    DAY 1

God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them. (Genesis 1:27–28)

New Beginnings A New Year often means considering the good and the bad from the previous year and looking forward with expectancy and hope to a bright future in the year to come. Since the beginning of time, no one in all of existence could have had a brighter future than Adam and Eve, God’s first human representatives, created in His divine image. What a beginning. After all, this was the first day of the first year of human existence. It had to be a bright and sunny day in that garden of perfection. All of creation must have been singing in perfect harmony with man and God as the sun reflected a beautiful array of colors all around that garden and the fresh fragrance of a new creation filled the air, like that fresh scent after a rain. There was a perfect oneness that day as the pleasures of a pure paradise and the fullness of such majestic splendor lay ahead of God’s human representatives. Mankind, at that moment, was full of heavenly potential and unlimited possibilities. At the beginning of a New Year, like at the beginning of Creation, every child of God is full of heavenly potential and unlimited possibilities. Notice that before God gave His mission to man, He gave a special blessing to man. (Imagine how beautiful that first blessing upon man must have been.) It was a personal blessing, filled with the utmost love, care, and compassion. God blessed His crowning achievement before man embarked on the greatest journey in the entire universe: life. God was the initiator of this blessing upon man and therefore displays to us that it is God’s nature and His desire to bless man. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, so His nature and desire to bless man is the same today as it was that incredible day in the Garden of Eden. God wants to bless you this year, and you should see the gift of a new year as the gift of a new beginning from Him. A new year is like standing in the garden, looking at a new creation that lay ahead. Today is a beautiful day and a new chance to worship God as never before, a chance to see Him in a bright new light, a chance to see the wonder and majesty of our Creator through fresh eyes, a chance to serve Him as never before, and a chance to worship Him with garden simplicity this next year. What better way to start off your new year than to begin as creation began, with a blessing from our Creator! He knows us because He made us; therefore He is uniquely qualified to bestow a blessing of immeasurable depth upon His people. Before taking another step into the future of this year, stop and ask God to bless the days ahead with all the hope and promise and potential that awaited Adam and Eve, and pray that you may walk in a way that reflects the image of our Creator.

    DAY 2

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 1:1)

Roots That Run Deep When was the last time you opened your Bible, only to discover that your daily reading began something like this: Hezron begot Ram, and Ram begot Amminadab; Amminadab begot Nahshon, . . . and so on and so on? Then after a few minutes of struggling to pronounce names like Abiud (that’s uh-BI-ud in case you were wondering), you began asking yourself, What’s the point? Do I really need to know all these names? Does it matter who begot whom? Biblical genealogies are much more than tongue-twisting exercises in pronunciation. They serve a purpose, and here in Matthew’s Gospel, we have the most significant, most important, and most beautiful genealogy of all time recorded: the genealogy of our precious Messiah and King, Jesus Christ. If you were a Jew during the time of Christ, being able to prove your ancestry was not only important, but under certain circumstances, it also was essential. If you wanted to transfer land, you needed to know where the roots of your family tree went. If you wanted to serve in the temple, you had to be able to prove your priestly pedigree, and if you wanted to be king, you would have to prove your royal birthright—and it would have
