Chapter 1
I walk into my house after a long day at work. The commissions from the three paintings I sold today should make a nice addition to my kid’s Christmas fund, but sometimes I wonder if the exhaustion is worth it. Pulling my phone out of my pocket, I frown as I glance at the missed call from an unknown number. It seems they have left a voicemail. I push the button to listen.
Hello, this message is for Maggie Anderson. My name is Greg Stanton, I’m a lawyer in Boise, Idaho. If you could call me back at your earliest convenience it would be greatly appreciated.
I put the phone and my purse down on the counter, wandering over to sit on the couch. I have no idea why a lawyer from Idaho would be calling me. As far as I know, I don’t even know anyone in Idaho.
The clock shows four in the afternoon, so I might still be able to catch the lawyer before he leaves the office for the day.
My heart pounds as I dial the number. I hope this isn’t some new phishing scheme and I’ve fallen right into their trap.
Stanton Law Offices, how may I direct your call?
I take a deep breath; this doesn’t seem like a scam. Hello, my name is Maggie Anderson. I received a message from a Mr. Stanton.
One moment please, Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Stanton has been waiting for your call.
The woman puts me on hold, and I begin tapping my foot as I wait for the lawyer to come on the line, wracking my brain about what this could be about.
Hello, Mrs. Anderson?
A calm, soothing voice flows through the phone, instantly making me relax. If being a lawyer doesn’t work out for this Mr. Stanton, he could narrate audiobooks. They are my guilty pleasure and I could listen to his voice all day long.
Yes, this is Maggie Anderson.
I’m afraid I’m calling with some sad news. Your father passed away yesterday morning after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
I cover my mouth with my hand, letting the tears flow down my cheeks. I knew that my father had been sick, but I never knew to what extent. This is not a phone call I was expecting to receive anytime soon.
I am no stranger to loss, having lost my husband to a sudden heart attack five years ago. I’m glad to have my adult children; they are all the family I have left now that my father has died.
"Mrs. Anderson, if you need to call back
