    Caleb's Protection - McKayla Schutt

    CHAPTER ONE

    Becca

Red eyes focused on Becca, sending a chill of fear through her blood. She’d been a vampire for a few years and still managed to make enemies in her new life. All because she had feelings for Stephan, the one who’d changed her into a vampire. The memory of that night flitted through her mind. He’d given her a freaking orgasm when he’d drained her body of blood. In front of the damn king! Becca rolled her shoulders, trying not to think about it.

Many vampires were standing in the lobby of the King and Queen, exchanging gossip and news quickly. Feeders hovered at the edges of the room, ready to serve until they were too drained to stand. Small rooms for seclusion were available since the act of drinking blood mostly aroused both parties. Becca had been trying her best to avoid Raven but the moment she walked out of the Queen’s office her eyes zoned in on Becca. Man, I really need to catch a break.

After months of wanting and needing Stephan, he’d marked Raven, binding them for life and officially making her the bad guy for getting in their way. She felt bad for not knowing, but at the same time, her newbie status should’ve been taken into account. Raven could at least give her a damn break.

Raven inched closer to Becca, but she pulled back and raced to the stairs and down two flights before stopping. Being on Raven’s bad side wasn’t the best thing for her.

She stood there for a good ten minutes before she was sure Raven wouldn’t give chase. She shoved her hands through her hair and debated on going back to Liam’s office to beg for another chance. I need something to do other than hang out in the damn tower. She didn’t exactly have family, as her parents had died when she turned eighteen. The elevator dinged and two of this floor’s family members strolled out, Becca couldn’t remember what house claimed this floor, so she used her vamp speed and zipped inside the elevator and hit the lobby button. But the doors stopped before they closed completely.

Becca, are you hiding again? Aloe Tibald asked in a musical voice before she zipped inside with Trisha Salzegeber at her side. The two women had helped Becca learn the rules of being a vampire and had trained her to drink without killing. And so much more. Don’t make me read your mind, Aloe threatened, and Becca sighed. Some vampires were able to read minds with ease, like Aloe and King Vampire Avery. Trisha rubbed Becca’s back.

Come on and talk to us. Trisha smiled. Is Raven being mean again?

I can’t be near her. She has this death glare, like I’m going to steal Stephan away. I screwed up, I get that, but damn. How long can she hold a grudge? Becca pressed her head against the wall. The two eyed each other before focusing on Becca. What?

She’s expecting, so she’s a bit more on edge now. It comes with the territory. Aloe filled in the blanks on why Raven had been so snappy lately. Fuck! She wanted to crawl into a hole during Raven’s pregnancy. Maybe then she wouldn’t feel threatened by Becca anymore.

Well, that makes sense, but I’ve apologized so many times. I don’t know what else to do. Becca reached for the buttons, but Trisha blocked her.

We have a meeting with someone in a minute, or we’d follow you down. Trisha gave Becca a half smile. But I’d give her some space, and if you do manage to find your true mate, I’m sure she’ll calm right down. Trisha hit the open button before walking out.

Thanks for that. With no idea of who my mate could be, that will be so easy. Becca resisted the urge to roll her eyes and Aloe giggled.

Sweet Becca, you’ll be just fine. I’m sure he’s somewhere in this tower. You should start looking. Trust your inner self. Aloe slid off the elevator after hitting the lobby button for Becca.

Thanks, Becca pushed out after the doors closed. The girls had always been way too optimistic, even though they didn’t have mates themselves. The elevator plummeted down, but her vampire body managed to stay upright with ease. It jerked to a stop, and she slipped out before a couple sauntered inside.

Instead of listening to Aloe’s advice and searching for a mate in every single male in the tower, she turned toward the stairs and bounced down the steps. She should be training to be part of the shadow squad. With the thought firmly in place, she finished the last set of stone steps. The walls reminded her of an old castle back in England, or something like that. The opening to the training floors had her pausing.

Other vampires practiced their moves, and to the far left was where she’d become a vampire. The memory filled her mind with Avery speaking first, You have a choice to make, Becca.

Then I wanna go home. She folded her hands in front of her chest as she pleaded, but he didn’t seem moved at all.

You can either become a vampire and leave your old life, or you can die a quick, painless death. His words shocked her to her core. She’d never pictured her life changing so much, all because her mind couldn’t be manipulated.

The color drained from Becca’s face. Her heart raced in her chest. I choose life then. She swallowed her fear, which started her new life as a member of the undead.

The memory faded away as Becca strolled to Liam’s office and some new trainees continued to work out on the floor. Ever since she became a member of the un-dead, she wanted to do something, anything, to give her life more meaning. After all, she was
