    Chapter One

It seemed like it was just yesterday when they were holding each other so lovingly and taking many trips together. Yet, in reality, it had been such a long time since Wendell showed her love and affection. She yearned for his love again. She yearned for his touch.

    Where had the love gone?

Their love was so strong one time before. She wanted that love again. Today she would help him fall in love with her again by baking their favorite—an Eclair Cake.

He will love this. She stared at the pastries in the oven while licking her lips.

A smile appeared on her face. She could not wait to taste the cake. They were always so savory and melted in their mouth. It would be the icing on the cake they would need and enjoy together once she told him yes on this incredibly special day.

The sweet scent of strawberry vanilla, mixed with dough rising, filled the air. Exciting times would happen as soon as he got home, and she could not wait.

Glancing at the stove, she wondered when he would arrive. These days, it seemed like he was at work or hanging with the boys more often than not. Her stomach turned and her face fell into a frown as she thought about previous years.

Where is he? she asked herself, as if it would make him come to her side faster.

Claudia’s long-time boyfriend, Wendell, was not home. He had not been there for their last anniversary, either. Though, this time, he promised to be here. She trusted him and hoped he would return soon and, with the surprise she was expecting and hoping for. She had laid hints all around the condo. Claudia knew he knew what she desired this year. She desired it every year. Though she was not really religious as of late, she relied on her faith that Wendell would finally come through with the very thing she wanted.

He will do it, she encouraged herself.

Licking her lips again as the cake baked in the oven, she felt her body shimmy with enthusiasm.

Today is the day. She giggled nervously.

Yes, it was just a Saturday and usually Saturday was the day she cleaned, watched TV, went shopping, or hung out with her best friend, Tru. Not this Saturday! This Saturday was all about them and the love they would experience for years to come. Today was the Saturday that would change everything about their relationship.

Although she could not help but frown. It seemed these days she could not stay happy longer than a minute. Thoughts of how things had changed for them over the last couple of years filled her mind.

No! Claudia, we will not think on those things.

Still gazing at the oven and trying to have faith in their love, she pushed the thoughts aside.

This Saturday is different. It is going to be our special day. Yes, he’s going to propose.

She tried to keep her heart filled with faith. Her devotional this morning said to confess good over each situation, and it would turn out good. She was going to do just that. She was going to confess the good and watch what she desired take place.

On this anniversary, he will ask me to marry him, she reassured herself.

Claudia bit at her lower lip and held out her right hand, pretending there was a ring on it. Fifteen years and this finger was ready for the ring that never seemed to come.

She sighed at the thought and continued to confess. Today will be different. He will ask me today!

There were times the words sounded like false hope. Yet she had to keep saying it. She needed to have faith. It would happen in time. Her boo would not let her down, even though recently he had let her down many times before.

To calm her many thoughts and to remain hopeful, she inhaled and counted to ten. He was going to ask her today. She declared and decreed it. She would do so through the doubt and until it happened. Wasn’t that what they said to do in church when she went many years ago?

    Sighing and feeling
