CHAPTER ONE
H ave you heard of him ?
Sasha asked, sidling up to me at the counter. I was taking out the foam cups and getting it ready for the next batches of coffee. Fortis was a small town and we had a small set of loyal customers so I knew exactly what they would want on their way to work. I set down the foam cups, ready to make their to-go caffeine shots.
Who?
I asked distractedly.
The new guy!
Sasha exclaimed. Don’t tell me you live under a rock Sloane.
I rolled my eyes. Another guy you’re dating?
God, I wish,
Sasha said, quite dreamily. He’s smoking hot.
I raised my brow. We didn’t get enough of those in Fortis. But usually hot around her meant tall guys who didn’t sport pot bellies but their breath stank like cheap booze and stale, so pass!
Who is this he?
Sasha shrugged. Don’t know. I’ve been trying to dig things up. I spotted him around WalMart and no one seems to know who he is, except that he’s new to town.
Sasha the detective not finding any dirt on a person? Well this was news to me.
I turned to her. Tell me more.
Well, he’s
At that exact moment the bell above the door chimed, announcing a new customer.
At the same time, the coffee machine beeped with a fresh new batch of brew. Sasha moved away from me. Our boss Mr. Walter didn’t like us gossiping and sometimes he just dropped in unannounced. But it wasn’t him. By this time, his booming voice would be all over the place.
Excuse me,
a husky, male voice called out. I didn’t recognize this voice but it made goosebumps climb up my arm. I heard Sasha let out a big sigh behind me.
Yes?
I said as I turned around. I felt my mouth go dry at his sight.
On the other side of the counter, stood the most beautiful man I’d seen. He had dark hair and stunning blue eyes. His skin was dark and tanned and even though he wasn’t built like the truckers and the quarterbacks of our town, he was full of lean muscles. The veins under his arm rippled as he picked his hand up and held it there.
I blinked at it, confused. What now?
He wants to shake your hand Sloane,
Sasha practically hissed.
Huh,
I said. I swear I usually wasn’t this dumb but the sight of him had hit me like a 16-wheeler.
I do,
the guy said. He smiled at me.
Sloane, be nice to him. What’s wrong with you?
Sasha asked. But she was smirking. She already knew what was wrong with me. She gestured to the guy with her fingers as if me shaking his hand would somehow affect her chances with him.
I finally inched forward and took his hand in mine. His fingers were warm and callused and I felt a spark trickle down my arm at his touch. Oh my! I tried to move back from the touch but he held me fast, looking down at our entwined hands. He looked up and our eyes met and my whole body felt like it was on fire.
Could Sasha see what was happening to me? Was I actually on fire?
My name is Adrian,
he said, his voice lilted. It was so sexy to hear, like pure honey.
I’m Sloane—
I finally managed to blurt out. He took a step back and our eyes fell apart. I missed the contact—his contact—immediately.
Beautiful name,
he murmured. I laughed. I knew at least three Sloanes in this town. It wasn’t that my name was unique.
My parents hadn’t actually used even two brain-cells to come up with a good name. I cocked my head. Was he trying to flirt with me? That won’t make sense when a blonde goddess was standing right in front of him. Sasha batted her long eyelashes at him but his eyes never left my face.
Me? I was mousy haired and taller than most guys in the town. It wasn’t as if guys were lining up to date me. But then again Adrian wasn’t checking me out either. Just intently staring at my face. Not once did I see his gaze wander to any other parts when hello my bust was just a few inches south my face.
What brings you here?
Sasha asked, sidling up to me. This time he looked at her. Relieved that his attention was not on me any longer, I sighed and moved to the coffee machine. I had orders to make and my regulars would be walking in any moment now.
I started filling the cups with coffee and made lattes, black coffee with cinnamon and dairy-free chai tea. I had worked here in Walt’s for so long that I had practically memorized everyone’s orders. And these people tipped well which worked for me since I had to attend community college in the evening. Every bit of cash was important for me.
I’m new to town,
he said.
Oh?
Sasha asked.
She was fiddling with her hair, trying to bring his attention to every nice part of her body, which was literally everything. She was in peak flirt mode but Adrian was into none of it. He frowned instead before turning back to me. I’d been staring at him from the corner of my eye and swiftly looked down before he could catch me in the act. But I wasn’t fast enough. I could swear he smiled.
Who are all these coffees for?
Adrian asked.
Our customers. Sloane has OCD. She needs to get everything done before time,
Sasha explained.
I rolled my eyes. I loved Sasha but damn did she give my secrets away to total strangers. Even really cute ones.
I don’t see any customers yet,
Adrian said, giving me a confused look. That’s when I noticed his accent. No, not accent. The way he pronounced certain words like he was just getting used to them. He looked American enough in his J-Crew shirt and jeans that hugged him in all the right places. I frowned internally. Sure, he wasn’t from around here but was he from a different country all-together?
Just small-town things,
I said finally. I know they’ll come in before they leave for work.
See, this was how Fortis worked. We woke up, went through the same damn schedule, met the same damn people. Nothing had changed in the twenty-one years that I’d grown up in this town.
We were not exactly a hot spot for tourism in the American industry. In fact, more often than not, we even went ignored in some of our district handout pamphlets which were distributed nationwide to travel agencies. Who would come here anyway?
I see,
he said just as the first batch of customers walked in. Mrs. Morris and her gal pal group from the reading club. They were here at the café every day of the week, even on weekends. They giggled and pointed at Adrian as if they were a bunch of schoolgirls with crushes. I rolled my eyes at their behavior. Seems like even they weren’t immune of the looks of Adrian.
But wait, one of them was immune. Mrs. Newton was looking at him with a cold look on her face. She was the oldest one in the club and she was staring at Adrian as if she knew him, but it was worse than that. It was like she was upset with him being there. Why was that?
Ignoring her cold stare, I turned back to greet the bunch. Good morning ladies,
I said cheerily. Adrian put his hands in his jacket and moved away to make space for the ladies.
Good morning Sloane,
they said in a sing-song voice. They chattered away, taking their cups and then finding a big booth in the corner to sit in and discuss things. I turned back to find Adrian but he was nowhere in sight.
Where is he?
I asked Sasha.
Oh he left,
she said. Even she looks equally puzzled.
CHAPTER TWO
M aybe we turned him off somehow,
Sasha said. It was early evening and we were just about done with our shift. The two other girls Janice and Karen had taken over our places in the counter while we were changing out of our aprons. I had class in exactly half an hour but my community college campus was only a block down the road so I was in no rush.
He left, without ordering anything mind you and that’s the first thing you can think of? We turned him off?
I asked.
Sasha shrugged, nudging me with her shoulder. Maybe he realized what a weirdo you are.
Yeah right.
Girl, I saw how you were behaving around him. You think he’s cute too right?
Yeah well,
I admit. He’s not bad looking.
And a welcome change from looking at the beer-dozed blonde wannabe frat boys of Fortis.
Sasha gave me an all-knowing smirk. Miss. Sloane Richards thinking a guy is good-looking. Now where did the sun rise up from?
East,
I said sarcastically.
Sasha laughed. I loved her laugh. She was my oldest friend. We both met each other in kindergarten and kind of stuck together even though we couldn’t possibly be any more different. She was a guy magnet, and I was well—invisible.
Are you coming to that party Francis is throwing today?
Sasha asked.
Shoot, that’s today,
I lied. I remembered the party date of course. It was one of the very few parties I got invited to anyway. I have class today.
Can’t you not go?
she asked pouting.
I’m sorry. I love the class. I can’t miss it,
I said. It was true. I loved the Old Mythology class that Dr. Renee took and probably the only one out of my entire course that I actually enjoyed. Besides it was way better than going to a party anyway because all I would do was just stand at the corner and pretend to enjoy the bad music playing.
Nerd,
Sasha said. She was in the same community college as me. Well she used to be. She dropped out after two semesters while I was hell-bent on finishing the course and getting a job and a ticket out of the Fortis. It had nothing to offer me anymore.
Let me drop you at campus,
Sasha said. She wore her coat while I zipped up my hoodie.
Won’t say no to that,
I said grinning.
FORTIS GREW COLD AND silent the moment darkness fell over the town and it felt eerie to walk across the campus parking lot alone to get to the main building. I usually took my bike and parked it straight outside the building where the classes took place. But this time, I had to make a short detour through the parking lot. The campus wasn’t too big but the path felt longer. I could almost feel the darkness closing in on me.
I walked in the late September night, pulling the hoodie close to me.
There was a sharp thud to my left. I swung around but there was nothing. My heart beat fastened and I quickly increased my gait. In a town like Fortis, nothing bad happened but a woman walking alone should be careful, nevertheless. I was almost to the building again when that thudding sound came again, followed a by faint light from the top of the building and a hot gust of air.
The air was so strong that it nearly swept me off my feet. I fell down on the gravel, barely able to catch my balance. The mysterious light became fiercer and I closed my eyes against the brightness. It wasn’t a car, and it wasn’t a street lamp. And in a span of few seconds I went from feeling the cold rush into my hoodie to feeling so, so hot. The feeling stifled me.
And just as quickly as it had appeared, the light disappeared along with the hot air. I opened my eyes to the night sky. Only the single flickering lamppost greeted me. I was almost to the building. Without looking back once, I closed the last few feet of distance between me and the main door. But even in my haste, I swore I saw a faint light disappearing at the back of the building, leaving the silhouette of a man behind.
CHAPTER THREE
As soon as I ran through the oak door, I felt my breathing return somehow to normal. Inside the building was a totally different scenario with the hustle bustle of students hurrying along the corridor as they rushed to class.
Etine was the only community college in the radius of three towns so there was no dearth of students for the weekly night class. I had taken the morning classes for a few days but then had shifted to the night ones as the timing clashed with my shifts at the café.
It couldn’t be the other way round since the café mostly closed at eight. Everyone in Fortis was in bed before that time. I was shaken and still trying to make sense of what happened outside, and what I saw, that I bumped into my classmate, Julien.
Whoa Richards you okay?
he asked, steadying me.
Yeah,
I said but I still felt the fragments of heat from earlier, in my body.
You look so pale that I thought you saw a ghost or something.
I laughed but it came out shaky. Ha ha, no. I just ran fast I guess.
And I saw a weird light in the
