    Devious Friends - B.M. Thoresson

    Chapter 1

Mike knew he had to reach the light and felt something pulling him towards it. He opened his eyes and found himself lying in a hospital bed.

The Nurse was busy doing her last rounds for the shift. She would be going off duty in one hours’ time. She was taking blood pressure and checking on the patients in the I.C.U.

She was standing next to Mike’s bed when she saw him open his eyes. At first she thought it was her imagination, but no, there it was again, Mike was opening his eyes.

Mr Michaelson, can you hear me? She asked.

Mike opened his eyes and lay there looking at the ceiling.

The machines connected to Mike suddenly all started sounding bells and other alarm systems.

The Nurse again asked, Mr Michaelson, can you hear me?

Mike turned his head to look at her and replied.

Yes I can hear you, where am I? He asked.

The Nurse looked at the gauges and ignoring him for a second, called down the hall to other staff to come help her.

The doctor on duty and the other staff all came bundling through the entrance.

The doctor stood over Mike and taking his hand felt to see if the pulse was ok. Mike repeated his question, Where am I? He wanted to know.

The doctor put down his stethoscope and standing next to Mike answered.

‘Mister Michaelson, you are in the General Hospital in Zürich, you were caught in an avalanche some months ago and brought to the hospital." The doctor informed Mike.

Mike looked at him in disbelief and repeated what the doctor just said and asked, Are you sure?

Yes almost a year ago. The doctor repeated.

The doctor then started examining Mike to see how he was responding to the machines that he was coupled to.

Mike just lay there, trying to work out what had happened. Had he been dreaming? Was the whole thing with Morg just in his mind?

    His thoughts were interrupted.

You were skiing up in the mountains when an avalanche overtook you from behind. It buried most of the valley, and you were lucky that another skier was standing further up the slope and saw you go down. The doctor said.

You must please just take it easy for a few minutes. I want to run some tests on you. The doctor told Mike.

Once I have conducted the tests, I will have someone who is familiar with your case come talk to you. He said.

Judge Pringle was notified immediately that Mike had regained consciousness, and he was the only one allowed to see Mike.

So Mike laid there feeling quite well, he had no pain anywhere and decided to wait until the doctor had called other members of the staff to inform him what has happened.

The doctor called the nurse and so that Mike could not hear him, gave her instructions. I want you to make as if you are cleaning up and remove the mirror next to his bed, no questions, just remove it. The doctor said.

Mike lay there while one machine after another was connected up to his body and all types of tests were being run.

At the end of the tests the doctor turned to Mike.

Mike, I cannot find anything wrong with your body, so I can give you a clean bill of health. The doctor stated.

Just then a woman of in her twenties entered the ward. She was a real beautiful woman, not one of the beautiful women who rely on makeup to look good, but a real good looking woman. She had pitch black hair which hung to her shoulders. She wore a loose fitting black dress which clung to the shape of her body.

Good morning Mister Michaelson, I am Doctor Ruth Fletcher. I am here to try and help you cope with the time you have been in a coma. She said.

Turning to the doctor and the nurse she asked.

I presume that my patient can be moved out of I.C.U. and into a private ward?

Yes Doctor Ruth, I will make the arrangements immediately. The nurse replied.

Mike looked at all that was going on around him and wondered. Did I dream all of the things that have happened to me while I was in a coma, or what?

Mike was taken to a private ward.

The news that Mike was awake was spread around the world, and good wishes came flooding in from people wishing Mike well.

Mike sat on the bed and was brought a very light breakfast.

Mister Michaelson, you have been fed intravenously since you arrived at this hospital, so please take it very slow. The nurse said to him as she put the tray in front of him.

Mike tried to eat, but he was too weak to lift the fork.

The staff changed shift and the morning shift came on duty. They were all brought to Mike’s ward first to inform them about what had happened and what was expected from them for the rest of that day.

After the shift change, an elderly gentleman came to stand next to Mike and introduced himself.

Good morning Mister Michaelson, I am Professor Bates. I was the first doctor that attended to you when you came to us. The Professor said and carried on. When you arrived here, we thought that you would die, I am being honest with you, and we did not think that you would make the night. The Professor said and carried on, But you fought, and today here you are alive. The Professor remarked.

Over the months that you were here, we had to make a lot of operations to fix broken bones and so on. He said and carried on, But one of the most daring operations we had to perform on you was to your face. The Professor said

Mike looked at him, My face, what happened to it? Mike asked, And please, my name is Mike, this Mister business makes me sound like an old man. Mike retorted.

The Professor, with a smile on his face, looked at Mike.

It seems that you hit something very hard, like a tree when the avalanche hit you, it virtually tore your face off, so we had to reconstruct you a new one. The Professor told Mike.

Mike looked at the Professor in disbelief, A new face? Mike said

Yes, a new face. The Professor replied.

Mike sat there wondering how he would like the new face.

Can I see it? Mike wanted to know.

The Professor stood by Mike shaking his head slowly, Mike, I want you to think about what it means to have a new face before I let you see what you look like, but I can guarantee you, all the nursing staff at this hospital says you have a beautiful face. The Professor concluded.

Mike looked at him and said, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And Mike laughed at this remark.

Ok Professor, I will take a few days to think about it before I ask for a mirror. Mike promised.

But now I am tired, it feels as if I have been running a very long race. Mike said.

That is good Mike, I want you to relax and take it easy, it is not going to be a short road, and I think you have a long way to go, but we shall see. The Professor concluded.

Mike was not allowed any visitors, except for Judge Pringle. The Professor first wanted to get Mike into the idea of a new face, and then he would allow visitors to see Mike.

Mike started doing exercise from the very next day to get his strength up so that he was able to sit up for a longer time.

Judge Pringle came to see Mike.

Good day Mike, I trust that you are well? He asked.

Mike felt a sense of relief when the Judge greeted him.

Good morning Judge, seeing as you know it is me, then I must presume that you knew about my face? Mike said.

Yes, we had to have DNA tests done to determine that you were you, although your finger prints would have been sufficient. The Judge explained.

Mike, everything to do with your new face has been completed, that includes your driver’s licence and so on. The Judge said and carried on. But not all your documents have been updated and registered yet, that will still take some time. When you are ready to be discharged, please let them give me a call. The Judge asked and saying goodbye left the hospital.

It did not take long for Mike to start eating solid food, and it was not long before he was able to get out of bed and stand for a couple of minutes.

The Professor came to see Mike every day, and with Mike standing for some time, decided that it was time for Mike to see what he looked like.

The Professor came into the ward accompanied by Doctor Ruth. Mike as you know, Doctor Ruth will be filling you in with all the information that you have missed since you have been here.  The Professor told him. She is a time therapist. The Professor completed.

Mike, today we are going to show you what your new face looks like. Are you ready? asked the Professor.

Mike looked at the two of them and laughed.

Will I really ever be ready to see my new face, but yes, let’s go for it? Mike said.

The professor took a rather large hand mirror from behind his back and gave it to Mike.

Mike took the mirror and held it up in front of him. Mike sat there staring at his reflection in the mirror.

He turned the mirror this way and then that way and then back again and so it went on for some time.

Doctor Ruth wanted to say something, but the Professor stopped her.

It took all of ten minutes before Mike broke the silence.

Not bad Doc, at least it looks better than the old one. Mike said, and laughed. Wow, it really is me. Mike exclaimed.

It will take some time for me to get used to it, at least I can walk past people I do not want to talk to and they will not be any the wiser. Mike laughed.

The Professor, being satisfied that Mike had accepted his new face, left the ward.

Doctor Ruth came and sat next to the bed and explained her role in the episode.

Mike as we are to work together, I would prefer it if you called me just Ruth, like you, I am not one for titles. She said to Mike.

Mike, while you were in a coma, the brain machine kept picking up movement of the brain, which would suggest that you must have been dreaming. She told Mike.

Mike looked at her in surprise and replied.

Yes, I must have had a very long dream, because it was like a very long adventure. Mike told her.

I see, well it is a good thing, because most people lay there and there is no movement in the brain patterns and so we do not know if they are brain dead or not. She said, and carried on, But with you, it was very different, from the time you entered the hospital, your brain patterns were going up and down on the chart. She concluded.

I see so let me get this straight, every time I would jump for instance, the machine would also jump? Mike wanted to know.

Yes Mike. That is what happens when your mind is active. She said.

Mike sat there thinking for a few minutes, I must have had one long dream, I can remember from just before the avalanche hit me, I must have started imagining immediately, Mike said and asked, "If I can remember the details of the dream from the beginning, will you be able to follow it on the brain
