    Marcea led a double life. By evening an actress in local theater companies, by day, a working shaman and life coach. Her day job paid the rent between private clients and corporate consulting.

    Taking a deep breath, she adjusted the large crossbody bag and stepped out the backstage door. Her left hand in a pocket gripping the pepper spray, right hand holding keys. Cell phone tucked into the inner left breast coat pocket. Ready to grab if she needed it. Her nightly ritual of acting fierce and prepared.

    Marcea followed a few paces behind the group of the other actors crossing the street, the heavy boots she wore made her feel more powerful. They turned right, towards the Beacon Pub and Grill. She turned left towards the direction her Honda was parked.

    She had a premonition there would be at least a ten o’clock appointment in the morning on her voicemail. That meant that if she headed straight home there was a possibility of getting something resembling good sleep. It was now after eleven at night and the streets were mostly empty.

    She pulled the wool coat tight against her neck. The wind whipped her long dark hair around, lashing at the air. It smelled cold and salty, holding a threat of snow. September was unheard of for snow. It wasn’t even fall yet but the weather these days was crazy. She hoped the threat would vanish or at least hold off till Monday.

    There were still two more nights left in this run of Medea. Two sold-out nights, Saturday and Sunday. She
