About this ebook
Bestselling author Ann Patchett offers another compelling read in The Dutch House, which takes readers into a man’s fascinating journey from abandonment to maturity and eventual forgiveness. Danny Conroy looks back on his childhood with memories marred by the bitterness of his past. The only saving grace in the darkness of his recollections is the constant and comforting presence of his older sister, Maeve, who takes on the role of mother to Danny after their own mother walked out on them. The siblings’ grandiose childhood home is a 1922 mansion in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia previously owned by a wealthy Dutch family. The Dutch house is both the witness and the object of Danny Conroy’s childhood miseries. Described by The Washington Post as a “subtle mystery, psychological page-turner,” Ann Patchett’s latest offering promises to be as enthralling as her other best selling works.

Introducing The Dutch House
Danny Conroy grew up in a lavish 1922 mansion in the suburbs outside Philadelphia. The grandiose estate was commissioned by the wealthy VanHoebeek family, who filled it with ornate furnishings and treasures from Europe, earning the nickname the Dutch house. After a successful investment turned Danny’s father, Cyril Conroy, into a real estate mogul, he purchased the house as a surprise for his wife, Elna, and their young daughter, Maeve. This extravagant backdrop, complete with devoted housekeeper and cook, is the entirety of young Danny’s childhood. However, the luxurious shift does not sit well with Elna and one day, when Danny was three and Maeve was ten, Elna abandoned her family to feed the poor in India. Elna’s absence left a gaping hole in little Danny’s life, which his workaholic father did not even try to make up for. The task of rearing and mothering Danny fell into the hands of Maeve, who embraced the role. The siblings became inseparable with an unbreakable
