Suzie and the Forest of Elves

Suzie loved the forest as soon as she saw it.  For weeks her family had been planning for a three-day camping trip in the state park and now they were here.

It was a bright, sunny day with a few white clouds floating across a deep blue sky.  The trees were not thick in this part of the forest, permitting a clear view of the sky overhead. It was not hazy as it was back in the city.

She stared up at the tall trees, the shrubbery, and the many-colored wildflowers. She inhaled, drawing in a deep breath of fresh air.

I wish we could live out here, she thought.

The warm breeze made a gentle rustling of the tree leaves as a pair of squirrels were having fun chasing after each other.  She could hear birds singing merrily in the trees.

Her dad parked the camping trailer, found a nice spot for their camp site, and set up a tent.

    The camp site

Her dad and big brother Sammy would sleep in the tent while Suzie and her mom would use the camping trailer.

Her mom laid out a blanket and the food for a picnic.  Suzie, her mom, her dad, Sammy, and even their dog Boo boo enjoyed a nice picnic lunch.

After lunch, she watched as Mom, Dad, Sammy, and Boo boo played with the Frisbee. Then she spotted a pretty  butterfly.

She was so entranced with the butterfly that she followed it as it flitted from flower to flower.  She was so caught up with the movements of the pretty butterfly that she didn't notice that she was moving farther and farther away from the camp site.

When she did think to return to the site it was too late, for she realized that she was lost.

Mom! she called, Dad, help, I'm lost!  But she heard no one answer.  She began to trudge through the woods, hoping that she was going the right way to get back to her family.

But the more she walked the stranger her surroundings, and she grew fearful as the sky began to darken.
