    I bind myself to thee until the earth dissolves in flames.

    The priest strikes a gong as I finish the statement, and Hakim takes my hand. His trembles, but mine is steady.

    I smile at him, then wink for good measure since my veil covers the bottom half of my face and he can’t see my grin. A blush spreads across his cheeks, and I fight back a giggle. I should have known he would be a shy groom. Hakim is loyal and kind but unsure of himself at times.

    I suppose it might be intimidating to marry the only daughter of a sultan and find yourself elevated to royalty. It took some convincing for my parents to let me wed the son of a vizier. I had to sort through countless princes and social climbers first to convince them that there were no better options.

    One impudent man had his mother bring a plate of jewels as a gift. More like a bribe. As if I could be bought so easily.

    Father nearly fell for that. He loves riches, and the jewels were stunning. He actually agreed to the oaf’s request and promised him my hand in marriage!

    But the grand vizier told Father it was best to wait, and the oaf agreed to come back in three months. It only took a few weeks to convince Father that Hakim was a preferable choice. Besides, he already had the jewels. By the time the oaf realizes what has happened, I will already be married. I get my love, and Father gets his jewels.

    We both win at the oaf’s expense. He deserves it for trying to buy me in such a vulgar manner.

    I convinced Father of Hakim’s worth by emphasizing how steady he is. I spoke for hours about how he would make an excellent consort. How his modest upbringing would
