Found a Real One 2 - Mo Howard

Chapter One

When Jada got off the phone with the detective, she couldn’t believe what she’d just heard. She called Omare’s cell phone hoping that he was playing some evil joke, but his phone went to voicemail. She called three more times before realizing he wasn’t going to answer. The phone call she received was real. She wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn’t come. Her body was in a complete state of shock.

Hey, Jada. Are you coming back to the meeting? Amber just came up with a great idea, one of her team members said, which brought her back to reality.

Yeah. I’m coming, Jada said as she slowly stood up.

Are you okay?

I’m good. Just had to handle some personal matters, Jada lied. When she entered the room, she felt like she like she was in a daze. She listened to Amber’s idea and helped the team complete their project. At 5pm, she didn’t know how she made it through the day, but she was glad it was over. She went to her office and called Omare again, hoping that he would answer. Again, his phone went directly to voicemail.

You working late? Brittany asked from the doorway of Jada’s office.

No, I’m not feeling well. Just moving a little slow.

Okay, boo. Well, I have to get out of here. I hope you had a good first day in your new role. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Okay, girl, have a good night.

When Brittany left, Jada packed up her things, but she still felt like she was moving on auto pilot. When she got to her car, she called her mother.

Hey, Jada. How was your day? Dianna asked.

Omare got arrested.

What? For what? Dianna asked in a concerned voice.

I’m not sure. He called and then I spoke to an FBI agent and he has a court hearing downtown at the federal building.

The FBI? I knew he was trouble when I first met him.

Are you serious right now?

Yes. You don’t need to get caught up with a man like that. I know you think you love him, but you need to let him go. Your father and I did not raise you t—

Jada disconnected the phone. She couldn’t believe her mother thought it was okay to tell her to leave the love of her life. She wasn’t trying to hear that shit. She needed support. She decided to call his mother.

Hey, Jada. How are you doing sweetie?

Shit, she doesn’t even know, Jada thought to herself. Omare called me. He’s been arrested.

What?

He was arrested by the FBI and he has a hearing tomorrow.

FUCK! Mary cursed. Meet me at my house, Jada. I’m leaving the restaurant now; I’ll see you soon.

Okay, Jada said as she tried not to cry. The reality of what happened was starting to hit her.

He’s going to be okay, Jada, so don’t cry. I’ll see you soon, Mary said, before disconnecting the phone call.

Jada heard what Mary said but her heart wasn’t listening. When she put her phone in the cup holder, tears started to fall. She started her car and put it in drive. Mary stayed in the West End so it was going to take Jada at least an hour and a half to get there. As she drove, her mother called her back multiple times but Jada ignored each call. When her father called, she answered.

Hello. She answered the phone sounding like she was drowning in despair.

I’m so sorry to hear about Omare, he said in a compassionate tone.

Jada didn’t say anything. She didn’t know what to say.

Whenever you need to talk, call me. You know how your mother can get. She’s not the most empathetic person.

I know, Jada said through tears.

Don’t let her get to you. When you talk to him, tell him to keep his head up.

I will.

And you’re going to be okay. Just pray and ask God to guide y’all through this.

I will.

Okay. I love you and call me whenever you need me, Harvey said with sincerity in his voice.

I love you too, Jada said before she disconnected the call. She drove to Ms. Mary’s place and her mind was heavy with everything that her dad had just said. When she arrived at Ms. Mary’s, Mary aka Momma was sitting on the porch. As Jada pulled into her driveway, she got up and came towards the car. Jada and Mary had become very close since she was dating her son. They would go out for dinner and movie dates and they enjoyed spending time together.

Awe, baby. Are you okay? Mary asked while Jada exited the car. It was clear that they’d both been crying.

Momma, I just don’t know what to do. How did this happen? Jada asked as she allowed herself to break down.

I don’t know, but Omare is going to be okay. He’s a strong man.

I know, but it’s not fair. Why does all this shit keep happening to me? He was supposed to go and come back, now I don’t even know when he’s coming home, Jada cried.

Come on in the house, Jada. Let me make you some tea, Mary said while wrapping her arm around Jada’s shoulder. Mary had experienced her fair share of heartaches so she knew that Jada needed to feel loved. She led her inside and sat her on the sofa where Jada wept silently. When the tea was done, Mary brought it to her. She set it on the coffee table that was in front of them so it could cool down. So what did he say when he called?

He said that he had been arrested and he gave the phone to an FBI agent that said he had a court date tomorrow at the federal building on Spring Street.

Okay. So I’ll take off of work and go to that, Mary said.

I’m going to go too. I have to see him, Jada stated through tears.

Well, go ahead and email your boss. I know they’re tired of your ass at work. After you take tomorrow off, you can’t take off any more days, Mary said while laughing. Jada let a small laugh escape as well because she knew that Mary was right. Mr. Lachiewicz wasn’t going to be pleased that Jada was taking another day off, but she had to see Omare.

Jada’s phone started to ring and when she looked at the number. She didn’t recognize it, but she picked it up anyway.

You have a collect call from an inmate at Robert A. Deyton Detention Facility. If you would like to accept the call dial 1, to reject the call dial 2 or hang up now, the operator said. Jada quickly pressed 1. Her heart was beating fast and she couldn’t wait to hear Omare’s voice.

Hello.

Hey, baby. Omare’s baritone boomed over the loud background.

Omare, are you okay? What happened?

Tell him I said hey, Ms. Mary chimed in. Jada put Omare on speakerphone.

I’m at your mom’s and we have you on speakerphone, Jada said.

Hey, Ma. I love you, don’t worry about nothing I’ll be home soon.

I know, son. Just be careful. I’ll be praying.

I know. This shit is crazy. I was supposed to leave for Alabama at 9am, but I didn’t end up leaving until 11am. So I’m a couple of miles away from Alabama and I got pulled over for speeding. The officer ran my license and I thought everything was going to be cool. It took him a while to come back, so I was just chilling. About 10 minutes later, four other police cars appeared and they got out the car with their guns. I thought they were coming to kill me. They came over to my car with their guns pointed and told me to get out the car and that I had a federal arrest warrant in the system. I got out calmly and they arrested me. They told me I have a court date tomorrow and they’ll probably be going back to Texas after that.

So what is the warrant for? Jada asked. None of this was making sense to her.

Some shit I did when I was younger.

Omare, what did you do? Jada asked. She wanted to know what she was getting herself into. She told them when they first met that she wanted to know what he was involved in.

I robbed a store with some guys. They got caught and I didn’t so I moved to Atlanta after that.

What the fuck? Jada blurted out before she could help herself. You didn’t move to Atlanta, you ran. You’re on the run, Jada said.

Yes and no. I left because I wanted a chance to live a better life. I’ve been doing good since I’ve been in Atlanta, so I didn’t think I would have to deal with that shit.

Omare, what kind of dumb sh— Jada couldn’t finish her sentence because the call had been disconnected.

I know he didn’t hang up on me, Jada said. She was fuming with anger.

No, he only has a certain amount of time to talk. He’ll probably call you back later.

But I didn’t even get to go in and did you know about his situation? Jada asked.

I’m his mother, Jada, I know about everything, and if you’re going to be with Omare, you’ll have to get used to being hung up on in the middle of a conversation.

So you knew that he was involved in a robbery and it didn’t bother you? Jada asked. Her voice was laced with judgement and confusion.

Omare is a grown ass man. He made the choice to run from the consequences of his actions, so now he has to deal with him. As a mother, you won’t always like or agree with what your children do, but that doesn’t mean you love them any less.

But, if he’s on the run, how was he able to buy all the things he has. How could he open a restaurant and buy a home? Jada wondered.

Everything is in my name, Mary explained.

So he’s been lying to me this whole time. I can’t believe this shit. I trusted him and this whole time I’ve been loving a fucking fugitive.

So that’s how you feel about him? Mary asked. She knew Jada loved her son and was trying to process the information she was hearing, but she wouldn’t let her disrespect him. She wouldn’t let anyone disrespect him.

Yeah. I feel like I’ve been lied to and that he made me fall in love with him, even though he knew he had some shit going on.

So he put a gun to your head and made you love him, and now that he’s in trouble you can’t love him? Now that you know the truth about him, the game has changed?

I still love him. I just feel manipulated. He should have let me decide if I wanted to deal with his situation.

I understand what you’re saying and I agree. I don’t know why he didn’t tell you; it could have been to protect you, but I don’t know. What I do know is that true love doesn’t run when things get tough. When you love someone, you’re willing to take the good with the bad, Mary said before getting up and taking Jada’s teacup to the kitchen.

Jada thought about what Mary said. She knew she loved Omare with all her heart, but she couldn’t act like she wasn’t disappointed in him. She was hurt that he didn’t tell her about his situation and she was hurt by the fact that he wasn’t going to be at home when she went home.

Momma, can I stay here tonight? Jada asked. She could feel herself getting dizzy and she wanted to lay down.

Yeah, go to the guest room. I went ahead and fixed it for you when you called earlier. I figured you wouldn’t want to sleep at his house tonight.

Jada got up and walked to the guest room. There was a picture of Omare on the dresser and she grabbed it before stepping out of her shoes and getting into bed. Even though she was mad at him, she smiled while looking at Omare’s picture. Her cheeks started to get wet from the tears that she didn’t even realize were falling.

At 9:30pm, Jada was awakened by a call from another unknown number. She quickly answered and listened to the automated message. After she pressed one, the line clicked in.

Hello.

Baby, please don’t be mad at me, Omare said. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about my past. I didn’t want to scare you and I hoped that it would never catch up to me. I know I was being selfish, but I didn’t want to lose you.

I know, baby. I get it. I talked to your mom, and even though I don’t agree with how you handled the situation, I still love you.

I love you too, Jada, more than anything in the world, Omare said. He meant every word he said and he hoped that Jada believed him.

I know. We’ll get through this. So what do I need to do? Jada asked.

"Just be here for me. That’s all I need you to do. My mom already called my lawyer so that shit is taken care of. You can call Tre and let him know what’s up. Tell him to get in contact with Rico and explain to him what happened. Also, tell him to hold
