About this ebook

Falling Forward is a book of poetry that gives you a piece of the author herself. A tiny light into the mind of an artist that has a passion for words like the greats who came before her. This collection like every other that this artist has written is her way of letting her readers into her mind if only for a few pages.

    Dedication

How do you even begin to tell the people who are most important in your life how much they mean to you?  Is it enough to dedicate your life works to them?  I don’t know, but I do dedicate this and everything else that I have written and will write in the future to my loving children, Aliyah, Anson, and Alexander.  You three are my muse, my strength, the only other thing besides my love for the Lord that keeps me hustling and making moves to do better and be better.

    Acknowledgements

I want to first thank my Heavenly Father. Without God nothing is possible, but with God, All Things Are Possible.

Alexander, Anson and Aliyah, thank you for being everything I always needed you to be.  Mom loves you all.

    A-1

I clung to every thought of him

    Dreamt of forever

    In his arms

Got lost for just one moment

    In the simple thought

    Of being touched by him

    Just once more

    Until I opened my eyes

    And realized

    That the dirt

Falling over the casket of my love

    Meant that forever

    Was lost

    A-2

I can see you staring at me

    Curiosity

    In your eyes

    Yes

    I have you wondering

    Guessing

    I checked other

    On my job application

    Used my middle name

    Because I know the game

    You eye the dark color

    Of this girl’s skin

    And you want to ask

Those words are on the tip of your tongue

    But you smile instead

    A-3

Foolish of me to think I’d cruise

    Through this life

    Without paying any dues

    But here I am

    Saddled with the blues

    Heart broken

    Bruised

    By the one person

    I never thought I’d lose

    A-4

    Fingers on your headstone

    My mind is blown

By how quickly life passes us by

    I trace your name

    And say a prayer

    Then look to the sky

    To say my final goodbyes

    Teetering on the edge

Of what could be something beautiful

    She loses her footing

And falls into his outstretched arms

    A-5

I’ve met a lot of boys

    Brown, yellow, white

    Short, tall, stocky and thin

    Some cute

    Some intelligent and interesting

Some artistic, finding creative ways to say that they want me

But it wasn’t until I met the man who said he needed me

    That I saw the difference

    A-6

    I’m brilliant

But you can’t see past the mocha complexion

To see me for the gem I am

    Resilient

    Taking no for
