Guitar for Beginners - Guitar Lover
Introduction
Coming into possession of an instrument always feels strange. After all, you hear them being played every day, how hard could it be? If you’ve bought this book, that means you’ve got your hands on a guitar. Whether this was a gift from a friend, or you bought it to woo people, you’d probably like to play it. The guitar is one of the most alluring instruments out there. This is mostly because well, who doesn’t want to sound like their favorite Rockstar? Well, if you’ve tried playing with it, you’ll have found it doesn’t always make you sound like that.
Your next resort would be to look online for resources to learn. After all, it’s impossible for the internet to not have enough resources for you to learn a single instrument, right? Well, while the internet does host a myriad of different guitar-learning resources, they’re quite scattered. If what you need is a simple guide you can just pick up, follow, and learn to play the guitar, then you’ve come to the right place.
By now you might be wondering, who even am I? After all, to speak with such confidence, it would only be fitting for me to have at least some authority on the topic. Well, I’m currently working as a metal band instructor, teaching aspiring metal guitarists how to take their playing to the next level. I’ve also worked as a teacher, flamenco instructor… you get the gist, I teach people how to play guitar. The most troublesome thing for my students in the past has been rather shocking. You would think the lead guitarist of a popular metal band would know how to hold his guitar properly! The basics are something that, if you skim over them, I’ll be seeing you 10 years from now when the mistakes have caught up for you.
Most importantly- I’m a self-taught guitarist.
The basics are also often skimmed online, with content creators mostly opting to either take the ‘showman’ route and skip the basics completely, or they emulate a music school and spend too much time on theory.
So, you might be wondering, what do you get from this book that you don’t get from going to music school? Actually, nothing. If you went to music school, paid for lessons, and spent a few years of your life, you would learn everything that you would in this book, which you’ve already paid for and that will take you maybe a week to absorb.
With that being said, there is something that music school does better than me (other than taking your money) And that is theory. If your idea of having fun playing the guitar is sitting at a desk and looking at someone that hasn’t touched an instrument in years teach you theory, knock yourself out.
On the other hand, if you want to take that guitar into your hands, and learn to shred like a true Rockstar, you’ve come to the right place. I am a firm believer of practice as a method of teaching. Because of that, this book will only teach you the theory you have to know and skip over the parts that aren’t exactly crucial to your career as a guitarist.
With me having said all that, I can see how you would be a tad skeptical. After all, I’m expecting you to make a ton of progress in what, 7 days? What can you really do in that amount of time?
Turns out, if you put your heart and soul into it- a lot. I used to teach a guitar class which teaches pretty much this material in a week’s time. It was what kickstarted my career, as it got much more popular than I’d anticipated. Turns out people want to make progress playing, not learn theory. Who knew?
But hey, don’t take my word for it:
The guitar has been a lifelong dream to me. I was born poor, so I never had the chance to attend a school. I was quite uncertain about joining this class to be perfectly honest. After all, it was a significant chunk of my savings at the time. After I went through it, I was really satisfied with what James had taught me!
Jeff, 28
This class didn’t just teach me guitar. James is an excellent guitarist, and he teaches even better. I’ve learned some of the basics, and more importantly, I’ve learned where to go now!
Tea, 18
Usually, my students are surprised at the progress that they are making. Music school tries to drill into your head this idea that you need several years to become proficient at playing the guitar. Well, I’m here to tell you that that’s utterly untrue. While sure, you won’t be playing for Slayer after a month, a week is more than enough to impress your friends at the party.
I’ll sound a bit cheesy, but learning the guitar is quite like learning a foreign language. You can sit in a class for years, and do it technically correctly, or you can go there and immerse yourself. You won’t be learning the theory behind the guitar; you’ll be learning how to really play.
If you’re still skeptical, let me make a bet with you. No, let me promise you something. In these next seven days, you’ll learn to play your first proper song, as long as you follow my steps outlined here.
I’ve written this book with beginners in mind. I won’t be going over advanced theory, nor will I go into the in-depth history of the instrument as school would. All I want to do is teach you to play. The moment you can pick up a guitar and jam with yourself is the moment where I’m satisfied with all I’ve
