joyful.

Hello Miss Lucille, a man’s voice went.

Hello Ben, Lucille replied. Then she proceeded to getting her door keys in, and looked at Ben again, and smiled. The type of smile she made clear she had taken seconds of her time, to devote to the other person, no matter the hurry, and her day.

    That made her liked.

Ben Still was a teacher, about a decade older than her, and he was her floor neighbour. He had average looks and a kinder soul than average.

She went in and threw her files on the hall table as the phone was ringing

    Hello?

The door did not close well behind her, so Ben overheard bits, enough to understand she was talking to furniture movers. Lucille felt compelled to explain.

I found a new place. I will be moving very soon.

    Without asking me?

Ben had a coy face. A year ago he wouldn’t have dared such a move. A year ago, his wife was dying. And several years ago, no other women existed for him.

Yes, maybe I should have. Then Lucille saw his coffee cup was getting empty.

Won’t you come in? I’ll give you a fresh refill and tell you the whole story.

Pushing away a few magazines, she made room for the coffee on the table. Ben was standing. He was looking at the paintings on the wall. One depicted a table with the richness of fruit, wine and game. The other painting had less sharp colours. It was a cottage surrounded by flowers. Ben sat down and looked interested upon the pages of a catalogue.

    For the new place?

Yes. So are these, photos of the house. Ben studied the pictures handed to him. I will have a garden, she said.

Yes, I can see. Beautiful roses. Plan to keep them, right?

    Naturally.

Seems you have found a great deal.

Ben, I have to take something there. Would you like to come with me?

He liked the degree of trust his neighbour was showing him. Although in the process of getting painted, the house was as impressive as it looked in the photographs. Ben waited at the door while Lucille was talking to the workers. Lucille felt compelled to show him the garden before leaving. It was not yet in bloom.

A week later, after it became a routine and she had someone to count on with the furniture inventory, if she was not there when the movers came, which Ben watched until they disappeared with the last box, all that was left was the bed and a desk that were to be moved the following day. She had not taken one day off for the move, and they were needed for one last night there.

So, that’s it. Ben put his hands on his hips.

Yes, that’s all that is left.

Well you won’t be needing chairs now. You’ll be gone.

The sunlight was dancing freely in the empty room, no longer restricted by curtains.

Yes, a bed is all I need now...

Well I will be going and let you rest.

    No, stay.

It is a bit late in the day for coffee, but why don’t we have some at my place, his eyes had hope.

Depends on what the night is going to be like. It is Saturday tomorrow. Ben did not say anything. He was waiting. "Why don’t you bring the coffee here? I will... I will have some
