    Culinary Pleasures

Michael placed his papers on the table and felt his heart beat quicken. This was it.  This was bigger than anything he had ever wanted in his entire life. And he was ready to show people that he was ready for this occasion, he was ready to prove to himself that he was good. The man looked at him, his expression blank. He did not say a word, his eyes never left Michael’s, he simply watched. And Michael had known that this would come, so he remained relatively calm, even though his insides were burning with excitement.

The man’s eyes shifted to the papers on his desk and he smiled. It was slight, a twitch at the corners of his mouth. Blink and you would miss it entirely. He opened the first page with his pinky finger and read the contents on the page. He seemed bored. Michael had not expected that. The last thing he expected was dealing with a bored man. Suddenly his chances were turning to zero.

You think you can work in my restaurant? the man asked, his voice was a low rumble. It was deep however and Michael felt it go straight to his lungs. For a moment he was not able to breath. But his brain was still working and he was processing the question. Did he want to work there? It had been his dream to work there from the moment he first decided that he was going to start taking the path he was going on now. But he could not say all that, the questions required him to answer on a yes or no basis.

Yes, he said as calmly as he could.

And you think your papers support you? This was the twist, and Michael knew there was going to be a twist. So he looked at the man and smiled.

No, he said, shaking his head. The papers were not going to support him.

The man raised his eyebrows and cleared his throat, What do you mean? he asked.

I mean no, my papers won’t do the work for me. However, my hands will do the work for me. I have been learning a lot. More than these papers will tell you. And I want you to give me a chance to prove that to you, Michael said and felt like patting himself on his back.

He had not rehearsed that line; it had come to him automatically. And from the look of things, it had achieved the effect he had wanted all along.  The man leaned back and was now giving him more attention than he had intended. Michael felt like Einstein.

You are good with your words, the man said.

I am good with everything, Michael said and they both laughed. Suddenly the atmosphere was better. It was cooler now and Michael could feel himself breathing with ease again.  This was going to be fun.

Well, I want to see what you can do with those hands, he said getting to his feet.

He was a tall man, taller than Michael had expected.

Michael got to his feet and smiled. He could not believe it. Earlier that day, he had been in the lobby, or rather what was meant to be the lobby with twenty-five more people. Right now he was the second to last to be interviewed and he had watched the rest come out looking like they had just received a beating. He was sure that no one had been given such an opportunity. It was now his time to shine.

He slowly got to his feet and rolled his sleeves.  This was going to get very interesting very soon. And he was going to impress this guy so much that he was going to hire him permanently.

This way please, the man said leading Michael towards the impressively built kitchen. The sight was to die for. Everything Michael had ever thought of was in there. It was his ideal kitchen and he was ready to impress the man. Thinking fast, he started to move around; he wanted to make something easy and fast. It also had to be impressive.

You have fifteen minutes, the man said calmly and walked away.

All the ingredients he would have wished to buy were there and now he was at a loss on what to make. What was he supposed to do in such a kitchen? Thinking fast, he decided he was going to make fish. Fish was the easiest and there was fish in the refrigerator. He was going to make it so well that the man would not think twice about hiring him. And so he started working as fast as possible. The kitchen was efficient and he had trained a lot.

In fifteen minutes, he was done and was slowly serving his food on a clean plate. He tasted his food, everything was great. The marinade was great as well. There was no way the man was going to say no, not when Michael had worked so hard and so fast. He took the plate and walked confidently back to the office. In the office were two men, Michael knew one of them well. He had spent the last few hours with him. Then there one was the man who was supposed to be his boss.

Placing the food on the desk, next to his boss, Michael took a step back.

See what I was telling you? This man is talented Brian, he made this in fifteen minutes, the man said and Brian smiled.

You know there is loving the art and knowing the art. There is a difference in both and many a times people mistake them for one, Brian said and smiled some more. His eyes went to Michael and sized him. Michael did not like this at all. What the hell was the man talking about? Was he calling him mediocre?

Why don’t you take a bite cowboy? Michael said. He could not help himself. The man had no right to insult him.

Brian did not hesitate; he took a knife and sliced a piece of fish before taking it into his mouth. He closed his eyes and rolled the food in his mouth chewing delicately as if trying to taste every fiber in the fish. Michael knew that each flavor he had used was well represented.  He held his breathe, he did not know that his fate would rely on someone like Brian.  Brian got to his feet and walked to the waste bucket where he dumped he contents in his mouth.

He is good, I have to give him that. But he needs a lot of sharpening before you allow him to work for you, he said and Michael bunched his fists.

I am going to hire the both of you, the man who ran this show said and smiled. This time it was a full blown smile.

Oh come on, me and him in the same kitchen? Brian asked.

Are you afraid of a little competition? the boss asked. Brian got to his feet and laughed. Competition no way. He was not afraid.

Good, we are going to work together then, he said and their boss smiled. This was going to be interesting.

But Michael did not see anything interesting. He had only known the man for a few hours and he did not like anything about him. To start with the man was rude. He did not originally work there, but acted as if he owned the place. He, too, was there to apply for a job as a chef, but it seemed as if the boss knew who he really was. And he seemed to have a lot of respect and recognition for him.

Brian, leave us alone.  We need to talk, he said and Brian looked at him as if he had said something out of this world. But the boss was not joking. He needed the man out of the room and he was the boss, and he expected to be obeyed.  And so Brian got to his feet and walked out slowly. The boss looked at Michael and ushered him to sit down. He seemed to have something important they wanted to tell him.

Now, Michael, I am sure that you know you are hired, he started, taking a first bite at the food he had been made. It was not cold yet and Michael watched as the man ate with a lot of interest.

And it made Michael a little proud because the
