Dutch Oven Recipes - Darren Kirby
Introduction
Using a dutch oven harkens back to a simpler time when cooking over a fire was the norm. Even inside in the fireplace, the dutch oven was a prime piece of cookware that was used practically daily. Today, using a dutch oven over a fire, there is something magical, mystical, an indescribable power that the dutch oven has on food.
This hearty piece of cookware should be something that you add to your camping gear, or at least have to use in your backyard. You will wow your friends and neighbors with the delicious recipes that you’ll pull off, often without much effort. Dutch ovens allow you to let the fire do the majority of the work, leaving you with time for activities or just sitting around the fire. And the smells that come from the cooking – heavenly!
This recipe book is a great collection of breakfasts, lunches, dinners and desserts that you will refer back to time and time again. And while these recipes provide you with a great start, you are only limited by your imagination. Experiment and discover new combinations that your family will enjoy for years to come.
This recipe book is unique in its approach for a variety of reasons. First, you will notice that there are no bright, vibrant pictures of the food presented beautifully on colored plates in perfectly setup dining rooms and kitchens. There are a few reasons for this, including cost; getting those pictures shot is a costly endeavor. Also, it would nearly double the size of this book, meaning it would cost you more to purchase this book, and I want this to be an affordable option for everyone; camping itself is inherently cost-effective related to other vacation types, and this book needed to reflect this economy.
Another item that makes this recipe book unique is that we are solely focused on just the use of the dutch oven over an outdoor fire. Yes, there are dutch ovens to use in your oven at home, but that removes the specialness that comes with cooking over a fire. Also, the dutch ovens that are used over a fire have a unique lid that allows you to put coals on top so that you can cook from both the top and bottom of the dutch oven. I have strived to include more recipes for the dutch oven than any other recipe book out there.
Last, not only do we cover the important stuff (food!), but we also cover a variety of related areas to consider with dutch ovens, such as best practices when using your dutch oven, and a rough guide for determining a fire’s equivalent oven temperature.
So, let’s dig out that dutch oven and dig into some tasty food!
Notes About The Recipes
You will notice that in all of these recipes, we use the generic names for the food items. That’s because everyone has different tastes, and just because I like brand X, you might think it tastes nasty and you prefer brand Y. Well, use brand Y then! Experiment, try new things, make new combinations, and just have fun.
Also, please note that these recipes were designed for a hanging dutch oven, that is, hung from a tripod or other device so that the dutch oven is elevated over the fire or coals. You can certainly place the dutch oven directly on the fire/coals, just be aware that your food may cook more quickly and it may require more stirring to prevent any burning on the bottom of the dutch oven.
For those who are vegetarians or just want to use less meat, substitutions are encouraged. Just like you would do for recipes you would make at home, use your favorite substitutions for the chicken, pepperoni, hamburger, and other meats that you find listed in these recipes. While fewer in number, I have included some meatless recipes as well.
Dutch ovens also come in a variety of sizes, from small dessert size dutch ovens, to large 16-inch or larger kinds that will feed a small army. For these recipes, a 10- or 12-inch size dutch oven will be perfect. If you have a smaller dutch oven but still want to use these recipes, look at cutting the ingredients in half. Likewise, if you want to feed a larger group and prefer to use a single dutch oven instead of multiple ones, look at doubling the ingredients and use
