    About the Author

Hello to the reader first things first I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for picking up my first book, it has been a long road but I got there in the end. I am new to the scene and I hope to become your favourite writer in the future like Richard Matheson is mine. I have always dreamed of becoming a writer. Since reading Richard Matheson’s I am Legend, which is my favourite book, and watching the walking dead series, which first aired when I was only fourteen, the two titles inspired me to keep going. I hope you enjoy my version of a zombie apocalyptic world, I’m trying to do something different. Everyone should have a chance at achieving their dream. Thank you again for picking this book up, I hope you enjoy it, Shawn Andrew Crabtree.

    Prologue

All the names, character, organisations, locations and events in this book are purely fictional to create my own settings and feeling for the unknown. A new adventure and a new exploration is what I am going for.

The world we know has gone into darkness, there are traces of the old world but you have to scavenge through the new rotten world to unearth them.

After an accident that put Isaac Strauss into a deep sleep for six months, he woke from his comatose state and he could not get over the stench of the new rotten world that challenges him every single day.

The days were long, but when the nights were longer. When night fell and the creations of darkness come out of the shadows of the buildings where they lay dormant waiting for the sun to go down, they would start their hunt wandering the streets on search for their next pray. Isaac hid and prayed for dawn, anywhere that would cover him from the night creatures and what they held in store for him.

They... started to spread among the old world six months before he woke. It did not take long for them to overwhelm the city of Novafield where he lays waiting to be awoken. Novafield is overrun and maybe the whole world, but we do not know how far the virus has spread its infectious rage. There are no lights, no communication, no electricity, the city has plummeted in to total darkness.

The infectious disease: the virus is ancient, it had been waiting to be freed from its dormant state since Bright Opus had been made. Now free it is hungry, scientists did not know what it was. The virus spread too fast they needed to understand it the make a cure but that takes time and time was not a luxury that they had.

A mining company off the coast of Antega was digging for fuel to keep their business going and the economy like you see today stabilised by supplying essential fuel, but they did not expect to dig up something that had been imprisoned for billions of years, Since the planet has been made.

During the unforgettable early days of the outbreak when the virus was at its hungriest, it spread faster than you could imagine. The infectious disease boarded planes sending them to plummet out of the sky in fiery rain.

At the crash sites those things were still resistant to death and spread in numbers, the dead bodies around the crash sites rose up once more, on the hunt for flesh. The virus is airborne meaning if you are lucky enough to die of natural causes, as there are much worse ways to die, the virus will snatch your body up making it another host to infect with its hungry intentions. It does not matter what you do in this world there is one thing that is certain and that is death. You can’t escape it. Death is coming for us all, and it comes in the shape of those who became infected. Treasure the time you spend with your loved ones because it could be your last.

The army: in the six months that Isaac was asleep in his deep coma, by day they had the outbreak under control but when night fell so did they. The virus forced them to the countryside and eventually fleeing Antega leaving a timer to start. When the timer gets to zero the bombs will drop. The army to save themselves for the greater good of the planet, would destroy a whole country to restore balance and bring back prosperity to the rest of the world.

While fighting the monsters in the night he has to try and solve his own misery in his head, but that was his worst fear.

In a city ruled by the dead, we are finally forced to start living and hard choices have to be made to secure a future for the living, no matter what.

    Chapter One

    The Accident

Seven months ago, before the Unforgettable Day they arrived, Isaac was driving down the motorway heading for Novafield even though he had no direction or destination in mind.

Speed and classic cars have always been in Isaacs Strauss’s veins. He has been a big fan of formula one since a child, he liked the speed and adrenalin. The roar of his car’s engine called out to him, shouting him to stop as the engine is under a lot of stress. He is going way too fast...

He drove the first generation Ford Mustang Fastback Pit Viper, made in 1967, the iconic classic muscle car had been imported from Stevenson Valley, off the coast of Omega where it had been built. Omega is the greatest country in the world, or so they say. Its previous owner imported the car, which was worth a small fortune, to Antega.

As soon as he switched on the engine he felt the power surging through the car, just raring to get off the starting line and race through the corners. The classic car had a big block V8 beast of an engine, the machine made an amazing, loud roar as he drove through the darkness of the night. It was jet black you could hear the car but you could not see it coming. All you could see were the round headlights beaming up the road like two oil lanterns on an invisible carriage, lighting up the cat eyes in the centre lane.

He was drinking heavily on a bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey knocking it back like it was water, he was enjoying the burning sensation in the back of his throat. Isaac was drinking to try and forget about his wife’s death but it was not working, it was actually doing exactly the opposite and making his memory flood back quicker than ever. Alcohol always brings out the worst, even in good people.

Isaac’s memory took him back to two months before that very day, it started off as a few minor annoying headaches that lasted for a couple of hours and then went away. Those minor headaches eventually escalated getting worse and worse, it took a toll on her mind making her forget things rapidly.

Isaac was beginning to worry, it was her birthday that day and she could not even remember, she could not even remember how old she was. Isaac knew there was something wrong and he was trying not to think of the worst but being human he did.

He took her to their local doctor, Dr Roger Hunt, he wore his name badge with pride like he had accomplished so much in his short lived life. He was young, between twenty five and thirty. His white doctor’s coat hung off his shoulders like it was two sizes too big, with two pens in his breast pocket above his proudly worn name badge, one was black and one was blue, the blue pen had leaked and stained the corner of the pocket and one side of his collar had a crease in the cotton.

This kid can't even dress himself properly in the morning before work, what the fuck am I doing here? I should have gone to someone who can at least iron a shirt properly, it looks like he has been trying to do origami Isaac thought annoyed with himself.

Isaac told the young doctor everything what had happened since the headaches started, so Dr Hunt took an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of her brain. The Dr asked the couple to wait in the waiting room while he prepared the results.

An hour passed, Isaac and Kate waited patiently in the seating area for Dr Hunt to return with the results. By the end of the hour Isaac had no finger nails left, he chewed away slowly like chisel to stone, cutting them down too far causing his finger tips to feel tender. With every passing minute he felt more sick in his stomach from the nerves, it was the longest hour he had ever had to endure.

He finally came back, Isaac can you please step into my office? Dr Hunt said nervously. What about my wife? Isaac asked. No Isaac just you Dr Hunt replied. Oh no this can’t be good Isaac whispered underneath his breath as he walked towards the office.

Isaac please take a seat the Dr said as Isaac walked underneath the archway of the door. No I’m happy to stand Isaac persisted with an unsettled tone to his voice. Please I think you’re going to need one for these results Dr Hunt said politely still looking nervous.

Just spit it out already doctor! Isaac said getting impatient, his eyes were puffy and red through lack of sleep. Yes Sir the doctor said hurry things up, he did not want to see the grieving man in front of him get more mad than he already was. The results show that Kate has a tumour growing rapidly in the back of her brain and the estimation of its growth is about 3cm per day. With that information in mind and my calculations I’m sorry to say that if she doesn't get the treatment she needs then she only has around three to six months to live. I’m very sorry Isaac I don’t want to be the bearer of this news but that is the worst part of my job. Isaacs’ body went weak and he looked to the ground with tears in his eyes how am I going to afford the treatment?

Within the given time she lost her memory completely, Kate turned from an independent, career driven woman into an immobile cabbage who lay in bed all day and night. Isaac looked after her, he spoon fed her, changed her clothes and bathed her. Isaac became her full time carer, he took good care of her and that became his every day routine.

Two months passed since he heard those painful results. He felt like a stranger in his own home, every time she looked at him it was like she did not even know him. The look she gave him was different to
