I stood on my front porch, staring at the distant point where the vibrant grass kisses the cloudless sky. Several thoughts ran through my head as I contemplated what to do with the rest of my life. I felt like I was constantly waiting: waiting to get a decent job, waiting to move out of my parents’ home, waiting to get married, and - currently - waiting on my sister to finish packing and get in the car.
We had just graduated and celebrated our eighteenth birthday - we were twins - in the same week, and now it was time to go on an adventure: the vacation we had been planning and saving for together since we were freshmen. Tammy came bursting through the front door and stumbled onto the porch, hands and arms full of suitcases, messenger bags, and various purses. As she tipped forward, I saw that she also had a backpack on. Do you really need all of that for a one-month trip?
I asked her. She looked at me as if I had just spoken some devilish language.
Of course I need all this. Why else would I have packed it, Sammy?
For our entire lives, Tammy and I had been convinced that our parents wanted us to suffer, because even though Tammy and I looked nothing alike and had opposite personalities, our parents had named her Tammy and me Samantha, christening us Sammy and Tammy when we learned how to say each other’s names and it became apparent that we would be best friends for life. Even though Tammy and I were completely different, we had been inseparable since childbirth, each of us always wanting to be involved in what the other was doing.
I’m surprised Cameron isn’t coming with us. Are you sure he couldn’t take the time off?
Tammy implored. Cameron is my boyfriend; we had first met in sixth grade when he started hanging out with Tammy and me, and he had taken such a deep interest in me that he asked me to the school dance that year. We’ve been practically inseparable since.
He can’t take a whole month off. Besides, this is supposed to be a sisters trip anyway.
We smiled at each other, waved goodbye to our parents, and ran to the car, giggling all the way. I helped Tammy pack her stuff into the trunk - somehow we made it all fit - and threw my one suitcase and backpack into the backseat. We climbed into the car, put all the windows down, turned the music up, and sped off toward the unknown - which I thought kind of symbolic at this point in our lives.
Hours of travel and several playlists passed before we finally grew tired and began considering stopping for the evening. We had reached a small town in the middle of nowhere that contained one store, one gas station, one bank, and two houses. After another half hour of driving, we found a huge, modern-looking hotel with an advertising sign that read Family Fun and Adventure Inn. Tammy and I glanced at each other as I pulled the car into the massive parking lot filled with various other vehicles.
Don’t you think it’s odd that a place like this would be stuck in a nowhere area?
Tammy asked.
If it’s truly a nowhere area, why are there so many cars? I’m sure it’s fine. A lot of tourists must pass through this area on the way to other places,
I replied. I pulled the car up to the entrance of the building and parked.
"Wait here; I’m going to see how much
