Life doesn't come with a manual. As one reaches the upper register of our earthly human cycle, often unexpected challenges present themselves. At age 89, Sister Carol Ann reflects on some of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual changes that have transpired in her own geriatric journey. She offers wisdom and perspective in the hope of helping others traverse their unique personal pathways to the end-of-life transition.

Sister Carol Ann Collins entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame convent at age 18 and will celebrate her 90th birthday in 2019.  Her journey in this calling has afforded her the opportunity to travel all over the world and serve in a multitude of leadership capacities.  Even at this advanced stage of life, Sister Carol Ann retains a sharp and unique perspective on society, spirituality and sensibility.  She is fast approaching her 70th jubilee year with SSND and endeavors on a daily basis to continue growing and evolving in faith and love.

    Foreword

    addressing my potential audience

    and setting out my purpose

Until I officially retired at age 82, I was too busy—scheduling, planning, travelling from place to place—to notice my octogenarian body, mind and spirit beginning to morph into a new kind of being. As the subsequent years, months, days continue to unfold without someone else’s schedule determining mine, my awareness of significant changes in how I think, sleep and move keeps growing sharper. I have time and space now not only to discover, but also to record in writing, details of my late-in-life journey. I don’t recall anyone ever teaching me (or even suggesting how) to behold, hold onto, and cherish such important lessons that I am learning throughout these unique twilight years of my life.

I sense an inner calling and impelling desire to write the story of what I am learning now (in my 80’s) and to offer my personal reflections as a legacy to the living members of my hereditary family and close friends, including the School Sisters of Notre Dame, all of whom have touched and molded me with their presence, their influence, their challenges.

While the text I create here is taking on the form of a book, its contents are not specifically intended to be read cover to cover. My desire is to present a smorgasbord of reflective essays on the human experiences of an aging person. The table of contents serves as a compass, pointing to specific late-life issues and lessons learned as events and scenarios continue to become my personal life’s last chapter classroom. An appendix of suggested reflection questions on each chapter provides opportunity for you to contemplate your own life in relationship to growing older.

A readers’ alert seems appropriate here. The content of my text includes little,
