About this ebook

Problems are like washing machines. They twist, they spin and knock us around. But in the end, we come out cleaner, brighter, and better than before. Author Unknown

Cypress, it seems, has been carrying the weight of the world around on his shoulders. With his mother locked up for a murder that he committed, he continues to try to fulfill her wishes of him moving on with his life. But no matter how hard he tries, he just can’t let her spend the rest of her life locked up just so he can walk free.

Cypress’s father, Mingo, has just reinserted himself into the equation and wants to do whatever he needs to do to keep both Cypress and Cynthia out of jail. The one thing he hadn’t counted on was crazy Harper Madison and her obsession with Cypress. Harper’s goal is to derail Cypress and his desire for both Kameron and Nicole. She wants Cypress, and she is prepared to do whatever she needs to do to make that happen.

Didn’t Mean to Love Him Part 2 brings you the culmination of what happens when you mix a whole lot of deception with a little bit of crazy.

I didn’t know why people chose to play me stupid. I saw the exact moment Kameron spotted the dude that she was now over there in an intense conversation with. She and Asia thought they were being discreet when they were whispering. I didn’t hear what had been said, but it was easy to figure out when Kameron just walked away without letting me know where she was going. And then Asia suddenly wanted to dance in front of me like she was a smoke screen. So when Harper walked up and started dancing all up on me, I let her. All the while, I kept an eye on Kameron and old boy. I could have easily stepped away from Harper when I saw Kameron look my way. But instead, I wanted her to get a taste of her own shit she was spewing. I knew Kameron would pop off when she finally looked my way. I might have been being petty, not knowing who she was talking to, but I felt disrespected.

Whoa, Kameron, Asia spoke. This is my friend Harper that I was telling you about from the law clinic. It’s cool.

That threw me for a loop. Harper knew Asia, and Kameron knew that Harper was coming here tonight to hang with us but hadn’t said a word to me. I was sure that Kameron had at least seen Harper before, and I knew for a fact she knew I was handling some business in the law clinic. I didn’t know if any of this had anything to do with anything, but it was all sounding a little too coincidental to me.

I don’t give a fuck who she is. She need to take and keep her damn hands off my man, Kameron snapped.

    Your man? Harper questioned.

I looked back and forth between the two. I was ready to bounce. I didn’t do fools—never had. Drama was not how I wanted my career in music to start. All these people were up in this place, partying and having a good time, listening to my music; the last thing I wanted was to be labeled a thug or savage.

Bitch, I didn’t stutter, Kameron let her quick tongue snap back with ease.

Kameron, you got some nerve, I intervened. You basically diss me and go start talking to this nigga that’s still standing all up on your heels like he’s your damn bodyguard and shit, and then you want to come back over here and check somebody.

Kameron looked over her shoulder at dude, who was now scowling at me, as if she’d forgotten that he was there.

Nigga, you got a problem with her talking to me? old boy asked as he stepped in front of Kameron.

    Legacy, Kameron called his name.

I knew I had a choice to make. I could engage this fool and put him on his ass real quick, or I could walk away and avoid this unnecessary drama.

I hadn’t pegged Harper to be such a loud mouth. She was acting nothing like the girl I met at the courthouse or talked to at the law clinic. Before I had a chance to decide, she stepped between the dude Kameron called Legacy and me.

Cypress don’t have time for this bullshit, Harper spat. You can take your little bitch and move around.

Before I realized what was happening, the asshole Legacy reached back and punched Harper in the face like she was a damn man. It seemed like every single person in the club gasped at the exact same time. Blood splattered everywhere as Harper hit the floor and wailed like a baby. It had been decided for me; I was about to be labeled a savage. After all that I’d been through with my mom, there was no way that I would ever let another woman be physically abused by a man while I stood around and watched.

Pure instinct caused my fist to slam into his left eye with so much force that he stumbled backward into the crowd. I went after him, full force. I could hear Kameron yelling at us to stop, but there was no way either of us were going to back down from this fight. I was so focused on fucking this dude up that I didn’t see Harper get up off the floor and go after Kameron, but I heard Asia calling both their names and screaming for them to stop. It was total chaos in the club. I was sure that some fool was probably streaming all of this on Facebook live. It was the way shit went down nowadays. I was being introduced to millions of people in the worst way possible.

Sirens could be heard approaching the club. It wasn’t a surprise to me that the police had been called. I was shocked club security hadn’t already made it to the dancefloor. I took a quick glance around, seeing several other fights had broken out. I heard a familiar voice call my name. It sounded like Nicole, but I knew this wasn’t the type of spot that she would be hanging out in. She was a homebody like me. That small distraction proved a bad move for me. Legacy used his elbow and connected it with my head. The initial sting of the blow had me bobbing a bit. He was able to put me in chokehold and had me gasping for air. I felt as though I was about to lose consciousness. All of a sudden, he released me, and I fell to the ground. I wanted to lie there and regroup. Knowing that could be a downfall for me, I pushed through and climbed back up on my feet. When I turned around, I looked into my father’s face. He looked like a mad man. He lifted Legacy up and slammed him to the floor.

By this time, Prodigy had made his way over to the chaos. What the fuck? he yelled. It was all that he could get out before a slew of police rushed in and started yelling for everyone to hit the floor. Most everyone in the club complied with the exception of Kameron and Harper. They were still rolling around on the floor with a fistful of each other’s hair, trying to pull out every strand they could. Several police officers came over to try to separate them. When they were finally separated, they continued to yell back and forth at each other.

    You fucking slut! Kameron yelled.

Cypress likes fucking this slut! I heard Harper yell back.

I felt like every eye in the club was staring at me at that moment. I looked at Kameron. I looked at Nicole. I allowed my head to hang down and rest against the floor.

    One

    Cypress

Icould hear the officers asking questions and continuing to bark out orders. I kept my head down as I silently cursed at myself for allowing someone else to put me in a situation that I didn’t want to be in. I wondered what my father was doing here. As I pondered what was about to happen, I couldn’t get Nicole off of my mind. As the police swarmed through the place, my head popped up. I searched the faces of people lying around on the floor. It didn’t take me long to spot her again. She was a few feet away from Mingo. Nadia was lying next to her. The disappointed look on Nicole’s face stabbed me in the heart.

I’m sorry, I mouthed. She smiled. That small gesture calmed me. Footsteps walking toward me caused me to break my gaze with Nicole. I looked up as a pair of black kicks stopped in front of my face.

    Get up.

I assumed witnesses had identified me as one of the perpetrators. Several other officers made their way over to Legacy and Mingo. We were all back on our feet and being handcuffed. Harper’s loud ass mouth could still be heard as they were taking her and Kameron out. She had to be drunk, I figured. She was going off about the way the officers had manhandled her. I knew she had to be living in fairytale land. She’d just fought with Kameron, didn’t comply when the officers told her to stand down, and still expected them to treat her like a lady. In the hood, we learned early that we didn’t have those type of privileges. Otherwise, we’d end up smack dab in the middle of a police brutality case.

It looked like the five of us were going to be taking a trip downtown. The perfect ending to a fucked-up day, I thought. By the time we made it outside, they’d already put Kameron and Harper into two separate squad cars. I had a direct view of Kameron. I couldn’t read the look on her face. I was still pissed that she’d left me looking stupid when she’d walked over to old boy. Now she was looking at me like I was the one that set all this shit in motion. She finally rolled her eyes and looked away from me. It was cool with me. I didn’t do that cheating and sneaking around shit. Some people would probably call bullshit on me since I’d screwed Harper and kissed Nicole. But I would never blatantly disrespect any lady that I had something going with. For Kameron to walk away from me after coming to the party with me was some wack juvenile shit. If she would have told me she wanted to be with dude, I would have walked her over to him and literally hand delivered her ass to him. There was no need for creeping.

The police put each of us in a different squad car. I was glad they did. Mingo might have stood up for me tonight, but he still didn’t have shit coming from me, and he never would. It was a short ride to the police station. It didn’t give me time to do much thinking. I was sure I would be locked up for a while, at least until I went to court. I didn’t have money to make bail. Mom was locked up, and Nicole didn’t have two pennies to rub together. Mingo probably would be sitting in jail as long as I would be. With him just getting out of prison, I was sure he didn’t have enough money to make bail either.

I didn’t know what these jailers were thinking. They booked us in pretty quickly and then put all three of us in the same holding tank. It was clear they didn’t give a shit if we went round for round.

Y’all want to fight so much; now you got nothing but space and opportunity. The jailer laughed after he locked the door.

I guess Legacy realized the deck was stacked against him, being behind a locked door with both me and Mingo. He walked over to a corner and sat down. It didn’t make me a bit of difference. As far as I was concerned, I was done. If he didn’t come after me, I wouldn’t come after him. He could have Kameron’s scheming ass as far as I was concerned.

I walked to other side of the tank and sat down. I didn’t want to be by either of their asses either. Mingo sat about midways between the two of us. Nothing but silence permeated the air. Mingo finally spoke.

What the fuck y’all beefing about? he asked. Neither of us spoke. I ain’t gon’ repeat myself again, Mingo raised his voice. He had that type of voice that commanded respect. I could tell he wasn’t bullshitting with his semi-threat. I allowed myself to imagine what life would have been like growing up with him living in the house with me. I guess Legacy heard what I heard in Mingo’s voice because he spoke up.

This nigga was disrespecting my girl.

Watch your mouth, Mingo told him. This nigga is my son.

As much as I didn’t want to feel anything for this man who called me his son, I couldn’t help it. To be claimed by him gave me a sense of pride. But I wasn’t ready for him to know it yet.

Cy, I know your momma didn’t raise you to disrespect women. So what’s your side of the story?

I couldn’t believe that he was sitting here trying to act like a mediator. I was trying to think back to what happened. I knew I needed to say something. I sighed before I spoke.

I don’t know shit about Kameron being his girl. But I don’t have time for fuckery. He can have Kameron’s ass, but I’ll continue to fuck his ass up if he puts his hands on any woman in front of me. Just thinking about how he punched Harper was pissing me off all over again. I wasn’t feeling Harper like I should have been after screwing her the way I did, but to see her attacked the way she was attacked by Legacy brought back all kinds of emotions about Heinz and his punk ass.

I shouldn’t have done that, Legacy uttered. It’s just I’m going crazy trying to get Kameron back. Ever since she broke up with me, I haven’t been in my right mind. That girl is my whole world.

What? I raised my voice. Did he say get her back? What the fuck you mean, get her back? I thought you just said she was your girl.

    He didn’t say anything.

Don’t get quiet now, Mingo prodded.

She was my girl, Legacy said. She broke up with me last year. I fucked up, and I know it. But I love Kameron more than life itself. I’d do whatever to get her to give me another chance. But to see her with anybody else just kills me and makes me do shit that I wouldn’t normally do.

Man, I growled. I was pissed. Now it all made sense. That’s why Kameron was looking at me like she was. I’d assumed that she was playing me, but she wasn’t. This shit was like a chain reaction. I let things get out of hand because I assumed she was trying to get over. In actuality, she was trying to get this clown to leave her alone.

    Dammit! I yelled.
