Author

Dale T. Phillips

A lifelong student of mysteries, Maine, and the martial arts, Dale T. Phillips has combined all of these into the Zack Taylor series. His travels and background allow him to paint a compelling picture of a man with a mission, but one at odds with himself and his new environment. A longtime follower of mystery fiction, the author has crafted a hero in the mold of Travis McGee, Doc Ford, and John Cain, a moral man at heart who finds himself faced with difficult choices in a dangerous world. But Maine is different from the mean, big-city streets of New York, Boston, or L.A., and Zack must learn quickly if he is to survive. Dale studied writing with Stephen King, and has published over 70 short stories, non-fiction, and more. He has appeared on stage, television (including Jeopardy), and in an independent feature film. He co-wrote and acted in a short political satire film. He has traveled to all 50 states, Mexico, Canada, and through Europe. He can be found at www.daletphillips.com

CATHERINE STOOD ON the rocky beach, looking out over the expanse of gray-green ocean, but also keeping a wary eye on the man moving her way. She didn’t like being close to people. There were a few sightseers in the distance, so she felt no danger from the man, only annoyance at having her solitude disturbed.

The wind blew her hair every which way, another reason she liked being alone out here. Normally her hair covered the ugly facial scar, and she hated the reactions of strangers who caught sight of it.

The man was headed right towards her, so she turned to go. She had only gone a short distance before he came up, breathing hard. Had he run to catch up with me? Boy, was he going to be disappointed. She didn’t even bother turning away, as she usually did. Best to get this over with. Let him get a good look, and he wouldn’t be able to leave fast enough.

Instead, he astonished her. Hi there. My name’s Jared. I’ve seen you out here before.

She knew he’d seen the scar, but his gaze had moved on to the rest of her face. This was unprecedented. She didn’t know how to react.

Sorry to run after you, but I was afraid you’d leave before I could talk to you.

I have to go, she said.

Why? Are you afraid to talk to me?

Now she turned the scarred side away. What do you want?

Can’t we just talk, like two regular people?

    I’m not used to that.

But she had stayed, and talked, and found herself liking this tall, thin young man. She accepted his invitation for coffee, and noticed that he didn’t seem to get flustered or embarrassed for himself when other people stared at her. He treated her like she was a normal girl, and she liked that. A lot.

They met again, and again after that. He took her where she wanted to go, mostly away from other people, but also a few public places. He hadn’t asked her about the scar yet, which most people did. Another point in his favor.

When Catherine found out he was a photographer, she almost stopped the relationship. She didn’t like cameras, or mirrors. But it was so nice not to be alone anymore. She let her feelings develop. She let him take her to bed, though she insisted the lights stay off. Later, she told him about the accident which had claimed her parents and left her with a ruined face and psyche. Three weeks after that, he proposed to her, and she accepted.

Catherine fingered the slim gold band as they rode in the taxi. Married by a Justice of the Peace at City Hall, sure, but married just the same.

She smiled at Jared. Who’s this person we’re going to see?

The guy who can make things happen. I need a stake to get my business going.

You don’t want me along for that.

Yes, I do. You’re my lucky rabbit’s foot.

She smiled at the thought. How could a rabbit’s foot be lucky, if the rabbit hadn’t been able to keep it?

They were taken to a tall building with a huge marble lobby. They rode the elevator to the sixteenth floor, and sat waiting for half an hour. Then they were shown in to a large office, where a man in a suit stood looking out a window.

Have a seat, he said, and they did. He turned and crossed his arms. I’ve looked over your proposition. That’s a lot of money you’re asking for.

It’s a sure-fire investment. Jared was sitting forward in his chair. Catherine had never seen him so intense.

I wouldn’t put it that way. A photography business is risky, at best. And your history is, shall we say, a bit checkered. That was some bad shit in L.A.

That’s all in the past, said Jared, waving his hand in dismissal. I’m a married man now, settling down. I’m responsible.

The man in the suit looked at Catherine. So here she is.

Catherine touched Jared’s hand, a little afraid of the suited man, who seemed to know something about her.

I keep her out of the limelight, said Jared. But my work shows what I can do.

The man looked at them both. You’re really going all-in on this.

Jared said nothing, but Catherine felt him next to her almost vibrating with expectation.

Tell you what, said the man. I’ve got a little project down Mexico way, needs someone on the spot to do a shoot. You go down there, do a good job, prove you can handle it, we’ve got a deal.

BACK AT THE HOTEL, Jared was practically dancing for joy. We’ve got it, oh my God, I can’t believe it, we got it. He kissed Catherine. I told you that you were my lucky rabbit’s foot.

But won’t it be dangerous? Catherine couldn’t imagine the two of them driving in Mexico. He said the village was pretty remote. And you hear the news about all kinds of horrible things happening.

Not to worry, Jared said, waving his hand as if brushing away a fly. First, I speak pretty good Spanish. Second, we’ve got a guide to drive us.

Catherine looked at him and swallowed. So that will be our honeymoon?

Jared grinned and reached out to touch her face. She forced herself not to flinch. He’ll have a separate room, don’t worry. It’ll be fine. Trust me. You’re going to love it.

    What happened in L.A.?

Jared stiffened. What do you mean?

The man said something had happened there.

"Oh. Yeah. Well, I’d shoot celebrities and sell the pictures. Some of them didn’t like it, and there were a few times we got into scuffles. One day I was after a star, and she was trying to get away and
