About this ebook

The Last Trial by Scott Turow: Conversation Starters

Critically acclaimed  author of several New York Times bestsellers, Scott Turow, has released his latest title, The Last Trial. The book sees the return of Alejandro 'Sandy' Stern, the celebrated lawyer from Turow’s debut novel, 'Presumed Innocent.' Turow, who is famous for writing  courtroom dramas with precision and detail like no other, engages  readers with his extensive legal adeptness and gripping exploration of the fragility of  human emotions with The Last Trial.

The book starts when Stern, who is now in his eighties and looking up to a peaceful retirement, was contacted by Dr. Kiril Pafko, a dear friend and esteemed cancer-researcher who is accused of murder and fraud. The story follows the twists and turns of this quandary and invites  readers to reevaluate their own judgement of what is right and wrong.

In the novel, Stern is an 85-year-old cancer survivor with multiple physical ailments. He is nearing retirement but decides to take on a legal battle for his long-time friend despite knowing that he might not survive given his old age. His friend turned client is Dr. Kiril Pafko, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist and respected cancer researcher. Their friendship spanning decades is bound by their shared experience of being immigrants from Argentina. Dr. Pafko is the co-founder of the research firm Pafko Therapeutics, which he runs with his son. They developed g-Livia, a new anti-cancer drug that promises to extend the lives of cancer patients with fatal prognosis. Its  initial testing phase produced unparalleled results. .
