Foreword
This was a long time coming. I wasn’t happy with my original ending. With the way the characters had changed, the ending no longer felt right, so I had to make some changed. I finally worked out an ending I was happy with and here it is. Well, part of it anyway.
Enjoy!
Prologue
Emperor Zavix studied himself in the mirror. He had aged well, at least in his opinion. He ran a hand through his short gray hair. It was nearly the color of his natural hair, so it was hard to tell it had even changed color. He smoothed the crow's feet at the side of his eyes and mouth with his fingertips, but they returned as soon as he moved his hand away. No matter. He still had his youthful complexion and women still found him attractive.
He had never chosen a mate, but he could have whatever woman he wanted, so he never felt the need for one. Now that he was emperor though, he would need an heir. He would have to start thinking about who he would choose. He sauntered across the room to his chaise lounge and stretched out, sighing as his body was cradled in the silky material.
Emperor Zavix,
he said softly. He liked the sound of that. Of course, he had always known he would take Drevin's place. They were alike in so many ways, and people respected him. His people. They sensed his magnificence and bent over backward to please him. It made him the perfect choice.
Zavix was mortified when he heard Drevin had been murdered by his own son. He knew Makari would come for him next, so he faked his own death.
