    About the Author

I hadn’t shut my bedroom window in over a year. The weather in northern California where I lived was so temperate, I hadn’t needed to. The summers weren’t too hot, and the winters weren’t too cold. My bedroom was on the second floor, and it was a small window with no balcony. It was in full view of several other neighbor’s condos. I had no worries of someone breaking in. So, it remained open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, whether I was home or not.

But this morning, there was a storm outside and the wind was blowing just right so that the rain was coming in through the screen and getting my windowsill wet.

I climbed off the futon mattress that I used as a bed and scuffed my feet over the lines of my recently vacuumed carpet to shut the window.

    It wouldn’t budge.

I pushed harder and finally, the window reluctantly, one inch at a time, managed to slide shut.
