Acknowledgements
I dedicate this eBook to all those who have contributed to my learning, during over forty years of veterinary practice. I humbly recall the privilege of meeting and treating a great many noble animals and dedicated people who care very deeply for their animal companions.
About the Author
Christopher Day qualified from Cambridge University and Veterinary School in 1972. He is Principal of The Alternative Veterinary Medicine Centre, in Oxfordshire - website: www.alternativevet.org.
Introduced to homeopathy at about the age of ten or eleven, he used this type of medicine on himself through school and college, for all the usual colds, flu, rugby injuries etc., to great effect. He started using it on some of his patients from the outset of his veterinary career. His use of homeopathy increased rapidly, taking up an increasing proportion of his practice time. His interest in natural medicine led him to take up acupuncture, having studied abroad, and he now uses these two medical systems, in conjunction with other ‘alternatives’, including chiropractic manipulation, herbs, tissue salts, flower essences, aromatherapy etc., in his holistic medicine practice. In 1987, he founded the Alternative Veterinary Medicine Centre (AVMC), the first dedicated holistic practice in the UK. Healthy nutrition is a mainstay of all his daily holistic work, in which he discusses a species-suitable fresh diet for each and every patient.
He is Veterinary Dean to the Faculty of Homeopathy. He was, for more than twenty-five years, Honorary Secretary of the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons, of which he was a founder-member. He has served two terms as President of the International Association for Veterinary Homeopathy, of which he was also a founder-member. He is actively involved in clinical research and treats all species with natural medicine. He has written several books and eBooks on homeopathy, herbs and natural medicine. He lectures around the UK on many aspects of natural medicine and holistic medicine to a wide variety of audiences and teaches vets on post-graduate courses both in the UK and around the world.
Preface
This eBook has come about as a direct descendent of a series of articles posted on Facebook, entitled "Homeopathic First-Aid Medicines". Those articles were forty in number. Not only does this book expand that number to fifty medicines but it also gives more information on each.
Many people who care for animals are not only prone to feeling a little helpless when their animal companions are sick or injured but are perfectly capable of carrying out responsible and effective first-aid, given sufficient information. This book provides much information for folk who wish to try. There are other eBooks that complement this text so a visit to www.lulu.com/spotlight/chrisdayvet may be constructive for the reader who wishes to expand his or her knowledge.
The main website for the Alternative Veterinary Medicine Centre is at: www.alternativevet.org. Christopher Day has also built a website on natural feeding: www.naturalfeeding.uk and one on chiropractic-type manipulation: www.chiropractic-vet.co.uk.
Any comments or suggestions for this eBook will be welcomed and might affect the next edition. Please make contact if there is anything that you feel should be addressed.
Introduction
Homeopathy never ceases to amaze with its ability to stimulate recovery in so many emergency situations, enabling meaningful home help for affected animals in a prompt and timely fashion. Emergency and first-aid application of homeopathy can be very empowering.
This eBook is intended to provide easy access to the uses and applications of a number of readily-available homeopathic medicines, in the treatment of emergencies and common illnesses in family pets. It should be helpful to animal carers and veterinary surgeons alike.
While not being designed to replace proper veterinary care where appropriate, it is designed to enable the reader to give something relevant and beneficial while awaiting the vet in serious emergencies or to prevent the need for a vet in less dire situations. Appropriate homeopathic medicines may also be given while an animal is under veterinary care, in order to boost your animal’s endogenous healing capability, with no fear of disrupting your vet’s treatment.
Dogs, cats, cage birds, poultry, goats, farm animals, horses, ponies, donkeys and other animals are all equally considered and the medicines are also safe for ‘exotic’ pets including
