    CHAPTER 1

    Tears of a Distant Past

A JOURNEY TO BE ENDURED, the measure of success, for Lisa Kimberly Bell who refused to settle for less. She  long made up her mind   to rise above the norm. To her environment, she would not conform. Born and raised in Brooklyn in the Brownsville section, far away from here was her intended direction.

New Lots Avenue and Mother Gaston Blvd., in the heart of Brownsville, where the Noble Drew Ali Projects corner hustlers chilled. Just another typical day living in the hood, however, Lisa was leaving and this time it was for good.

''So, you've  finally decided to go ahead and leave. Now who am I gonna get to help pick out my weaves.'' Jasmine jokingly asked, staring at her cousin as if she weren't gonna see her ever again.

''How many times I told you to leave them weaves alone. All that excess stuff botched up in the comb," Lisa smiled responding, sliding the minivan shut, having loaded it up with all her important stuff.

"Easy for you to say, Ms. Long Dark & Lovely, looking like you got some Indian in your family. Jasmine replied referring, to her bi-racial features. Her Latin/African genes sure knew how to treat her.

They laughed in conjunction which leads to Lisa saying, ''Girl if it weren't for you how would I have made it.''

For the past, few years Jasmine has held her down being one of the best hairdressers around. She always did her best to keep Lisa fly, aside from some of the other things she did to get by.

"See that's what I’m saying. Who’s gonna do your hair? Whenever you need it done Imma have to fly out there.''

Well you won’t have to worry about paying the fare, because I’ll be rolling in dough once I get up out of here. As a matter of fact, you may as well come too, I’m saying; look around what else is there to do. Lord knows you’ve had your share of setbacks and complications. Don’t you think it’s about time to change your situation? Every other day somebody end up dead, or hauled away in cuffs, locked up by the Feds.

Yeah, I feel you cuz, but where am I supposed to go, some corny town down south where everything is slow. It’s something about this shit that I can’t do without, I’d probably go insane tryna live down south. Jasmine said realizing she was not succeeding in stopping her best friend from packing up and leaving.

EVERY NOW AND THEN you need a change of pace. A different scenery a place you can escape.

Exactly, that’s just it, this is where I belong. How can you escape something you’ve been for so long? I live for the chase, it’s something about the high, I was born and raised here, and this is where I’ll die.

So, you mean to tell me you’ve never dreamed of getting away, perhaps moving somewhere, somewhere far away.

Nah cuz not me. She declined shaking her head, unable to conceive what Lisa had said. That’s my word I wish that I could fill your shoes, but this N.Y. state of mind got me stuck like glue. But on another note what’s up with you and D I heard he wound up coping out to a 5 to 15.

Yeah, Auntie told me, he called the other day.

So, what’d he have to say about you moving away?

Say, what could he say his ass isn’t even here, how’s he supposed to help raise Jr. from there? That goes to prove my point this isn’t no place to live for a single mother trying to raise a kid. Especially a boy with all that’s going on, look at all these losers on the corner all day long. Lisa snapped, directing their attention across the street standing in front the bodega about a dozen deep. Then she glanced back at the passenger seat, checking on Darren Jr. who was fast asleep.

Before Jasmine could respond to explain how she felt, Lisa continued on expressing herse1f.

Jr's. gonna think that all of that is cool, seeing it every-day while I’m back and forth to school. If his father was still out he'd be in that crowd, and that’s not the type of father that I want for my child. Lisa spoke her mind with empathic emphasis, she knew exactly what she wanted, and this certainly wasn’t it.

Damn cuz you cold, treating him like that. You just up and leaving not even looking back.

He’ll be alright this will give him time, so he can reflect, sit back and clear his mind. I warned him many times, but he refused to listen, now let’s see if all his hoes, step up and play position she then stated sternly, feeling somewhat defensive. Recalling all the times that Darren would go missing. Leaving her at home gone without a trace. Often times returning with guilt all on his face. Those late-night excursions that he never explained, because he blocked her out it brought about disdain. He kept her separated from the things he did, denying her love a man supposed to give. Payback is a mutha, the thought entered her mind. Which made it so easy to leave him behind.

Yo cuz I respect it. Although I disagree, this crazy life we live isn’t always what it seems. I’m not defending him I just see it differently D is a good man he’s just caught up like me. Genuinely stated Jasmine without saying too much, speaking up for her partner in sticking people up. She would line them up; he would take them down the majority of their victims resided across town. The secrets Darren kept were in fact out of love. He was not your average neighborhood thug.

Lisa didn’t want Jr. on that path and be forced to suffer the exact same wrath.

Still Jazz I’m sayin, this can’t be all to life. Just cause this is all we see that doesn’t make it right. There’s so much more to life, opportunity awaits, and we gotta take advantage before it is too late. Darren made his choices and now I’m making mine, except I’m making mines with the future in mind.

Cuz you know I love you and I wish you well. There’s no doubt in my mind that you will excel, and who better than you to reverse this ghetto tale.  Go on and do your thing, give them people hell. Jasmine encouraged, embracing Lisa tight. Knowing what she said was absolutely right. She knew eventually the streets would take its toll, however, when and where, was out of her control. Yo cuz do me a favor, whatever you do don’t change, don’t forget your family or from where you came. These are the things that make us who we are, whether we are close, or whether we are far.

Girl you make it seem like I’m moving to the moon. They have phones in Georgia it’s safe to assume. She humorously retorted, revealing a widespread smile. Then she added o saying, it’s only a few hundred miles. Yeah well it isn’t the same as living across the street, so keep those words in mind until next time we meet.

Girl you know you crazy but trust me I won’t forget. Lisa reiterated, giving her a hug and kiss. Breaking the embrace Jasmine kissed her hand, and then reached through the window tapping Darren Jr. on the head.

Lisa made her way to the driver’s side of the Town and Country and immediately hopped inside. Just as she pulled off, she beeped and waved goodbye, she knew that she would miss quite a few things about this environment.

Lisa wasn’t actually a project resident. Yet living across the street did have its imprint. There was always something that was going on. Fights, shootouts, and murders occurred on the regular.  As the future pulled her forward, the past held her back. She was caught up in the present, trying to stay on track. She felt she needed something to help her relax; she pulled a Mary J. C.D., out of the C.D. rack. As she slid it in, stopping at the light, the thought entered her mind that everything would be alright. She smiled to herself, preparing to proceed, which is what she did when the light turned green. She’d only made it halfway up the block, when all of a sudden; she heard a string of shots. Startled, she slowed down, compelled by the force. Even though she tried she just couldn’t shake the thought. Almost instantly, she felt a pain inside, yet at that moment she couldn’t figure why. Normally she wouldn’t show as much concern. No soon as she looked back her feelings were confirmed. Her smile disappeared, as her eyes took focus. Suddenly her body was stormed with emotion. Flushed, she couldn’t bare to hold back her tears, when she saw that Jasmine wasn’t standing there. The first thing she saw by the time she turned around was Jasmine bloody body sprawled out on the ground.  Instinctively, she threw
