Learn to Play Guitar - E. Kluitenberg
Congratulations!
You have decided to start playing guitar, or you’ve already started! Once you’ve got the hang of it you won’t regret it.
Thank you for choosing our extensive textbook and reference work. We’ll do everything we can to help you with the first steps to becoming a super guitarist.
Did you know by learning only three chords you can play a song? Being able to play an instrument is something wonderful. You can put your thoughts, feelings, and emotions into music. Once you’ve learned how to play you’ll never forget it. So how about it? Let’s begin?
We’re starting with all the basics of the guitar and guitar music. Did you know many people plan to play guitar but don’t get much further than buying the guitar? In many cases this is because they bought the wrong guitar, which doesn’t suit them. We’ll give an extensive overview of what to look for when buying a guitar. We’ll also give you inside information on how resellers try to sell you a guitar and what to look for so you don’t go home with the wrong guitar.
In this book you’ll find all relevant information about playing the guitar. You’ll find a complete overview of the most used chords, blues diagrams and diagrams on playing solo. All shown in a simple fashion, so you can start playing without needing knowledge up front or being able to read notes.
The Parts of the guitar
On the next page you’ll find an overview of all the parts of a guitar. Believe it or not, these parts together can produce the beautiful sound from your guitar. We specifically say can produce, naturally we assume you’re going to play out of your skin, but if these parts aren’t adjusted well to each other the sound of the guitar will be influenced. So let’s dive into what these parts are and what they do.
––––––––
The Head of the guitar
This ensures the strings are on tension and stay that way using tuning pegs.
––––––––
––––––––
The Neck of the guitar
This ensures the strings cover the distance from the bridge to the head. To form a sound we need a certain length. On the neck of the guitar you’ll find frets and the fretboard. By pressing the fret (you press the string on the fret) the string length shortens, and if you strum the string the pitch rises from strumming when not pressing a string.
––––––––
The Body of the guitar
Contains the soundboard with the sound hole for amplifying the sound. The sound is transferred from the strings through the bridge to the soundboard.
These guitar parts are important to look out for when buying a guitar. To get an extensive overview on what to look for when buying a guitar see the Extra
section of this book.

Electric and Acoustic
We can roughly make a distinction between two guitars; the electric guitar and the acoustic guitar. The electric guitar differs from the acoustic guitar on a few points. The biggest difference is the electric guitar doesn’t have a soundboard. The string vibration is converted into electrical signals using electric pickups (elements). This signal is passed on to a guitar amplifier that converts the signal into sound. This makes the electric guitar suitable for transforming sound which makes it ideal for multiple music genres like rock, blues or metal.
An electric guitar usually has between one and three elements. These elements all have their own characteristics and location on the body of the guitar. This way they convert the vibrations of the strings in their own unique way and they all have their own sound. One element sounds louder, another may produce higher or lower sounds. Using the selector switch you can select which element you want to use, or select a combination of elements. Additionally you can find volume and tone controls on an electric guitar. In short; an electric guitar provides many options for setting up your own sound.
There are many different types of electric guitars, and they all have their own shape, types of elements, neck, and type of wood they’re made from. Later we’ll show you the most used types of guitars. We’ll also tell you which type is most suited for you. No two guitars are the same.
––––––––
Because guitars are partly handmade from natural resources, wood, each guitar is unique. Every single piece of wood is unique. That’s why two guitars that look exactly the same can produce different sounds, and that’s what makes the guitar such a fascinating instrument!

Basic necessities
To get a head start it’s important to know what you need to start learning to play the guitar. We’ll give you a quick overview divided into necessary and optional items.
––––––––
Basics
Guitar
Really?! Yes, to play the guitar you actually need a guitar. Though many people are masters in playing the air guitar, we dare say a real guitar can produce a much better sound. It’s important to pay attention to which guitar you’re buying. A guitar has many parts which together determine if your instrument is easily playable and if it’s right for you. Take a look at the last chapter of this book for an extensive overview of tips on what to look for when buying a guitar (new or used).
––––––––
Tuner
Even though you can tune your guitar using an app on your computer or mobile we advise you to buy a clip-on tuner. This easily attaches to the head of your guitar and allows you to tune your guitar without losing the freedom of movement. (Our mobile with tuning app always slides off our knee).
––––––––
Picks
Small investment but very handy when it comes to playing chords. By strumming the pick across the strings you get a clear chord sound. Additionally you can use a pick for plucking a string.
