    About the Author

    Sanctuary

Jana picked her way along the deer trail, pushing away the fir branches. The mountain was steeper here. She breathed in the cool air, trying to catch her breath. Her muscles ached from hours of climbing up the slope.

She needed to find a safe place before dark, which was coming soon. A cave would be good. Perching in a large tree might have to be good enough.

Yesterday, she’d heard voices. Two men talking. Which meant she wasn’t far enough away from other people.

It had been three nights since she’d left the village. With her brother dead, the protection he provided was gone.

The wilderness had seemed a safer bet than staying. There was nothing to hold her in the village now. And every reason to leave.

It didn’t matter that she was old, at least fifty. Maybe sixty, there had been never been any adults around to keep track of the years before she was ten. Old didn’t matter when women were scarce.

Before she left one of the other village women told Jana that at least two men had claimed her. Jana knew they’d come for her as soon as it was discovered her brother was dead.

So she ran, before Neil’s body was even cold.

Thumping noises ahead made her freeze. Someone was coming down the barely visible path. Jana quickly left the trail and sought cover behind the massive rootball of a downed tree. It was taller than she was.

She stood silently, looking for an escape route. There wasn’t a good one. She could go straight up the slope, but it would be a hard climb through the underbrush. And slow with her heavy pack.

Three deer came into sight. Rapidly moving down
