Introduction: Meeting Spice
27red:Users:default:Desktop:Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 16.31.06.png"Meow, my name is Spice. I am a cute Calico Cat apparently nicknamed the ‘Little Spoilt Princess’!
This book will be helpful to future cat owners, or ‘Cat Staff Wannabes’ as I call them. They need to understand exactly what is expected of them. By reading this book you will discover if you have the essential qualities for this calling and you will find out why Philip surprisingly added ‘spoilt’ to my title of ‘The Little Princess’."
Chapter 1: Humble Beginnings
Sugar and Spice, two Calico kittens came from humble beginnings. Their mother was a gentle white cat called Snowdrop. Very early in life, this small family experienced an impossible situation and were taken to the ‘Limada’, the local Animal Shelter. This story tells of the many adventures the kittens had during their ‘nine lives’.
One day an Officer from the ‘Limada’ collected Snowdrop and her two tiny kittens. The story was very sad. Snowdrop’s owner, Mrs Gibson was old and had become incapable of looking after her. When Snowdrop gave birth to two kittens, this made matters even more difficult. Mrs Gibson was admitted into a Residential Home but unfortunately, no pets were allowed. So it was decided that all three of the cats would go to the Animal shelter. Poor Mrs Gibson was upset but she need not have worried. The ‘Limada’ was well known for rehoming and her prayers were quickly answered.
Almost immediately, Snowdrop was adopted and went to a good home. Adult cats are more popular than kittens because they are house-trained and independent. Fortunately, the kittens did not have long to wait for a new family.
The next day a family of four came to the Shelter. Philip and Andrea Johnson were very sad, as they had just lost Adora, their Calico Persian. She had died in a road traffic accident and this was still fresh in their minds. They were hoping to find a kitten. Eight-year-old Philip and four-year-old Andrea immediately fell in love with the tiny kittens. Their parents decided that the kittens were too young to be separated and would be company for each other. The children were delighted, as they would have a pet each. They quickly signed the adoption papers.
Stroking and cuddling these tiny kittens was healing their emotions. It was helping to erase their bad memories. Their low mood was gradually lifting. The children and kittens quickly bonded and became inseparable. Philip and Andrea decided to give them names. They wanted to choose names, which would describe the different appearances and personalities of the kittens.
The little male they called Sugar, as he was white with caramel patches on his ears, back and tail. The patches also matched the colour of his eyes. He had a very sweet and loveable personality. He was Dad’s favourite.
Spice was so named, as it described her coat and the changing moods of her personality! She had a lovely silken, multi-coloured fur but her nature was very different to Sugar. One moment she would be very charming but then her mood could suddenly change. She would then show very clearly, that she wanted to be left alone! Tiny sharp claws would appear from the dainty white paws! She would then threaten, or sink them into whoever was closest to her! Even at this early stage in her life, everyone would know who was the boss! Enough really meant enough!
Spice’s coat was beautifully marked and could have been created by a master painter. Small blocks of black, orange and light brown fur covered her from head to tail. Her chest, underside and front paws displayed soft, snowy white fur. Spice’s little face had symmetrical patches of colour, with splashes of white just under her eyes. Her appearance and changeable personality meant that the name ‘Spice’ suited her perfectly.
Spices can be sweet smelling and delicious when added to certain foods. Apple pie with cinnamon or cloves was a great favourite with grandparents. Hot Chillies and Black peppers in the right quantity can really help the flavour in meat dishes. A mixture of spices can produce a delicious flavour or a burning sensation that is unlikely to be forgotten! Too many chillies, or hot red peppers in a meal, can make the diner’s eyes water uncontrollably. So ‘Mixed Spices’, or changeable moods, could perfectly describe this cute little Calico kitten.
It was not long before Sugar and Spice had settled into their new home. This was a large red brick house, situated in the peaceful Irish countryside. The enclosed garden, with its high wooden fences, was well stocked with flowering shrubs and fruit trees. There was much activity around the pond, even at night. It was used as a ‘watering hole’ by the local wildlife and a ‘free for all’ by many uninvited ‘guests’! The back garden faced south. So it captured the heat of the sun for most of the day.
The kittens lived in the ‘Utility Room’ and were not allowed out on their own. It
