    About the Author

For as long as she could remember, there was a jar on the highest shelf of the kitchen. It wasn’t a particularly pretty jar. In fact, it was downright ugly. It was a dark brown with red flowers sloppily painted on one side, and golden flowers embossed on the other side. The lid was made of cork and didn’t fit correctly, so it was always set slightly askew in the top.

Keiko’s mother had put it up there herself. She said that was where she kept her most precious possessions, so that little hands wouldn’t touch or break them. She also gave Keiko a stern warning that she was to never, ever touch the jar.

    Her mother never said much
