Chapter 1: The Quest for Success

How do we become happy, healthy and live a relatively financially secure life?

Are these too much to ask?

Do we have to trade one for another?

What conditions may exist for us to have a general state of well being?

Do we have to double our effort in our present job to become wealthy?

Do we have to leave our present job in order to increase our general well being?

Do the friends we keep hinder or help our quest for success?

Do we have to move away from our comfort zones in order to achieve these personal goals?

These may be some of the questions many of us often ask ourselves.

Wealth may be acquired by inheritance or it could be self-made. Some of us may have married into wealth. Inherited wealth often does not guarantee longevity, and in some instances may become an inherent problem. Those who remember the demise of The Marquess of Bristol in England who recklessly spent an estimated £7 million (US$22m) on drugs over a 10 year period will know some of the dangers of inherited wealth. It emerged in a trial in London in 1993 that he was forced to sell his family mansion in order to repay back loans. A family estate dating back to the 13th Century and can be traced back to the Saxons vanished within the lifetime of one unfortunate heir.

Inherited wealth may sometimes become inherited problem. The fact that we take on the good parts may mean that we also take on the bad, such as alcoholism, drug addiction etc.

Wealth is only a function of happiness. Wealth alone does not guarantee happiness and good health.

This book will suggest ways to live a rewarding and meaningful life.

    Chapter 2: A Turning Point

Some people only wake up in life after surviving some sort of shockwaves in their personal lives. These life- changing events may be the death of a loved one, divorce, surviving a fatal stroke or a serious motor accident, etc.

The writer’s personal shockwaves are two tragic events which changed his personal outlook of life: losing his dearest and beloved mother and having to look after his daughter, who was only eighteen months, on his own, after his wife was ordered by a court, upon their separation, not to return to the family home. The first event was inevitable but the second was truly destructive.

How do I cope with looking after a little girl of such tender age? How do I wake her up in the morning, bath her, brush her tiny teeth, feed her, dress her up and drive her to the nursery every weekday before going to work? Later, after work, pick her back from nursery, feed her, dress her for bed and tell her stories to rest her little mind. I have not done any of these before. How do I cut her tiny nails without chopping off her little fingers? I unwittingly found myself enjoying children’s TV programmes like Nuzzle and Scratch and Teletubbies. Well, our little princess is now almost eight years as I write the second edition of this book. She is still active and enjoys a full life with daddy and new step mother’s care and love.

After we have gone through these tribulations, we begin to truly discover our inner self.

Self-discovery is like tapping our inner resources.

Self-discovery is when we begin to listen more to our own silent moments.

What are your own life changing events?

Do you allow them to ruin your life?

Do you fall into depressive moods and let it control and destroy your life?

Or do you use it as a springboard to achieve greater heights in the meaning of your life?

Let me advise you– most successful people have become what they are simply because of these life-changing events.

One may be tempted to ask the primary purpose of these events?

Whilst we ponder about their intention, our inner mind will become busy at protecting itself when these events occur. Our subconscious mind has a major role to play after these events as it springs to life principally to protect itself from destruction. Our subconscious mind will always act in a manner to protect itself but in order to turn this event into productive outcome it must be naturally induced. Where we fail to turn the problem into positive results, the impact may often become destructive and we find ourselves turning to drug addiction, alcohol and other vices as a means of release. Because the reader needs to understand the way our subconscious mind work, a complete chapter has been included in the book.

So what exactly is the writer saying here?

Are these events really good for us?

Is the writer saying that these tragic events are beneficial to us?

The writer cannot provide a clear answer in the absence of empirical research on the subject but what is clear is that these events provide an opportunity for us to change our mindset…if you like… to switch the light bulb on…to get a move on…to listen to one’s own silent moments.

The writer’s suggestion is that these events present opportunities to see beyond the bad news and project one’s energy into positive forces.

    Chapter 3: Avoidable Dangers

Success does not come from being smart, educated or lucky. I am sure the reader will know some smart educated people who are struggling financially. In fact, some of the most successful people did not complete their education, Bill Gates did not complete his Harvard education and Henry Ford was not particularly educated. However, their lack of education did not hinder their success as they could afford to employ the best brains to achieve their aspirations. Success can be achieved by following established principles.

It is important to realise that success does not mean wealth alone. To achieve what may be referred to as "integrated success", we need to be relatively financially secure, healthy and happy in all aspect of our life.

However, it is unfortunate that many people place unusual burden on others on the concept of happiness.

It is inappropriate for us to suppose that our partner, our children, our car, our house, or other possessions can make us happy. Happiness from people and things do not generally stand the test of time. Happiness comes only from
