MAYGEE
A puppy is born, but is of mixed breed, so her future may be bleak. It is the will of the gods that the little girl finds a nice family to adopt her. The fates are further meddling in that a newborn baby in that family, Nancy, becomes in tune with the mental projections of the puppy. They become inseparable and as the two grow older can communicate over long distances: it is called meuning. Their dad, David, is a cop and both parents are computer literate. Dave and Susan recognize the strong bond between their kids. The puppy, Maygee, is treated like another child. Nancy and Maygee are also sensually connected: if one feels pain, the other likewise hurts. They also can sense badness in a person and prove it in identifying a child kidnapper. David likes to tinker and decides to build a toy for the kids. It is called a POOTER and developed with an oversized keyboard, one that Magee's large dog paws can actuate. The 'toy' develops into a serious learning tool that both kids become proficient in using. Susan becomes pregnant and has twins. Years elapse and the parents decide to have another child, but are warned off by both Nancy and Maygee, who have a strong feeling of disaster. After a checkup, it is confirmed that Susan can not risk another pregnancy. Time for the local fair and Nancy and Maygee organize a fortune telling booth. Towards the end of the day, they are approached by a bad guy who attempts to kidnap Nancy. Maygee finds David and the villain is apprehended just in the nick of time. Later our heroes suggest that David and Susan adopt a baby. The parents agree and after several visits to Social Services, discover a little girl, Annete by name. It turns out that Annete also has the psychic abilities attributed to Maygee and Nancy. The team is now up to three. As time passes, Annete, the brightest of the three, suggests that there might be others with the power. A search is organized and another being with powerful psychic abilities is discovered. And it is not a person, but another dog, named Sonny. He joins out troops and the score is now four. Months later, it is discovered that Sonny's mental blasts, when joined by the other three, can eliminate corrupt Web Pages, and the four begin doing exactly that. David finally catches them at it and worries that it could become lethal for the family if discovered, so the POOTER is confiscated. In one final adventure, Maygee's friend Regie, a miniature Schnauzer, and his owner get into trouble and are rescued by our heroes. Eventually calling themselves the Fourmeijibles, further adventures will be expounded upon in the next of the series.

    Maygee - William Carlyle

    CHAPTER 1

    The Start of All Things

They call me a dog. Actually I am a dog - kind of. I was born in a litter of 5 pups, the runt as they say. My dad was in and out when mom escaped from the back yard. I was told he was a Heinze 57, whatever that means. Mom was and still is a papered Cocker Spaniel with bloodlines that go way back. Way way back, I am told. But pops being a Heinze, put us pups headed for the pound. If we were lucky. I have heard rumors that litters are sometimes tossed into a paper bag and left on the side of a country road. That doesn't sound very good at all.

Anyway, I guess we were very lucky. My mom's masters were good people and knew the consequences of puppies being sent to the pound. Something that they called 'the odds' were poor. Just as our eyes were opening and the other senses began to respond, we started hearing the name Craigslist frequently. Suddenly, strange people started showing up. Handling us, some not so gently. My brothers and sisters found new masters and were taken away. I never saw them again. Being the smallest, I remained with Mom. For a while. When you are starting out in life, there is no plan, except a warm meal and a cozy bed. So I waited and waited. And waited some more. I didn't even know what 'future' meant.

    CHAPTER 2

    NANCY

Finally it happened. A nice couple 'adopted' me. And that should be the end of this story. But it is not. In fact there is no ending to this narrative. We still live. Back to the nice couple, Dave and Susan. They had been together for almost a year and Susan was as pregnant as you can get. A couple of days after I entered their lives, Susan was rushed to the hospital. I had no idea what was happening, but chaos reigned in the household. Several more days passed and Susan returned home - with another puppy. Well, not exactly. Wasn't sure what to call it, but it was fur-less and pink. Smelled funny, too. It wriggled and squirmed and made all sorts of sounds. Dave tended to Susan and I was ignored. For my part, I had begun to get around on all fours pretty well. With the spotlight on Susan and her puppy, I just lay in the corner: not happily, I might add.

About a week went by and things began to settle down. Susan's 'puppy' was the star: no doubt there. And curiosity began to swell in my tiny brain. There was also something new invading my mind. A shadow in the background, not malign, just reaching. It took a little while to realize that I was receiving emanations from Susan's 'puppy'. These were not organized ideas, just swirls of smoke that would start to solidify and then dissipate. It also became evident that these 'brainwaves' became stronger the closer I came to the 'puppy'.

About this time, I figured out that this was a human child and had a name: Nancy Pauline Jenson. Over the next several weeks I began to 'tune in' to Nancy's thoughts: not in color or description, but to sensual feelings. Warm body = Susan. Firm grip = Dave. Sunlight = daytime. Breeze = outside. And one other. When Nancy looked at me, I would feel a warm glow like a smile in my mind.

Within a month, we were 'connected'. I still didn't know how to define our tie. Suffice to say, if Nancy sees a butterfly, so do I. If Nancy stubs her toe, I feel the same pain as she does. And it also works in reverse. In the future we will call it muening, but for the moment it defies description.

As this epic chronicle progresses, you will find me referring to other members of the Jenson family as if I were a human person. And in certain ways, I am a child. And Dave and Susan are my parents. They have also cared for me in much the way they treated Nancy: my sister as it were. I just looked like a dog. If that's not confusing enough, just wait.

    CHAPTER 3

    THE CONNECTION

I started barking at an early age: this created a big problem for a little while. Whenever I barked, Nancy would do a baby bark: not exactly the same, but close enough to be quite annoying to our folks. It took a bit of time, but we finally worked out the finer points. When either she or I did something physical (like barking), the receiving end could automatically block the act mentally if we chose.

There was no rule book to our psychic connection, so we had to play it by ear. And it was not always one hundred percent effective. One morning, Dave tripped over me, stepping on my paw in the process. It really hurt. I yelped and transferred that pain to Nancy and she started howling up a storm. Dave and Susan thought she was dying and whisked her off to the hospital. The doctors found nothing wrong: she appeared to be in perfect health.

That was when I discovered that distance had only minor effect on our mind melding: I could feel the nurses and doctors prodding Nancy's body and poking things in all sorts of places. After the check up, Susan and Dave returned with Nancy to the house and everything went back to normal: almost. But the episode got them to thinking, Was it possible for a link to exist between the dog (that's me) and their little girl (that's Nancy)?

After a bit, it became evident to
