About this ebook

Annabelle “Annie” Alley was turning into a beautiful, younger version of her mother, Kaitlin. All of the Alley women looked alike. Both Annie and Kaitlin were well-known authors, and Annie’s famous FBI series had the critics singing her praises. Not many realized that her books were an honest portrayal of her baby sister’s life.

Annie finds herself in New York in the middle of winter for an awards dinner and a book signing. She is homesick, and misses her husband and children. She’s counting the days until the twins’ Spring Break when they would fly to Belize to spend time with her family. Warm tropical breezes sounded like heaven — especially in the freezing, pelting rain on the cold and lonely street heading to Barnes and Noble. No wonder her Mama refused to come back to New York in the winter.

As she walked, she had the creepy feeling that someone was following her. She heard the echo of footsteps and every so often, she saw a huge shadow behind her. On the way back to the motel, she let her fear prod her into running. Suddenly, from behind her, a large hand covered with a sickly sweet dampness closed over her face. She realized that she hadn’t been paranoid after all. Her mother’s abduction was repeating itself. Her last thoughts were of her husband and her babies...

Victoria Van Haven, an old enemy of Kaitlin’s, convinced her younger son to hold the Alley woman for ransom to save the family’s empire. In reality, Victoria just wanted Katie dead. She wanted her to pay for her older son’s death. What she didn’t know was that her son would abduct the wrong Alley!

Shelly, a surgeon and former FBI agent, her husband, Michelle, and their old unit are called back to action to go after Annie in Madrid. Fighting impossible odds, they manage to save Annie and bring her back home.

Van Haven remains determined to exact her revenge, and continues harass the family — taking both Annie and her mother hostage with the aid of her criminal connections. None of them could have guessed at the terror Annie’s sister, Shell, and the rest of her family would rain down on them.

    Annie - CJ Day

    Prologue

The night was freezing with the rain blasting in sheets as Annie bent her head and hurried forward. Her trench coat was drenched, her umbrella had turned inside out and flew away and she was chilled to the core of her being. New York. Snow would have been better than this. Annie thought about her Mama and sister in Belize and growled. What am I doing here?

Annie had come to New York City two days ago and still had two more signings for her new book. Her agent had insisted this was necessary. The writers’ awards were given out last night and Lizzie had been in her element. Annie had been elected to pick up her Mama’s and her own awards since Katlin swore that she wouldn’t come to New York in the winter again — even if they were handing out gold bricks. Annie smiled at the thought. Her Mama was a great novelist and no one messed with her. Even from Belize and her retirement, the publishers and agents kept calling. That’s how it went after you were rich and famous … like Annie would ever get to that point.

Annie hesitated and looked around. Time and again she felt like someone was behind her. Lord, I’m getting paranoid. She laughed out loud. She wasn’t use to going places alone in the big city although she had gone on several book signings. Annie looked around and someone ducked into an alley just behind her. She shook her head. There were back entrances to businesses, some clubs, and even loft apartments that were accessed from the alleys. She was imagining things.

Annie stepped into the foyer of Barnes and Noble and pulled off her drenched coat and rain scarf. She felt like shaking like a wet dog but there were already several people in line to get their books signed. She sighed and handed Marco her coat and grabbed the towel that he handed her and her briefcase to run to the ladies room to freshen up.

Too late, Lizzie spotted her and came running. There you are!

Lizzie, I need a few minutes. Since when do y’all get monsoons in New York? Annie growled and stomped into the bathroom. She pulled her makeup kit out of her oversized briefcase and tried to repair the damage.

Oooh … someone’s not in a good mood! Lizzie held up her hands in surrender. You know, I didn’t order the weather just to piss you off, Annie.

Annie turned and had to laugh at the smirk on Lizzie’s face. No … but you made me come to this god forsaken place in the middle of winter! She laughed as Lizzie rolled her eyes. Not everyone considers their agent one of their best friends but Lizzie had been a friend since college and they both had a lot in common. Katie always spent time with Marco and Lizzie as well when she came to the city. They were a fun couple to hang around with.

Sorry Annie. I forgot Georgia peaches can get soggy in too much rain … maybe I can order up some of that Atlanta sunshine to make you feel better. She laughed. Hey, at least you don’t have this to deal with. Lizzie ruffled the wild curls that were a burnished red and were starting to frizz. She was a beautiful lady and a fantastic agent with a great sense of humor. How could you stay mad at her?

I thought the signing didn’t start for another hour, Lizzie, Annie griped as she attempted to get herself together.

Can I help it that you have written such a great book? Lizzie countered.

You do have a point. Annie smirked and they both laughed. ‘Mighty Doc’ had been hotter than any of them could have dreamed. Writing about her sister, Michelle Brooke and her many FBI excursions and confrontations had people drooling for the next edition. No one knew that most of the books were based on fact, not fantasy. Shelly was always in trouble … well, at least until lately. Now, she was in Belize with her medical team and her family living the dream. Okay, let’s do this.

Annie hurried to the long table with a smile on her face. She would be flying home tomorrow and when her husband, Andrew, finished on Friday they were flying to Belize for the week of summer break for her twins; Corey and Carey. Little AJ (their soon to be two year old son) was so excited to get to go play in the sand with Shelly’s children that they could barely get him to sleep at night. It was time that they got away for awhile and they hadn’t seen her family for months.

Annie, Lizzie leaned over and whispered, wasn’t that guy at your last book signing in L.A.? Annie looked at her agent for a second and then in the direction where the man was standing. She recognized him. Odd, maybe she wasn’t imagining someone following her.

I think you’re right. He was also at the one in D.C. Annie frowned and then shook her head. They were being paranoid. Why would this guy be following her … a mother of three? Yeah right! But naturally, Annie’s memory flew back over the years to when her mother had a stalker and the nightmare that almost took her away from them. Lizzie, make sure Marco keeps an eye on that guy … it’s probably nothing.

    * * * * *

The signing went on for hours. The rain had finally stopped and it was dark outside. Well, I guess that’s it! Lizzie and Marco plopped down on the seats next to Annie. All in all, we did fantastic. Two hundred books sold and several that they brought with them were signed as well. She was beaming at her fiancé. Annie, you’re keeping up with Katlin’s sales at this point. You make me proud! Katie had made Lizzie a famous agent, but Annie sure kept her in the center of the awards. They were not her only clients — not by a long shot — but they were the most famous.

I honestly didn’t think that everyone would like this one. I think they like it even better than the last one, Annie admitted. I don’t know what I would do if Tina wasn’t already around for the kids … now I know how Mama felt when we were growing up. She sighed and picked up her briefcase. I’m going back to the hotel to soak in a tub. She was exhausted and homesick. She missed her family.

Before or after you call home? Lizzie asked and grinned.

After. I miss the family, Lizzie, Annie said and smiled back at her.

You sure you don’t want to go out to dinner with us? Lizzie asked as she stood up and stretched. You’ve got to be getting hungry, Annie.

I’ll get something at the hotel. I’m beat, Annie admitted. Marco helped her into her coat and they all headed out. Annie was tired and she just needed some time alone. Two more days of New York didn’t sound like much to look forward to when you saw white sand beaches every time you closed your eyes. Lord, I need a vacation!

Let me get you a cab, Annie, Marco said as he stepped out. The night was cool but the stars had come out and a brilliant moon lit up the outline of the huge skyscrapers. Still, New York wasn’t the safest place for a beautiful lady to walk alone.

No. That’s okay. The hotel isn’t that far away and I think I might enjoy the walk. The trip here wasn’t much fun but the walk back … yeah … I’m walking. See you guys tomorrow! Annie waved and headed out. Her cell phone rang and she looked at the readout, smiling. Hey honey! There he was, the love of her life.

Andy was smiling at the sound of her voice. How did it go?

Not bad. We sold two hundred copies and I signed books until I thought my hand would drop off. How’s it going there? It was good to hear his voice.

Well, let’s see … Andy leaned back at his desk and smiled at the girls as they walked in with their little brother all cleaned up and ready for a bedtime story. We miss you, we love you, we’re bored without you …

You can’t be bored with those three! Annie said, and laughed.

Well, I guess that part is true. Let me put the kids on and then we’ll talk. Andy handed the phone to AJ while Annie listened to the chatter of the children. This was what she needed. She was just homesick. Her twins had just turned 10, and were growing up way too fast. She could picture them in her mind and felt a squeeze on her heart. They had been blessed with beautiful children and she knew how very lucky that she was. Andrew was the perfect husband and father.

When Andy got on the phone again, Annie had to wipe the tears away. Hey honey, it’s almost over, he said gently. I bet you’re exhausted, aren’t you?

Yeah … She sighed. And I’m homesick. Annie slowed her step. I can’t wait for this vacation, Andy. We need a break.

You’re right about that one. The office has been a madhouse and keeping up with the kid’s schedule … thank God for Tina … Andy leaned back. I love you, Annie, hurry home.

That’s the plan. I’ll talk to you in the morning. Annie shut her cell phone and picked up her pace. There was a shadow behind her and she could see it reflected in the windows of the building across the street. She was being silly. There are millions of people in New York. Of course, there was someone walking behind her. I am such an idiot! She chided herself and tried to relax. She had felt weird all night. Every time she looked up, that man was staring at her. There was something vaguely familiar about him. No, she didn’t know him, but he looked like someone … someone from the past. She should have taken the cab … Annie walked faster. She saw the hotel ahead. Not knowing why, she suddenly felt panicked. She broke into a run …

It was too late, a hand covered her mouth before she could scream and she was dragged into an alley between a used bookstore and a pharmacy. She fought and struggled, but the mugger was taller and stronger. She felt a needle prick on her neck, and then her head felt funny. Things began to move in slow motion and she couldn’t seem to control her arms and legs. Someone grabbed her and lifted her up. He was strong. She could feel the outline of his hard muscular body against her own.

I have her, Mom. Pick us up now! the man’s deep baritone whispered. He must have been talking into a cell phone. Why couldn’t she open her eyes? What was happening? Oh. My. God! It’s happening again! NO!

Who … are … you? Annie moaned as she faded in and out. She fought hard to stay awake.

Who do you think I am, Katie? the guy whispered.

    I … don’t … know … My name … is … Annie … She tried again to fight free.

Nice try, he said and laughed. You may be using an alias, Katlin Alley, but I know who the hell you are and you will pay for what you have done. Your whole damn family will pay. I promise you that.

What? Annie had no idea what this man was talking about. "I am not Katlin Alley," Annie whispered. Why did this guy want her mother? She wasn’t going to tell him that Katie was her Mama …but why would he be looking for her? Jonathan Van Haven was dead. Annie was the one who put the final bullet in him when he was trying to kill Shelly.

Who are you? Annie asked as she fought and struggled to get away. If she could just get free and try to run! Man, her brain was fuzzy! This man sounds like Van Haven. It couldn’t be! She struggled to look at his face. No, he looked … related … but he wasn’t Van Haven. That man had been dead for years.

I can’t believe you’re still awake! The guy groaned and doubled as she kicked him in the groin. Annie slammed the heel of her pump as hard as she could into his privates as she struggled to get away. Bitch …!

Annie kicked and squirmed. She threw a punch to his jaw and an elbow in his gut. Her skirt was constricting and she was having trouble keeping her balance. If her head would just clear, she could run away. She was staggering and it took all she had to dodge his grab for her.

The man slammed his fist into her jaw and Annie flew against the brick wall and slid down. He stumbled over to pick her up. He got in her face and yelled with spit coming out of his livid face; WHO AM I? YOU ASK …WHO AM I? I AM YOUR WORST FREAKIN’ NIGHTMARE! Annie faded into darkness and he dragged her into his arms and carried her to the waiting car. Just drive the car, damn it! He said as he slammed the door. His mother looked over at him frowning.

Are you okay Jeremy? she asked softly.

No, I’m not okay, he growled. The bitch broke my balls. He glared at his mother as she laughed at him. This is nuts. You know that, right?

No, it isn’t. Jonathan left that woman everything he had. It should have been yours, Jeremy. They got everything and you have nothing. That was wrong. She leaned over and patted his hand and continued driving away from the city …

    CHAPTER ONE

Andrew got the kids off to school and loaded AJ up to take to Montessori classes. He had no idea how Annie kept this schedule. It was crazy. He was going to be late … again. He pulled out his phone while they were stopped in traffic to try to call Annie. Huh! It went right to voice mail. Hey babe, I’m stuck in traffic with AJ and thought I would call. Man, you sure are up and out early this morning … give me a call when you get this message … He hung up as the traffic finally moved forward.

Andy pulled up in front of the school to find Linda waiting for his son. Come on, buddy. We’re late. He flipped open the restraints and lifted AJ from his Escalade’s back seat. Hey Linda, sorry we’re late. I have no idea how Annie does this …

Shoot! Linda laughed. Annie would have been up and written a chapter, swam twenty laps, jogged around the neighborhood and had breakfast finished, laundry in and the kids at class already. Don’t worry about it, Andy; I just staggered in with my first cup of coffee. No one can keep up with the Alley women, you know that!

Yeah, you have a point. Thank God, she’ll be back soon. Andy laughed and kissed his son. Have a good day at school buddy.

AJ grinned at his Daddy and held out his hand to his teacher Linda Jones. Love you Daddy! Have fun at work!

He may look like you Andy but he has Annie’s energy in the morning. Linda laughed as she lifted the boy up in her arms.

Andy shook his head and agreed. He grabbed his phone again and tried Annie. It still went to voice mail. Babe, are you okay? It’s only eight o’clock. Well, don’t work too hard … or are you shopping this morning? Well … give me a call … He closed his phone and climbed back into the car. This wasn’t like Annie. He wondered what was happening as he hurried into the office.

    * * * * *

Lizzie hung up the phone and looked over the table at Marco. They had left early to finish the television interview details for Annie and grab breakfast. It was already ten o’clock and Annie wasn’t answering her phone. Liz had hoped that Annie would join them. She knew that she was lonely without her family or her Mama with her. You know, this isn’t like Annie. Why don’t we go over to her hotel? Maybe she turned off her phone to get some writing in this morning … Liz stared out the window and worried.

Marco hurried to leave a tip and pay the bill. Come on. He sighed as he looked at his beautiful soon-to-be wife. Lizzie had fretted all morning when she couldn’t reach her friend. He knew they were close but this was kind of ridiculous. We’ll go check it out.

They took a cab to the Hilton and Lizzie ran to the desk. Have you seen Mrs. James this morning in room 412? She asked the young girl behind the desk.

Um … No ma’am, I haven’t. Did you try to call her room? She asked.

Yes. I’ve tried several times to get her on her cell phone and on the room phone. She isn’t picking up. Lizzie stared at the girl. I need to see her room please.

The girl looked at the beautiful auburn haired woman and shook her head. I cannot do that, ma’am. She may be sleeping in and …

I am her literary agent and Annie has several appointments this morning. I need to talk to my client! Lizzie’s green eyes glared at the girl and the poor kid about swallowed her gum. Marco felt sorry for her.

He stepped forward and held out his hand with his card. Marco was one of the most famous photographers in New York and the girl recognized him immediately. Oh … it’s you! She whispered and he smiled at her.

Lizzie rolled her eyes and glared at him. Cut it out! Listen, we need to see your manager. I don’t have time for this!

Liz, calm down darling. Marco tried to placate his angry redhead with a smile. Please … Sherry … He read her name tag on her blazer. It’s very important that we speak to Annie. Could you arrange that for us? He flashed a brilliant smile and Lizzie groaned. He was too damn handsome for his own good.

Sherry picked up the phone and tried the room again. No answer. She turned to pick up the management’s pass card and asked one of the people in the back to cover her station. Come with me and we will check Mrs. James’ room. She hurried across the lobby to the elevators with Lizzie right on her heels. Marco followed with an amused look on his face, hoping that Lizzie wouldn’t bite the poor kid’s head off.

When they reached the fourth floor, Sherry hurried to the door of Annie’s room and knocked. Mrs. James, are you in there? Your agent and Marco are here to speak to you … Mrs. James? She turned and looked at Lizzie and shook her head. She passed the card through the receiver and opened the door and Liz passed by her in a flash.

Annie, where are you? Lizzie yelled out and quickly walked through the room. Oh my God, Marco, Annie didn’t come here last night!

Marco hurried and checked the closet and the rack for Annie’s coat and Liz was right, Annie didn’t make it home. Her briefcase was not in the room either. Could you check with housekeeping and see if anyone has been in the room?

Sherry hurried to the phone and within minutes the maid was at the door. Sherry hurried and talked to her and then came back shaking her head. She called the building’s security and immediately, the head of security was walking through the door. He crossed the room and held out his hand to Marco. I am Bart Allen, head of security. If you will follow me, we will check the video tapes and see if Mrs. James returned from her book signing last night. The couple fell into step with him as he turned at the elevator to talk to the clerk. Please notify us if Annie returns. You can return to your station now. Sherry nodded and headed to the stairs after placing a note on Annie’s door to not allow anyone else to enter the room. Whenever Bart took someone to the surveillance room, the client’s room was automatically considered a crime scene until they were notified otherwise.

Liz and Marco followed the tall man to security. He opened the door and walked to the cameras. When he turned around, he addressed Liz. Annie was your client and your best friend, correct? He had seen the lady visit Annie and leave with her on several occasions.

That’s correct. You know Annie? Liz asked.

Yes I do. Katie always stays here when she is in New York and Tom and Katie are friends of mine … so of course, I always look out for their daughters when they are in town. He smiled at Liz. The Alley women are well known around here and my wife was at the book signing last night. I could have had Annie sign Ella’s book but she just has to visit them whenever there are in town and she always goes to the book signings or art galleries whenever they have a showing. He turned back to the man at the desk. I need to bring up the tapes from last night.

The man hurried to comply and then looked at him. What times do you need?

Liz walked over to watch and Marco followed. Annie had to have left Barnes and Noble around nine o’clock …

Let’s start from when Annie left … no … run the tapes from the lobby and start at five o’clock, Bart told him quickly. Let’s see if anyone else was watching for Annie. Bart pulled out chairs for Annie’s friends. I’m always looking out for the ladies when they are in town. Tom’s a little over protective since the stalker that followed Katie around … He watched the tape and had the man at the desk to put the feed up on the large monitor for all of them to watch. Within minutes, Liz was on her feet and staring at the monitor.

There! Can you stop that? She cried. That man … we saw him at other signings. I showed that guy to Annie last night. He was at the signing last night at Barnes and Noble. Annie said that she had seen him in D.C. also and he was at the one in L.A …

Bart hurried to zoom in on the man’s face and quickly starting running a scan to try to find out who he was. Okay … continue, he told the guy that was running the tape. They watched as Annie came down from her room and entered the lobby and he followed her and scanned the room again. He’s not in the lobby now. He observed as Annie went to the desk and then exited the building. She stopped long enough to open up her umbrella outside of the door and they watched as she looked both ways and then left the entrance. Annie walked to the signing … in that? Bart asked.

Yes, Liz moaned. She should have taken a taxi but you know those guys…they walk everywhere …

    Annie walked home? Bart asked.

Yes, Marco answered as he stared at the photo on the wall. I offered to call a cab for her and Annie insisted on walking home. Of course, it had cleared and it would have been a quick walk back to the hotel. She left … around nine o’clock and we went to dinner. We asked her to come with us but she wanted to call home and soak in the tub … it was nine, wasn’t it Liz? He turned to look at her and Liz’ face went pale. He hurried to pull her close. Please don’t tell us that she had a stalker! Damn it, I should have walked back with her, he groaned. We need to call Andy.

Bart held up his hand as the scan stopped. Jeremy Valdez … does that name sound familiar? He is a businessman from Miami and he has connections with a firm in New York City. It is … oh hell … He hurried to the phone and called the police. When he left the phone, he motioned for the couple to follow him into his office. I will need a copy of this tape and the information on Valdez sent to my office immediately, he told the guy at the monitor.

Yes, sir, The young man answered and quickly got to work.

Bart closed to door to his office and leaned his head against the door. This could not be happening again.

Liz stood behind him shaking. Who is Jeremy Valdez?

Bart turned and looked at Annie’s beautiful friend and motioned for them to take a seat while he went to collapse in his own. He hurried to pick up the phone as he held up his finger to hold Liz at bay for a second. I need to talk to Matthew Colburn. Yes, this is important. It’s concerning Michelle Brooke’s sister. Yes, I will hold. He looked at Liz and sighed. Jeremy Valdez is Jonathan Van Haven’s younger half brother. He watched as Marco pulled Liz into his arms and sat down with her. The poor woman dissolved into tears immediately. None of them had quite got over what Van Haven had done to Katie several years ago and none of them knew that he had a younger half brother.

Marco stared at Bart. We have to call the family.

Bart nodded at the photographer and Matthew picked up the phone. He turned his attention to the call. Sir, I think Annie has been kidnapped. He explained who he was and where he was calling from and what was happening. Yes Sir, Annie’s agent and her fiancé are in my office right now. They brought the matter to my attention. We checked the surveillance tapes from last night … yes Sir … no one has heard from Annie since nine o’clock last night. He listened to Matt fume a barrage of cuss words on the line and had to smile. He knew about Matthew’s relationship with the Brooke and Alley families and how much he cared about Shell and her sister. That’s why I called you immediately, Chief. The Police are on their way, I called them first. No, I have not contacted the family yet. Yes, sir. He hung up the phone and faced Annie’s best friend. I called Chief Colburn in the Atlanta office and he is setting everything in motion from there. We will not waste time on this. Do you want to call Andy?

Liz stared at the man through her tears and nodded. I will call him at work. She reached into her briefcase to pull out her cell phone. Will you call Katie?

Bart smiled at her. Of course, Matthew is flying out immediately with his team and we will get them headed this way from Belize. I figured if we initiated all of the Brooke friends in the FBI immediately before the police got here, we would get things rolling a lot faster. He hesitated for a moment and then looked at Marco. You guys live in the city? Marco nodded. Give me your address and we will base things from your apartment … that sound like a plan?

Yes. That sounds good. Marco handed him his card and Bart raised an eyebrow. Yes, we have the penthouse and my studio is the floor below it. It makes it convenient to work from there and Liz works from the penthouse. Bart nodded. Come on Liz, you can call Andy on the way home.

    * * * * *

After they left Bart sat back and looked at the man’s face. You are a dead man walking, he told the photo. You have no idea what Shell is going to do to find you. You better not harm a hair on her head.

Sir …? Bart’s secretary stepped into the office and stared at his grim face. He looked up with a scowl on his face. Sorry, but the police are here.

Give me a moment. I have to call Tom, Bart said and she nodded and pulled the door close. Bart quickly picked up the phone to call Destiny Caye.

Destiny Caye, how may I direct your call? A sweet island voice answered.

I need to talk to Tom Alley, please, Bart answered with dread in his voice.

Is he expecting your call, Sir?

No. Tell him it is Bart from the Hilton Hotel in New York City. He sat back and waited to be put through. Telling his old friend that his daughter was missing was going to be painful. This was not something that he wanted to do but he owed it to them. They weren’t just clients of the hotel, they were friends.

Bart! What’s happening in New York? Tom answered.

Tom … I wish I was calling under better circumstances … Bart stared at the image on the monitor and sighed as he began to tell his friend that his worst nightmare had just happened all over again…

    * * * * *

Liz ran into the elevator after talking to Andy. She had never had to make a call like that. Andy left his office as she talked to him, headed for the airport. It was a good thing that he and Marco were practically the same size because she knew that he wouldn’t stop at home to pack a suitcase. Liz was crying. She couldn’t help it. She remembered the nightmare that Annie told her about. Katie had been taken by this man’s older half brother years ago. She had been beaten, drugged and raped … brutalized by an obsessed admirer. Shell about died trying to get her mother back.

Marco finally had caught up with her just before the door shut to the elevator. He pulled her against his chest. We’ll find her, Liz, he told her softly.

Why didn’t we insist on taking her back to her hotel, Marco? What kind of friend am I? She sobbed.

You are a good friend, honey. She wanted some space and you gave it to her. No one knew that this would happen, he said gently, knowing that it wouldn’t help but trying to calm her anyway. She was a beautiful, emotional redhead and whose moods were outrageous and who loved without limits.

I knew there was something wrong with that guy! Why didn’t I have you go beat him up? She was raging and she knew it. Oh Annie … Liz plopped down in the sofa after they entered the apartment and Marco went to fix her a drink. She needed to calm down. They had some cancellations to do quickly and she was in no shape to do them.

Do you want me to call your assistant or do you want me to make the necessary calls, honey? He watched as she focused and calmed herself. He admired this woman more than anyone he knew. Not many agents cared this much about their clients and Annie was different. She was fiancé’s best friend as well as one of her best clients.

I’ve got it … She sighed and went to the counter with her appointment book and day planner. She gladly took the martini and looked at him. Thanks for being here … He kissed her cheek and went to fix a snack. He would order things up and cancel his own appointments for the day. They were already a team and they would do this together. Somehow, he would help the love of his life through this and they would find Annie and get her back. He thought about her sister and flinched. That ole’ boy better hold on to his balls because if Annie didn’t take him down, her sister would.

Liz studied his face for a second and then asked; What are you thinking?

Shell’s going to kill that bastard. You know that, don’t you? He sighed.

Not before she cuts his balls off! Liz stormed.

Amazing … you do know what I was thinking! He laughed and then sobered up. This is going to be tough, Liz. I’m going in to cancel my appointments for today and then we’ll see what’s next. Are you okay? She nodded and picked up her own phone and went to the table to start to make her own cancellations … and Annie’s …

Tom and Katie waited outside of the operating room. It took awhile for Katie to get control and then Tom hurried to get Mike and Josh. They already had the kids with them. They had packed everything the family would need and they were waiting for Michelle and Bobbie to come out of surgery. They had their second victim of a boating accident (a two-year-old boy) in there trying to reattach his left leg that had been amputated by the boat’s prop. Shell had finished the vascular surgery on the six-year-old boy’s arm simultaneously with this surgery but this surgery was very intricate. Dr. Brooke was the area’s only vascular surgeon.

Mike hurried down the hall with Josh on one side and Legacy, his Doberman, on the other. They had just secured doctors to cover Shelly and Bobbie’s schedule. The good thing was that they were almost to the weekend … the bad thing was that Annie had been missing for fourteen hours already. The FBI unit was already in place and they were trying to trace and find Valdez. Katie and Tom had been notified three hours ago and it had taken them this long to get things moving. No one wanted to disturb Shell in the middle of this complicated surgery, so they got everything ready. Matt had a Lear jet waiting on them in Key West. They had a plane ready in Belize City to switch to as soon as they got there with the float plane.

Mike stopped in front of Katie who was absently petting Shell’s Doberman, Baby. She was pale, her eyes were bloodshot and her hands were trembling. Tom didn’t look much better. Caleb, Cartrina and Catlin saw him and ran toward them. Josh veered off to go to the nursery to pick up his son.

Daddy …! Little Catlin jumped into Mike’s arms and he scooped her up and knelt down to talk to his twins. Mama is still in surgery, their baby told them. It was hard to believe that she was two years old and his twins were five already.

Are you guys taking care of Nana and Papa? He asked the children gently. They knew that someone had taken their aunt and they were anxious to go help with Corey, Carey and AJ. Caleb looked angry, Trina looked sad and Cat looked confused. That’s a lot of emotions to deal with. They loved their aunts and had been looking forward to a long visit over the girls’ Spring Break.

They are really upset, Daddy, Caleb told him angrily. Mama doesn’t even know yet.

I know buddy, that’s why I’m here. When she knows that the little boy will be okay, we’ll head back to Georgia, okay? He’d love to tell them that it’s going to be okay but he wouldn’t lie to them. Victoria Van Haven was a bitter woman and none of them knew that Jonathan had a younger brother. Victoria had tried to sue for Jonathan’s money and failed. Evidently she had gone through the money that she had inherited and was blaming his family for the rest … but why Annie? He hadn’t figured it out yet … but they would. Matt already had their badges and equipment with him. Shell was not going to be happy. The past year here in the islands had been heaven. He never thought that they could walk away and move here but they had. He loved helping with the business and the dives were a blast. He loved coming home to his family every night and he had enjoyed feeling like his family was safe. Ignorance was bliss …

Tom, why don’t you and Katie take the children down to the cafeteria? Josh and I will wait on the girls. In fact, why don’t y’all go on down to the marina and wait on us. You could feed them lunch and get out of here for a while. We’ll join you as soon as the boy is in recovery and Shell and Bobbie are covered here. Mike knew that Katie would be better outside and so would Tom. The kids could run off some of their excitement and worry on the beach and sleep for the flight home.

I… that is really the cowardly way out … I should tell Shelly … Katie’s eyes were full of tears. She was blaming herself. Mike handed little Catlin to Caleb and sat down beside his mother-in-law. He put his arm around her and pulled her close.

This is not your fault, Mom. My parents are already in Atlanta, they’ll help with the children and we will get Annie back. These people are crazy and you know it. I can handle Shell … your other grandchildren are going to need you two and you need to walk and try to get it together. Let us tell Shell and Bobbie. I’ll give you a call as soon as we are headed to the marina, okay? Mike kissed the top of her head and hugged her tight. We will get through this.

Katie slowly stood up and pulled Catlin into her arms. Josh just showed up with Joshua and Tom grabbed the little boys. We’ll feed the children and as soon as you call, we’ll order you guys something to eat on the plane. She looked like a broken soul walking down the hall with both of the Dobermans on either side of them. The dogs loved the family and protected the children to the limit.

Mike hurried to the desk. Janice, how much longer do you think Shell’s going to be in surgery? He asked the lady. He wasn’t looking forward to telling Shelly the news anymore than Katie had been.

I don’t know … Mike, what’s wrong? She demanded. She had seen the family and how devastated the Alley’s looked.

Family emergency, he said quietly. Mike turned quickly when the doors to the operating room flew open. Bobbie was rushing beside the gurney to escort the child to recovery but he didn’t see Shell.

Josh looked at Mike for a second. I’ll wait outside of recovery for Bobbie but … where’s Shell? He caught a glimpse through the door and motioned for his friend. Hell with it man, get in there … she knows.

    * * * * *

Shelly glanced up at the monitor and nodded for the anesthesiologist to start letting off the meds now. What a mess! She was still fuming that the children didn’t have an adult with them on the boat. A sixteen year old boy was not an adult! He about drowned trying to save his little brothers and the doctors finally had to sedate him so that he could recover. Where were the parents?

Bobbie studied Shell’s eyes over the mask. She had been amazed at the fast pace that Shell had set but two kids were at stake here and they knew it. How someone could bark orders from the next room and concentrate, running back and forth — switching gloves and gowns…well, she was impressed with her best friend. The other little boy had been taken to recovery and Shelly was finally backing out. When they released the clamps the blood was flowing freely through the artery repair. With any luck and God’s intervention … this kid had a chance to walk again. Bobbie was thankful that Shell had come to the islands when she did. Several lives had been changed and many had been saved by Shell’s talent as a surgeon. Bobbie knew that she and Tillie would not have been able to do this. She knew her limits and wondered absently if Michelle Brooke even had any …

Shell’s hands hovered midair and began to shake. Her eyes filled with panic and she froze. I … I need someone to close please! She cried out.

Shell … what’s wrong? Bobbie saw the devastation on Shell’s face and panic.

Bobbie, I need you to finish for me! Shell cried again as she backed away from the table. Bobbie stepped in and took over. Their island friend, Tila grabbed Shelly as she slid to the floor and carried her into the other room. Bobbie moved quickly to finish the boy’s surgery.

She passed out? Bobbie yelled, not believing that something like that could happen.

Attila glanced out at Bobbie and nodded. Poor Michelle … She whispered. She said ‘Annie’ just before she went down. Something has happened to Annie, Bobbie … Shelly sat up and slid off of the gurney. Shelly, take it easy honey. Tillie hurried back to steady her. What has happened to Annie?

Bobbie closed the boy’s final layer of skin and looked at the others in the room. Please monitor Adam for a few minutes while I check on Dr. Brooke. They nodded and Bobbie pulled down her mask and hurried into the other room. What is it Shell — what has happened to Annie?

Shell was still shaking. Someone … a stalker … Van Haven’s brother … Shell was sobbing so hard that Bobbie pulled her close.

Jonathan Van Haven had a brother? Why didn’t we know that? Bobbie stared at Tila over Shell’s shoulder.

Half brother … Jeremy … he and Victoria took Annie, Bobbie! Shelly was crying.

When …? Bobbie stared at Shell’s face.

Last night on her way from the book signing — Annie decided to walk to the motel. Why did she do that Bobbie? Why did it just now hit me? Shell plopped into a chair and took some deep breaths. She was trying hard to think — trying hard to get her breath and think.

I think someone knew that you were needed here, Shelly. Bobbie knelt in front of her. Get it together honey, I will escort Adam to recovery and check on Abraham, then we will get someone to cover us and we will find Annie. Do you hear me? We will find her! Bobbie knew how close the sisters were. Annie was a dear friend and like a sister to Bobbie but Shell and her sister was really close. Shell nodded and Bobbie kissed her cheek. We will get through this together. She hurried out and started speeding everyone up to get the boys settled.

    * * * * *

Mike hurried into the surgical ward and then knelt in front of his wife. You know? He asked and she nodded. He pulled her into his arms and held her close. We will find her. Shell was still shaking and Tila had already told Mike that she passed out. Did you hurt anything when you went down? Shell shook her head. Are you going to talk to me?

He barely heard the whisper when Shell asked; Mama?

They are with the kids, honey. We are packed and ready to go with transport as soon as you and Bobbie can leave. Are you okay? Mike knew that she would get it together quickly but this was a shock. He dreaded what his wife was about to do. Jeremy Valdez was going to regret the day he was born …

Shelly stood up and headed out. Mike and Tila stared at each other. Tila turned and grabbed the phone off of the wall and started making calls. She was impressed that the family had doctors en route to cover her friends. If there is anything you need … if you need me … I will be there. Tila told Mike and he nodded and hurried out behind his wife. Bobbie was standing outside of recovery with Josh’s arms around her. She pushed away and headed to her best friend. Let’s run through a shower and then we will check on the boys again. Ariel and Boston will be here any moment.

Fine, I just want to make a call first … They all followed Shelly as she ran into her office. She grabbed her cell phone and called Maggie. Hey Maggie, where is the team?

Shell …? Oh hi! We just reached the Hilton. I have Lizzie and Marco with me … Bart is taking us upstairs. Are you en route yet? Maggie hesitated and Darla and Sam slowed their pace. How soon will you be here?

We’re waiting for doctors to cover us and then we will be en route … Shell grabbed her duffle bag to find a set of clothes.

Great …! Maggie sighed. There’s no sign of foul play, Shell. We found where Annie was taken from. It was an alley near the hotel. I think Van Haven took a kick because he threw up in the alley … least we think it was him … we are waiting on the forensics team.

Annie probably struggled … Shell hesitated. We’ll get there as soon as possible. I have my phone.

Okay Shell. Lizzie and Marco want us to stay in their penthouse. Marco has turned over part of his studio temporarily for us to work. We’ll find her, Shell, Maggie said softly.

Tell Lizzie thanks, Maggie. Yeah … we’ll find Annie and the bastard better not hurt … Shell hurried toward the showers and Bobbie met her. She saw the angry look on her face and Bobbie was sure that Shell needed to hit something so she wasn’t going to say a word. We are hitting the showers now … we’ll call from Key West for an update.

I’ll tell the team, Shell, Maggie said gently. She had no idea what to say that could ease the pain that she heard in her friend’s voice. Shell had already clicked off.

Is she okay? Sam asked as the three agents headed to the security office. Maggie gave her a look. Of course she isn’t okay. That was stupid, I know.

Darla slowed down outside of the office. There is more than one victim here guys …

Katie has to be devastated, Sam said softly. Why does this happen to good people, Darla? I just don’t understand. Shell doesn’t need to be dragged back into this life. Who would want to take Annie?

Darla and Maggie just looked at each other. Maggie turned and stared out the window for a moment and finally commented. Who knows why this kind of crap keeps happening? It seems that the bad guys always outnumber the good guys. I guess that’s why we have a job, right?

The other two heard the cynicism in Maggie’s voice. Her life had not been an easy one. Michelle and her family meant the world to Maggie as well. She had never had a family and the Alley women broke her resistance and welcomed her in spite of the chip on her shoulder.

    CHAPTER TWO

Bart sat behind his desk as Matthew and his team looked at the surveillance feed and the information on Valdez. Matthew Colburn had a reputation and he was considered a legend already in the FBI. Bart was aware of the fact that this man loved the Alley women and Michelle had been like a daughter to him. That’s why he had called him in immediately. Matthew motioned for Charlie and the female agents entered the room.

Charlie, Darla, we need to run everything we can on Valdez and his mother. Why didn’t we know about this guy? Matt was growling … nothing new.

Sam stepped behind her husband, Alan, who was typing away on one of the computers. Darla stood behind her husband, Charlie, who was on the phone. Both women looked at Matthew fondly and shook their heads as they took over the information department and let the guys work. Maggie paced as she studied what they had of the scene.

Chief, this is what we know so far, Sam began. Victoria Van Haven is almost out of money. Although her property is paid for and she has one of the most beautiful estates outside of Miami, the woman has spent money like running water. That is probably the reason behind this.

Darla took over. Jeremy Valdez has lived in Spain at one of the Van Haven estates. He is only twenty-three years old and has just finished college — Yale, no less — and he is working with the Van Haven industries, trying to help his mother out. Van Haven had always been the one to live with their mother — or at least — he was the one that was always running the business and visiting his mother the most except when she stayed at their villa in Spain … which looks like a good part of the year. I have no idea why no one had picked up on Valdez but evidently Victoria had kept the boy a secret for a long time. We aren’t even sure that Van Haven knew about the boy. His mother visited their villa in Spain and spent part of the year there but Van Haven didn’t spend much time there at all. He was the traveling playboy and it seems like Van Haven’s own man — Tila’s husband, Parker — didn’t know about the boy either. Victoria hid her secrets well.

Yes, she did. Charlie sat back. Evidently Valdez’ father was Marcus Valdez who is a big drug lord that the C.I.A. put away last year. So, the boy turned to his Mama for help.

But why did they take Annie? Maggie had stopped pacing and picked up the copy of Annie’s last book. She was smiling when she read the title. Obviously, this was another FBI series about Shelly. I love this book. ‘Might Doc’…she has Shell pegged doesn’t she? Maggie flipped the book over to see the last photo that Marco had done of Annie. Oh. My. God …! The tall stunning redhead paled.

Darla and Sam jumped up to go to Maggie. She looked like she just saw a ghost. What’s wrong, Maggie? They asked in unison. They stared as Maggie turned the back of the book for them to look at.

Annie looks just like Katie in this picture. I mean … JUST like Katie! They all looked.

But … it says; ‘Annabelle Alley’ … you think this guy thinks she is Katie and she is using an alias? Matt asked as he stared at the photo that seriously could be a picture of Katie.

A lot of people use a pen name, Chief. It’s possible that Victoria thought Annie was Katie using a different name … Sam walked around and looked at the picture of Valdez and then the picture that they had put up that showed the most recent photo of Victoria Van Haven. The lady was obsessed with Katie after her son died. She sued her and lost the case, remember?

She has a point, Chief, Alan said as he stared at the pictures also and then back at the photo of Annie. Even if Annie told them that she wasn’t Katie … she wouldn’t tell them that she was Katie’s daughter. Neither of the girls would offer that information.

So… Charlie stood up. If we can find them — when we find them — we could use the information to mess with Valdez and Victoria …

Matthew stood up and shook his head. It doesn’t really matter which one they got. Shell’s going to kill the bastard.

That’s a fact. Bart stood up with the rest of them. Chief, if you don’t mind, I’d like to get someone to cover my position here and deal with the local law enforcement. I would appreciate it if you would let me help at Liz and Marco’s place. I’d like to be there when Katie and Tom show up.

Matt sized the man up and realized that he got hold of him a lot faster than most of them would have and he had saved them valuable time. We would appreciate your help. He shook the man’s hand and they all headed out.

    * * * * *

Shelly jumped out of the Jeep and ran toward the marina. Mike, Bobbie and Josh followed a little slower. I think Shell has herself in control now, Mike, Bobbie told him. They all watched as Katie held onto Shell sobbing and Shell reached out to hold her Daddy’s hand. Where do you think they have taken Annie?

We’ll check out Victoria’s estate before we fly to New York, Mike said as they walked slowly toward the plane. I have a feeling they may have headed to Spain. He stopped when he saw Bobbie, pale and shaking, stop and stare at him. Van Haven and her son have a villa in Spain. The woman doesn’t know that we know that yet, Mike said bluntly. We’ll check out her place outside of Miami and then contact Matthew. Mike had already done some research from Shell’s office while they were waiting on them. Bobbie looked at him with a raised eyebrow. Yeah, Shell knows.

You guys really surprise me sometimes and I have no idea why … I should have expected you would be on top of this already. Bobbie shook her head and headed toward the family. She soon caught up with them and Katie scooped her into the embrace like she would have another daughter.

Josh fell in step with Mike. They were carrying the girl’s briefcases and laptops. What does Shell think? He asked as they watched the family in front of the plane and hurried toward them.

Shell thinks that we might find out more information in Miami at the Van Haven estate but she believes that they have headed to Spain as well. We’ll contact Matt while we are in the air and let them invade Van Haven’s offices while they are in New York. We probably won’t see the group until we all get to Spain. Mike had acted on what Shelly was thinking and he was pretty sure that Shell was right on this one. They caught up with the family and everyone loaded into the large float plane. Tom and Shelly were already climbing in the front.

Mike grabbed Caleb as soon as he got to his seat. Hey Bubba, is everything ready to go?

Yeah, Daddy, Caleb told him solemnly. Bobbie is staying with Nana. She has little Joshua and Baby and Legs are taking care of my sisters. What a little man! Mike was proud of his son. He was trying to make sure everyone was covered.

Well, who’s taking care of my son? Mike asked Caleb who looked up at him and smiled. Josh had already went back to sit with his son so Bobbie could stay with Katie.

You are Daddy! Caleb said softly. And I will take care of you. You and Mama have to eat and so does Josh and Bobbie.

Let’s get in the air first and I will carry stuff up to your Mama. Mike ruffled Caleb’s blonde curls. Both of the twins got Shell’s curly hair but Trina looked like her Mama. Caleb looked like him. They all made him a very proud man.

Tom and Shell had the plane in the air. JC was waiting for them at the marina and they would take his car while he took the float plane back to the island. Mike hurried up front and handed Shell ice tea and a sandwich. You have had nothing to eat all morning, Shell. Please, eat a bite, he said gently. She looked up and him and pulled him down for a kiss. Hmm … that was nice, but you still have to eat a little, okay?

Shell reached for the tea and sat it on the console and then took the sandwich. I am hungry. Thank you. Daddy did you eat? Tom nodded and flashed her smile. How’s Mama doing?

Mike looked back. Bobbie and Josh are with her. I think she’s doing okay but I will check on her again. Eat wife!

Shell heard the incoming call in her headset. Destiny Charter, do you copy?

Jeb … is that you? Shell asked.

Yes Shell. What is your location? Jeb answered. He was another pilot that worked with the Charter service but since he married Katie’s best friend that was like an aunt to Shell and Annie, he had based out of Atlanta and Key West. Jeb was always a lot more mobile and took care of a lot of the company’s business just like Andy was the company’s attorney and also an extra pilot. It just kept things in the family that way.

I’m bringing the jet to Belize City, Shell. Then I can take the family to Atlanta while you and Mike do what you need to do. I thought it might be quicker for all of you, he answered.

Shelly thought for a few minutes. That should save us a lot of time. How soon will you be here? She was glad that he had thought about it. They would fly straight to Miami and check out the Van Haven estate.

I should be at the airport in … about an hour, Shell. You won’t have to wait long, he answered and smiled. Everyone was rallying as fast as they could to help the family. Tina had been losing it when she couldn’t get hold of Shell or Katie but by the time she had called … everyone was either in surgery or en route to the marina.

We’ll sort out who is going where and be ready to roll when you get here. Thanks Jeb … thank everyone for us, Shell said with a husky voice. She was touched at how everyone was trying to help.

You got it. Tom, you hang in there! He said.

Thanks buddy … we appreciate you guys, Tom said quietly and looked at his youngest daughter. I’ve got the landing, Shell. Go spend some time with the kids. She nodded and headed to the back.

    * * * * *

By the time they headed to the airport, they had decided that Tom, Katie and Bobbie would go with Shell and Mike. Josh would keep Shell’s Doberman with them and help with the children unless they needed them. Everyone decided that Shell and Katie needed Bobbie with them and Bobbie would have put up a fight otherwise. She knew that Shell would find a way to get hurt — she always did.

They had the luggage sorted and were sitting in the bigger passenger plane that Destiny Charter had purchased to replace the nice one that they destroyed when Mike and JC had to do a belly landing bringing the injured and Shell back from the Guatemala mission. This one was even nicer and they
