Dedication
We typically stumble upon the important people in our lives. I was blessed with four people in my short fifteen years of life. The bald-headed man everyone fears became a gentle soul; one who allowed me to believe in myself. The lighthearted basketball player spoke with such gentleness that it began to heal my wounds. Then there was the girl who I misjudged upon first meeting, who later revealed herself to be an amazing woman who I truly admire. And I’d never forget the beautiful heartbreak that unlocked my thoughts, making all of this possible.
I believe the unexpected gifts are the true blessings.
Thank you all.
5 AM
Now that I am alone in my room,
as alone as sharing a room with three people can be,
I get to sit and listen to my thoughts as I try to clear my head;
or so you'd think.
Instead I hear the heavy rhythmic breaths of my eldest sister;
the never-ending clicking of the whirling fan above me;
the gentle turning of my younger sister beneath me.
So now, as everyone is fast asleep,
this house is anything but silent.
Still, my thoughts continue to eat away at me.
Ideas fill my brain like a flood,
memories washing ashore,
emotions running through my veins.
Even as I lay here nearly dead, my body is so alive.
Admiration
I watch you in admiration.
Studying your simple beauty, the change of expression at different situations and sights.
My favorite moment is when I lose you inside your mind. The blank stare into nowhere so focused. The confusion that washes over you once you pull yourself back to reality, trying to catch up with the conversation, as if I wouldn't have noticed.
I love to hold you in my arms, feeling as though everyone around us has disappeared. Those brief moments of embrace have me counting down the minutes until I see you again.
I feel the need to protect you. My precious princess; I guard your palace doors day and night, fighting off the relentless intruders.
You're as delicate as a freshly bloomed tulip, and as rare as a blue diamond, worth more to me
