About the Author
Agatha the Atrocious
Agatha stood in the smoky train station, next to her small black suitcase and the old, cranky maid. She carried a muslin bag with some sort of sandwich in it. She didn’t know what kind and didn’t care. Inside she felt like crying. Outside, she wouldn’t let them know. She didn’t want to be sent away to the country. She wasn’t afraid of any Jerrys.
She wanted to stay at home.
Agatha remembered last week at Cheltham, the boarding school, when the mean maths teacher, Ms. Belford, marched her out of the classroom and called her Agatha, the Atrocious. That was just before Agatha got sent home from boarding school. She hadn’t meant to hurt Melissa.
Agatha was just tired of being teased about how slow she ran. She’d just meant to wallop Melissa with her book bag. Not break the snooty girl’s nose.

The boy standing next to her was joking around with another boy and bumped her, almost knocking her over.
S’cuse me,
he said.
Agatha just glared at him.
The train pulled in just then. As soon as it was stopped and emptied, the maid pushed her onto it and handed Agatha
