Introduction: What Does Proofreading Really Mean?
Proofreading means checking a document that has already been laid out (hopefully by a layout professional, also known as a graphic artist, graphic designer, or, in the case of books, a book designer) to make sure it contains no last-minute content errors or layout errors.
Proofreading usually means working with a printer-ready or duplication-ready PDF file, flagging the errors for the layout professional to correct. Other times it may mean working with an unbound galley proof from a traditional printer, or a sample bound print-on-demand (POD) book. Regardless of format, the printer-ready version of the book is being submitted to the author or professional proofreader for approval before being published and made available for sale or distribution.
