Year of the Monkey is a 2019 memoir written by Patti Smith. The story is set during the year 2016 and how that year was challenging for her. The book is primarily about Smith's inner life in her 70s. It also includes her narration of when she made hospital visits to her dying friends' playwright, Sam Shepard, and journalist-producer Sandy Pearlman. The memoir contains her thoughts about the rise of populism and the dirtiness of the election battle.
Patti Smith's Year of the Monkey was published on September 24, 2019, by Knopf. It became a New York Times bestseller after its release.

Introducing Year of the Monkey
Year of the Monkey is a book memoir by Patti Smith. The book starts with Smith's stay at a place she called The Dream Motel
after booking a room there. A few days after, she met a new friend named Ernest, who, as what Smith wrote, was never afraid to speak out his real emotions, which was surprisingly similar to Smith's. The story continued with Smith's hospital visits with her friend Sandy Pearlman. Pearlman is a producer, manager, and a rock critic who was hospitalized after he suffered from a brain hemorrhage. Smith recalled the day she and Pearlman first met in 1971when Pearlman attended one of Smith's performances. Smith, at the time, was reading poetry in front of the audience, with the help of guitarist Lenny Kaye. After the show, Pearlman approached Smith. He told Smith that it would be a good thing if she would form a rock band. However, Smith just laughed at Pearlman and said to him that her job at the bookstore is already good enough for her. Eventually, later on, she took his advice and became successful after making her landmark punk album entitled Horses. Smith's friendship with Pearlman became stronger even until Pearlman got sick 50 years later after their first meeting. Smith and Kaye always stayed by Pearlman's side as he lay in his hospital bed in a comatose state. Smith wrote about how she and Kaye stood on either side of Pearlman's bed. They
