      The Mist in the Roses was her favorite book. Tegan had read it over and over, until the binding was broken and the pages were falling out. The tattered book laid by her bedside and she read some of it every night before going to sleep.

      She loved the book so much that her mother got her the hardcover version, which she kept up on the highest shelf of her bookshelf, pristine and untouched. She thumbed through the pages carefully when she received it for her birthday and then put it in a place of honor, never allowing anyone else to touch it.

      She reread the tattered and worn copy, with the new one watching her from its place high up on the bookshelf.

      One night, she fell asleep while reading her old worn out copy and it fell to the floor, pages scattering everywhere. It was summer, so the box fan she had at the foot of her bed blew the pages around the room.
