CHAPTER 1
IT WAS LATE IN AUGUST and Brianna pulled her little white compact car into Ann's driveway. Bri bounces up the sidewalk to the black and white two-story house. Bri didn't know why tonight felt different from any other Friday night but it did. She had a feeling that it was going to be a great night.
Hello!
Bri called out as she cracked the front door open.
Hey there, I’m in my room
Ann yelled back.
Brandy walked down the hall to Ann’s room. Hey, aren’t you ready? It's 8:45. Let’s get our party on!
Bri said with a giggle and little dance.
I just have to decide what to wear and I’m ready. See? My hair is done and so is my makeup.
Ann rolled her eyes.
Bri, was the complete opposite of Ann. Bri was short and petite, with long dark hair. Her complexion was dark, with big hazel eyes. Ann had the skin of a porcelain doll, big blue eyes, and very tall. Ann also had long Auburn hair that was naturally wavy. Bri’s hair was long, straight, and shiny.
I swear. You always run late. It drives me crazy.
Bri tried to make her voice light even though she was annoyed with her friend.
What’s the big hurry? It’s the same people and the same bar every Friday night.
I don’t know. It just feels different tonight and I just want to see what’s going to happen tonight.
Same as any other Friday night. You are going to meet some guy and get drunk.
Ann mumbled under her breath.
What?
Bri asked not really listening to Ann.
I just said where did you disappear last night after work?
Ann pulled out a pair of jeans and a light blue silk shirt.
That shirt will make your eyes pop with that color. Good choice. Anyway, Nic called me yesterday and wanted to have a drink at Down Under, so I meant him there. No big deal.
Bri tried to sound nonchalant.
Oh God, did he cry and beg you to come back to him again?
Ann asked.
No, I told him on the phone I didn’t want to hear any of it or I wouldn’t meet him and if he started it, I would leave.
Did he?
Amazingly he didn’t. I think the only reason he didn’t is that we got there and a friend of his was there and he didn’t want to look like an idiot.
Bri giggled. His friend on the other hand was hot. I don’t know what it was about him but I could feel some kind of chemistry cooking between us.
Really? What did he say?
Ann noticed the glow in her friend’s eye that she hadn’t ever seen.
Who?
Bri asked.
This friend of Nic’s. What’s his name?
Oh, His name is Drew. He didn’t really say anything, other than, Hi, nice to meet you. It’s the way he looked at me and the feeling I got.
Bri and Ann headed for the car. I’ll drive so you can drink. I have to work early in the morning, so I
m not planning on drinking." Ann said.
Oh good! I plan on drinking a lot.
Bri giggled.
Don’t you always?
Funny! Har har.
Bri rolled her eyes knowing it was true anyway.
CHAPTER 2
THE GIRLS ARRIVED AT the Club Confetti’s
. It was a small nightclub attached to a Holiday Inn. The night was rather cool for it being August in Missouri. Bri thought maybe fall would come early this year but doubted it. Bri felt invigorated and full of life tonight. She bounced in line waiting to get in the club.
Ann just laughed at her. She wondered how Bri could keep up her speed with the way Bri lived her life. She barely slept and went out almost every night. Ann did not have that kind of energy and one night a week was enough for Ann. She loved Bri but could not keep up with Bri’s pace.
The girls were paying the cover charge at the door. The sound of the band thumped out the door. Bri didn’t know who the band was but they sounded great and she was ready to start dancing.
Ann, the band sounds awesome.
Bri yelled over the music.
They do. Who are they?
I don’t know.
Bri craned her neck to see over the crowd of people and her mouth dropped open. Oh my God! Ann, it’s him! It’s him!
It’s who?
Ann looked at her friend confused.
Drew! The guy I met last night with Nic.
Really?
Ann felt a little disappointed cause she knew she was going to lose Bri’s attention for most of the night and she was going to be there till closing.
Well, folks, don’t forget to tip your bartenders and waitresses. We are going to take a short break and be back with more Rock-It-Science.
Drew said into the mic.
Should I go say hi? He probably doesn’t even remember me.
Bri said insecurely.
Well, if he doesn’t, he sure is headed straight to you.
Ann looked over Bri’s shoulder.
Do I look okay?
Bri asked with a huge smile on her face.
Bri turned around and just about collided into Drew’s chest.
Hey there.
Drew reached out to steady Bri.
Hi, what are you doing here?
Bri asked.
My band is playing here tonight. Where’s Nic?
Drew asked and Bri was disappointed cause she thought he was happy to see just her.
Nic? I don’t know. We aren’t a couple if that is what you think. We are just friends.
Bri stumbled with the words and felt foolish.
Oh well, in that case. Can I buy you a drink?
Drew gave her an ornery grin.
Uh-hum, would you like to introduce me to your friend.
Ann smiled up at Drew.
Oh yeah, Sorry Ann. Ann this is Drew. Drew this is Ann.
Drew shook Ann’s hand. Nice to meet you. If you’ll excuse me. I have to find the boy’s room and get a drink. What would you girls like to drink?
Jack and Coke, please.
Bri answered.
And for you, Ann?
Drew asked.
Oh, you don’t have too.
Of course, I do. If you’re a friend of this beautiful girl then it’s a must.
Drew said as he gave Bri a sideways hug.
White wine, please if you insist.
Ann and Bri giggled.
I’ll be right back.
Drew ran his hand across Bri’s back and she felt electricity run through her.
Oh God. I knew something was going to happen tonight. I told you I felt it.
Bri exclaimed once Drew was out of earshot.
Ann just smiled and nodded.
A few minutes later Drew was sitting down at a table with the girls.
I had no idea you were playing here tonight.
Bri said to Drew.
"Yeah, that’s why I was at Down Under last night. I dropped
