Pressure Point Therapy for Pets - Dr. Michael Pinkus

    INTRODUCTION

Definition: A Pressure Point is an area of stress in your pet’s body. More specifically, it is a tiny muscle that has tightened up around a nerve, cutting off vital nerve energy. By finding and treating the Pressure Point, which is done by applying light finger pressure over the point or area, the energy once again flows.

    Pets Amaze Me

The surreal moments of having a furry creature sitting on the couch next to me, receiving and giving love, entertaining me, playing, listening (mostly) and understanding (all of the time it seems, but selec- tively complying) — is simply beyond comprehension.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association about one in three in the US own a cat and/ or dog. That’s 80 million households known as ‘Home Sweet Home’ by more than 150 million cats and dogs!

To say we love our pets is an understatement; our love is as real as you’d experience with a human. Maybe even more!

And when your pet becomes ill, it can break your heart. It is this heartfelt love for all animals that has prompted me to write this book.

My first inkling that pets respond to touch (which subsequently led to this technique, Pressure Point for Pets) was when I was a child. My Uncle Len and Aunt Norma had a standard poodle named Pinky. He was apricot in color, smart as a 3rd grader and very friendly. One day Len, while holding Pinky on his lap, started rubbing him behind his ears. Pinky went into a complete relaxation state, not moving a muscle. I asked Len what had just happened. He told me that pets loved to be worked on or massaged, even more than humans.

Fast forward two decades, I became a chiropractor. The concept of using healing hands became the central focus of my life. After thousands of treatments, I codified a technique and wrote a book called Pressure Point Therapy: The Complete Do-It-Yourself Treatment Manual (for humans!) Pressure Point was very successful in resolving most conditions reported by patients in my practice. I also discovered I could teach Pressure Point Therapy to others and that they could easily use it at home on themselves and on their family members. It’s easily learned, and no prior medical training is needed.

After hundreds of radio and TV interviews in the US, Canada and as far away as New Zealand, Pres- sure Point Therapy was becoming a popular grassroots movement. The concept was even picked up by Public Television and my show has aired nationwide for several years now.

The segue into applying my Pressure Point technique with my pets was a natural transition for me. First, it was curiosity, I wonder if this would help Fido? Then, it was a matter of trial and error. Both my wife and I would notice a remarkable change after using Pressure Points on our cats and dogs. For some, the effects were instant and astonishing.

As time went on and I became more confident and proficient with this technique, I realized the pets I encountered, whether they were my own or pets that I was seeing for the first time, all seemed to have an innate awareness that I was going to help them feel better. Strange but true! Note: this will most likely happen to you, too, once you become comfortable and proficient at using Pressure Point Therapy on your pet(s).

To further my research, I spent a great deal of time studying the quadruped’s anatomy. (OK, I promise I won’t give you big medical words here. This one just slipped out. A quadruped is an animal with four legs, like a cat or dog. Derived from quad = four; ped = foot.)

I began to further correlate Pressure Points that I used on humans to the pet’s anatomy. Also being mammals, cats and dogs have a spine, similar muscles and nerves, all in pretty much the same place as humans do. I also began applying other natural health techniques to my furry ones, such as vitamins and nutrition. This was way before Holistic Pet Health became popular or mainstream, which is occur- ring now at a rapid pace. You will also find some of my nutritional suggestions in this volume.

All of this said, YOU will be able to learn this technique and successfully use it on your pets. The tech- nique is documented here and I will continue to update it on my website.

Just as a note, I am not a veterinarian and most likely, neither are you! Pressure Point Therapy for Pets is not intended to replace your pet’s healthcare provider. No, I do not have a practice or a clinic for animals. I have however, worked with my veterinarians, showing them this technique and they have been quite impressed.

As you will discover in this book, working with your veterinarian can go a long way. I encourage you to study, apply and learn this technique with your pet, then bring the book to your vet. As veterinary medicine is becoming more holistic, I am sure you’ll have very favorable responses, as I have.

There are also a number of precautions outlined in this book. The main rules to always remember when applying Pressure Point Therapy for Pets are:

    (1) Always be on guard and protect yourself

    (2) Never be too bold or take for granted that your pet is your baby.

Your pets are domesticated animals, but still have protective mechanisms, animal instincts, etc. So, always keep your awareness very high when using Pressure Point for Pets. That said, this technique is very gentle and effective. If you can rub your dog’s back or pet your cat, you can use this technique. My Westies respond with wagging tails when I simply announce that I am going to work on them!

I’d like to thank you for your interest in this book and learning the technique. You’ll receive more Appreciation, wet slobbery kisses and licks from your pets than words can express!

    In Health,

    Dr Michael Pinkus

PART 1: PRESSURE POINT THERAPY FOR PETS– THE BASICS

CHAPTER ONE: ON BEING THE MASTER OF YOUR PET’S HEALTH

As a pet owner, it is a true statement that life is better having our four-legged friends around… much better!

Their distinctive personalities, cute faces and special way of communicating with us forge a unique bond that is on par, or even stronger than relationships with our two-legged counterparts. For proof, look no further than poplar pet euphemisms like ‘my baby,’ or ‘my first born.’ I have even heard, I have two children and Otis the dog.

Man’s or Woman’s Best Friend has aptly described our relationship with dogs for eons.
