    Silvi moved along the edge of the woods, smelling the rich, damp earth. Her bare feet and naked body slick from rain-drenched leaves. The ancient trees in this part of the forest hung heavy with moss.

    She breathed in the rotting leaf smell that told her leaves on the forest floor had decayed enough to provide food for this season’s growth. Summer was nearly here. A thrush called out with its kneep kneep song.

    She passed between the trees, touching the rough, smooth and furrowed bark of newly leafed out ash, rowan and hawthorn.

    It was the hawthorn she was looking for. This year, she would be the one to find the first thorn blossoms, the first to bring them to the center of Faerie.

    She would be May Queen this year. She had to.

    The elements were out of balance.

    Earth energy was waning in Faerie and in the world outside. A sylph had ruled Faerie for millennia and felt the waning begin. The sylph left the seat of power, hoping Faerie would renew herself.

    Niamh, a dryad like Silvi, was chosen as Luminary three years ago. Faerie had yet to begin her renewal. She drifted, still too full of air.
