    Introduction

    What is depression and what are its psychological mechanisms of functioning? What are the symptoms of mood disorders? How do they affect people's lives?

    This guide aims to introduce the reader on a voyage of discovery on the subject, trying to convey the currently available scientific knowledge about depression and mood disorders in a simple, but not simplistic way. The aim is therefore to offer a tool for knowledge about serious mood disorders, creating the basis for building a solid theoretical foundation on the subject.

    In order to achieve this goal we will first of all start from a definition of mood, which will help us to understand how to distinguish physiological and normative situations from problematic ones. We will then examine the main known disorders in psychopathology related to this issue.

    In particular, we will address:

    the major depressive disorder;

    the dysthymic disorder;
