An Uncertain Future
Chapter I
Captain Teri Cambell sat quietly watching the stars fly past her. She was thinking of how as a small girl, her Father and she would set in the backyard looking up at the stars. He pointed out each constellation. Telling how the old time Mariners would travel the great oceans by sighting the north star. She was fascinated by the stories. Her twin sister Keri would become bored going into the house to take apart her Father's computer then put it back together again, attempting to improve it. Now she was traveling beyond her own galaxy, flying past stars unseen years before.
Captain.
She was brought out of her day dreaming by the urgency.
Yes, this is the Captain.
"We're picking up exotic matter, with heavy gravitational pull! Recommend you slow down!
Drop out of hyper supersonic speed and come to a stop.
The ship immediately slowed then came to a stop. Captain Campbell was on her feet.
Explain what is going on?
The man who was excited working in the astrometrics lab said I believe there is a wormhole Captain. We are scanning but are finding it difficult with all the matter we are being bombarded with.
Captain Cambell walked to the tall Valerian woman looking intently at a screen. Sharon, you have anything? I don't want to fall into a wormhole.
Sharon frowned I don’t see any openings. There is a tremendous amount of matter, I can’t tell.
Astrometrics do you have anything?"
No, we’re trying to determine if it is a wormhole, whether it is opening or closing!
I have a ship on screen. It is strange, I do not recognize it. It appears to be leaking some sort of vapor. I’m trying to get a fix, but so much interference.
Sharon said, concentrating on the screen.
Captain two pods just left the ship,
the young helmsman said.
Confirmed, two life signs in the pods, no other life signs on the ship. It is going to explode! I recommend shields up Captain! I believe it is nuclear!
Sharon said looking up worried.
Shields up! Jackson, can you extend the shields around the two pods?
Yes mam I have them.
Full reverse thrusters now!
The ship began to back up as the other ship exploded. The saucer rocked as the wave hit them.
Radiation levels high captain, the shields are protecting us but we should leave this area.
Sharon said as she looked intently at the computer screen.
Open the bay doors and bring in the two pods. Chief Bennett I need you and a team to the shuttle bay.
Teri looked at Priest Cooper who was on her feet. She nodded as Micky left for the elevator.
Jackson do you have the two pods?
She was interrupted by Chief Bennett Captain, we are at the shuttle bay, pods are in sight.
Okay Chief, Priest Cooper on her way. Keep me informed.
Teri walked to where Sharon sat staring at her computer screen. Teri looked intently at the screen seeing the strange ship whose image had been captured before it exploded.
Any identifying markings?
There are marking Captain, but I don’t recognize them.
It is strange, it looks like an old airplane with the back wings, but it is different. Did you say it was nuclear.
Yes
Sharon said hesitating, I have never seen a ship powered by nuclear energy. It is highly dangerous.
Teri walked back to her chair sitting down. She thought of her twin sister when they were younger living on a colony planet of Earth. Archaeologists had found a nuclear plant on Earth. The plans were found and sent to scientists on other planets to study. Keri who was thirteen built a miniature nuclear plant and powered a small city she had the computer create. It had lights, a running elevated tram and small vehicles that hovered off the ground. She was expelled from school since the experiment was so dangerous.
Captain we have a small problem here in the shuttle bay. You should come down here.
Teri stood up Okay Chief, you said a small problem?
Yes.
On my way.
Teri walked into the shuttle bay cautiously. She saw two security officers, behind Chief Judy Bennett. Priest Cooper was standing next to the Chief holding her chest. Two small children were standing in a defensive posture. They appeared to be about ten years old. A male and female, with red hair wearing what looked like a uniform. She walked up slowly as the Chief said, not looking at her.
Both children exited the pods. When Priest Cooper approached them with a medical scanner the young girl punched her in the chest.
You okay Micky?
Yes, she hit me in the sternum, she may have cracked it.
Teri said Chief you and you're team step back.
Judy looked at Teri you sure Captain?
Yes, now step back.
She slowly went to her knees looking at the children in front of her. MIcky go to your knees.
Okay, but if she comes at me, I’m hitting her back.
Both women were on their knees looking at the children. The children began to talk quietly between themselves.
Computer, analyze the language.
Analyzing now.
Teri looked over her shoulder Amy get me four language communicators.
The young woman looked at the Chief who nodded.
The two children were talking between themselves as Teri and Micky sat on their knees. Teri saw the boy look over her shoulder. She held out her hand as she watched the two aliens in front of her. Judy stopped handing her four small discs. She stepped back watching the children.
Teri handed Micky a disc which she put on her right chest. Teri also put a small silver disc on her chest.
Computer have you analyzed their language?
Yes it appears to be a form of latin.
Interface with the language disc’s and make adjustments.
She held the two remaining disc’s up then threw one to the boy who caught it. She threw the other to the girl. They looked at her then placed the disc on their chest.
We mean you no harm.
The young boy and girl looked shocked as they stared at the woman in front of them.
We want to help you.
Teri said, speaking slowly and softly.
They looked at each other as the girl asked How do you know our language?
The disc on your chest interfaced with the computer which has analyzed your language.
The girl pointed to MIcky what was she doing with the small device? Is it a weapon?
No,
Micky said standing up slowly. It is a medical scanner to check for injuries. The computer alerted me that you have been exposed to high levels of radiation. I had the shuttle bay flooded with particles to neutralize the radiation. I was attempting to check your vitals when you hit me."
Priest Cooper is a religious leader, as well as a medic, a Doctor.
Teri said quietly. Settle down Micky.
The girl looked at the boy, neither said anything.
May I treat your wounds?
Micky asked.
Yes, but no scanner.
The girl said, staring at the small Priest.
I won’t hurt you, I promise you.
I, we, don’t want to be scanned,
the girl said stubbornly.
The young boy looked at her whispering. The girl shook her head whispering back urgently.
Micky stepped toward the girl holding her medical bag. She opened it, as the girl looked inside. She reached out, taking the girls hand studying it.
You have a burn, it no doubt hurts.
She reached into her bag taking out a long slender cylinder. She pressed it against her neck. A hypospray that contains nanobots. They will heal the cracked sternum where you punched me. For no reason I should add. Allow me to help you.
The girl stood quietly watching as Micky placed the cylinder on the young girl's neck. She put cream on the girl's burns on her hand and neck. She walked to the boy and placed the cylinder on his neck. She sat the bag down taking his hand lifting his arm. He winced in pain. She stepped up to him putting her arm around his chest then pulled on the arm. He grimmised but did not make a sound. The girl looked at Micky.
I popped his shoulder back in place.
She walked back towards Teri who stood up. They appear to be fine. I would like to scan them to be sure Captain.
Teri nodded as she looked at the two children. I am Captain Teri Campbell of the Confederation of Earth. You are on my ship the d'Artagnan.
She was surprised as both children came to the position of attention placing their small fist across their right chest.
At ease,
She said
