Songs for the Stars - J.R. Rogue
PART 1
can we, for tonight,
just be the moon?
curve into me like that
cheshire grin in the sky.
press your heart into my back.
let me forget my own.
SILVER LININGS
I often do not feel the
shiver of the night,
not as the others do.
(how they tremble.)
I tuck my feet under the covers and
read bedtime tales to my passions.
to the lies that litter my sheets.
needle and thread lie on the night stand.
they turn a wary eye to me.
(the frightened ones.)
for I know how to weave the morsels
the others fear into stories
that make them turn away.
I scatter hope within,
and hope that a few—
a few that are wise—
will grab onto the bits.
silver linings,
loving quiet lies.
THE UNSEEN
sometimes I think I see
the unseen.
there is a dark mark on my collarbone.
it is meant to ward those
who are better off
without me, away. but still, they come.
I fear there is a magnet under
bone & sinew.
I want to rip it out, so they no longer
walk up to my door. but I am
fearful of nights without them,
without the memory of you
& all the ways you pulled & pushed.
I traveled miles
& took another lover.
I followed footsteps,
the ones I was convinced would
drive you from this tired skull.
there's a softness I own
that I take out every so often.
I pull it from my pocket,
when guard is let down
& safety is in my vision.
I have it in my palm again,
for you & you alone.
take it.
THE ROMANTICS
the spring of our lives,
& we were making promises in the fall.
topsy-turvy turns this world,
& we are gripped hands
& loyal hearts
through it all.
nearly two centuries behind
& countless lives ahead,
where we will meet again & again.
time is ours and patterns
wear our names.
our smile lines tell the stories
we often want to keep to ourselves.
the moments only we know, we wear
them loudly.
for love, the kind such as this,
is a kind even the romantics
have never sold.
RED WINGS
press your palm here,
over my heart.
tell me my resolve
has not fallen.
I will rise & brush
the ashes from
my knees.
that life was not for me.
I am transcended.
abandoned, that word
will not stain this soul.
I am red wings
& reincarnation.
I am a cry in the night
& fresh sheets
upon a new haven.
the souls I have birthed
will remember
these days.
when strength grew
from my ribcage, taking root
in my throat, whispering
promises that I would
do no less,
than survive this.
& all the days hereafter.
press your palm here,
over my heart.
listen to my song.
BREAK ME OPEN
break me open,
count the pieces of you that
