The vehicle bounces over the rough dirt track that Kayla laughingly refered to as a ‘road’. Arin keeps a tight hold on the jeep’s interior, terrified that each sudden jolt might be the one that finally sends him flying out of the open-top vehicle and into the endless expanse of jungle beyond. He glances at the beautiful twenty-year-old woman in the seat next to him. She’s grinning like this is the best adventure of her life. Maybe that’s true. The darkest jungles of Africa are thousands of miles away from the dense urban sprawl of their college life back in California. Debbi flashes Arin a big smile, her body rocking up and down as the jeep rolls along the muddy track. She’s enjoying this way more than he is – as she should. After all, she was the one who wanted to come out here over the summer and volunteer with local relief efforts.

Arin glances at his watch, but it’s still set to his home time. He looks up through the open roof, trying to guess the time using the sky or the sun, but that is impossible. Thick jungle surrounds the uneven dirt track on all sides, the canopies blocking out almost all light. It could be midday or midnight; Arin has no idea. He knows it’s definitely getting late. The sun was setting as their rickety old plane thumped down onto the bare patch of land the locals called a ‘runway’.

The heat is oppressive. Arin wishes that he had stopped to change his jeans for lighter pants. Sweat trickles down his back in spite of the air rushing over his face.
