In 2015, Chanel Miller was in Palo Alto, California, living with her parents in their house. Her younger sister named Tiffany had driven three hours in a car for a long weekend that she intended to spend with her family. The two sisters then drove and picked up Tiffany's friend Julia, a Stanford student. Later in the evening, two more friends of Tiffany named Trea and Colleen arrived at Miller's place, and the four girls decided to go to the party at the Stanford campus, Kappa Alpha fraternity. Miller was initially not too keen to go to the party but then agreed upon the insistence of others to accompany them.

Stanford was a familiar place to Miller as she had grown up near the premises. She decided to have some fun at the party and return home safely with her sister.
